hero

Cyrus Albright is one of eight heroes in Octopath Traveler. He is a professor at the Royal Academy of Atlasdam, the academic capital of the Flatlands. Brimming with passion for knowledge and teaching, Cyrus enjoys a substantial reputation as an academic.

Abilities

Cyrus Albright is a powerful mage with a focus on elemental magic and strategic combat. His abilities center around exploiting enemy weaknesses and providing tactical information. He excels at multi-target elemental attacks and automatically reveals enemy weaknesses at the start of battle.

Appearance

Cyrus has long black hair tied into a ponytail. His hair is combed back, with two locks of his hair framing both sides of his face. He wears a white button-up shirt with puffed sleeves tied at the wrist, along with a cravat. He also wears a black hooded coat with a caplet, accented with gold filigree and held together by a black gemstone; a brown vest with filigree embroidery over his white shirt; black breeches with black socks; and black leather shoes with golden buckles. In his sprites, the inside of his coat is a dark purple. Primrose states that Cyrus has "a face that girls are likely to fancy."

Personality

As a scholar, Cyrus prizes knowledge above all else. He believes that knowledge must be shared with other people, contrasting the principles of Headmaster Yvon, who believes that knowledge is an extension of one's personal power and should be hoarded for individual gain. Although Cyrus blatantly opposes the headmaster's beliefs, he keeps quiet because criticizing Yvon could cost him his job as a scholar; only when he confronts Lucia does Cyrus deliver a grand lecture on his ideals. He is always eloquent and cordial towards others, eager to share his knowledge whenever possible, even attempting to teach his opponents.

Thanks in large part to his overflowing knowledge, Cyrus possesses excellent deduction skills. According to the librarian Mercedes, he is known as the most brilliant mind in the Royal Academy. He is also rather pragmatic, taking advantage of the sabbatical to search for the missing tome, From the Far Reaches of Hell. Despite his intelligence, however, he tends to be oblivious to the feelings of women who fall for him. He even mistakes the actions of envy committed by his enamored student, Therese, as feelings of isolation and lack of attentiveness from her tutor. Cyrus even goes so far as to say it is his fault for not providing enough time for Therese in terms of her studying, proving that he cares for the well being - but not for the romantic interests - of his students. Ironically, Cyrus is anything but oblivious to the feelings of women for other men, which unnerves Primrose when she meets Simeon for the first time in ten years; Cyrus is quick to notice and comment on way she looks at him.

Cyrus often provides academic knowledge when talking with his fellow travelers, though his lectures produce mixed results. While Ophilia and Alfyn rejoice in his vast wisdom, others, such as Therion and Tressa, find his lectures long-winded. Nevertheless, Cyrus always shows concern for his companions' problems, and gives advice whenever possible to ease their minds. His analytical mind and thirst for knowledge seeks out the other travelers' own wisdom as well.

History

When some tomes from the Atlasdam library go missing, Cyrus investigates and pins the crime on fellow scholar Russell, who has been selling rare books to cover gambling debts. However, one tome in particular, From The Far Reaches Of Hell, has been missing for 15 years. Meanwhile, a rumor circulates within the academy that one of Cyrus's students, Princess Mary, falls in love with a teacher — a rumor which Cyrus accidentally reinforces. Headmaster Yvon, with his assistant Lucia, forces Cyrus to take a sabbatical, and Cyrus uses this opportunity to search for the missing tome.

Cyrus' search for the tome leads him to Quarrycrest in the Cliftlands, and to his former associate Odette. Cyrus learns that people have gone missing in broad daylight, and decides to investigate. Cyrus discovers that a mysterious man named Gideon has been kidnapping people to use their blood to make blood crystals, used for an ancient ritual. Cyrus stops his schemes and saves the remaining victims. He finds that Gideon has a partial, translated copy of From The Far Reaches Of Hell, whence he got the instructions for making blood crystals. He and Odette manage to determine where the copy was made, and Cyrus sets out for Stonegard, in the Highlands.

Cyrus heads to the home of the man that had originally translated From The Far Reaches Of Hell, and learns that the work was commissioned by none other than Headmaster Yvon. Lucia seeks out Cyrus and leads him to Yvon's home, but there Cyrus is trapped. Therese, Cyrus' student that had started the "Hot For Teacher" rumor, comes to his rescue, but is subsequently captured. Cyrus goes to rescue her, fighting Yvon after he uses a blood crystal to enhance himself. Therese tells Cyrus where Yvon had intended to go next.

Cyrus arrives at Duskbarrow in the Woodlands, where he discovers an entire secret library contained within ancient ruins. At last, he finds From The Far Reaches Of Hell, in the possession of the library's owner: Lucia, the true mastermind behind the plot. Lucia's main motivation has been to use the blood crystal research to attain Immortality and forever gain knowledge, which Cyrus disagrees with, believing that knowledge should be shared with future generations instead of hoarded. After a battle, Cyrus takes the tome, realizing that the information in it pertains to opening a certain gate which seals away a great evil. He returns to Atlasdam, believing that humanity can learn from the mistakes of the past and better itself with proper education, and dedicates himself to researching the topic further so that humanity might be ready should someone use the knowledge for ill.
