hero

Jet Link aka Cyborg 002 is a major protagonist in the Cyborg 009 franchise created by Shotaro Ishinomori. He is the second model in the Black Ghost organization's 00 Cyborg line of cyborg super-soldiers, possessing an Accelerator device that lets him fly at extremely fast speeds, though his accelerator is not as advanced as Joe Shimamura's. In contrast to his youthful appearance, Jet is actually more than 50 years old.

With a fiery but well-meaning personality, 002 acts as a counterbalance to the calm but sensitive 009 and more aloof 004.

History

An Italian-American born in the West Side of New York City, Jet Link had a rough upbringing that soon led to him turning to delinquency and joining a gang in his teenage years. Though only concerned with his own survival, Jet began develop guilt over watching many other local children follow the same path he did.

During a skirmish with a rival gang, the conflict unexpectedly turned lethal when Jet accidentally murdered a member of the gang. As the police arrived, Jet was forced to flee the scene to avoid getting caught and wound up being taken by Black Ghost.

Receiving cybernetic implants, including an Accelerator which allowed him to move at high speeds, Jet was converted into the second model in Black Ghost's 00 cyborg line, Cyborg 002. Jet later escaped Black Ghost along with the other 00 models with help from an ex-Black Ghost scientist named Dr. Gilmore.

From there, Jet and the 00 Cyborgs began a campaign to rid of the world of Black Ghost's evil. Jet seemingly died at the end of the "Underground Empire of Yomi" arc of the manga (which was intended to be the final arc), where he flies up into the Earth's orbit to rescue 009 from the collapsing Demon Statue, only to discover he doesn't have enough fuel to bring them both back and choosing the give 009 company as the two plummet to there deaths. However, this was changed after Shotaro Ishinomori decided to continue the manga. 002 and 009 were revealed to have been saved at the last minute by the psychic powers of Cyborg 001, who teleported them back to Earth before they could burn up in its atmosphere.
