That's nothing. When I'm in charge, the first thing I'll do is get revenge on those puny ponies. They'll regret they ever crossed Garble! We'll take whatever we want from Equestria, and burn the rest!
~ Garble explaining what he plans to do if he becomes Dragon Lord, also planning revenge on Spike and his pony friends for defeating him.

Garble the Dragon, more commonly known as Garble, is a supporting antagonist in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

He is a red dragon who lives in the Dragon Lands. He is introduced as the leader of a gang of teenage dragons. He is shown to his tough guy persona, arrogance, and deep-seated prejudice against ponies. He frequently mocks Spike for being small and for his un-dragon-like behavior, such as his friendship with ponies. In the ninth season, it is revealed that Garble is the older brother of Smolder.

It was later revealed that he has a secret passion for beat poetry. Fearful of being mocked by other dragons, he uses his bullying as a shield. With the encouragement of Smolder and Fluttershy, he uses his poetry to help hatch a batch of dragon eggs, finally embracing his sensitive side and becoming a hero in the Dragon Lands. By the end of the series, he has fully reformed. He joins the combined forces of ponies, dragons, and other creatures to fight against the Legion of Doom in the final battle for Equestria.

He is voiced by Vincent Tong, who also voiced Flash Sentry, his human counterpart and Sandbar from the same G4 franchise, Kai from Ninjago, Eugene Wong from Dragons: The Nine Realms, Jestro from Nexo Knights, Huckleberry Pie from Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, various versions of Knuckles the Echidna from Sonic Prime, Avan from Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, and Zuko from Avatar The Last Airbender: Quest for Balance.

Appearance

Garble is a teenage dragon with a physical design reflects a classic, sharp-edged dragon. He has dull/moderate red scales and a pale, light grayish-gold (or yellow) underbelly. He is significantly taller than Spike, standing at a height typical for a teenage dragon. He has pale grayish-olive or yellow eyes with dark purple pupils. He is also often seen with pinkish freckles on his snout.

He has vivid gamboge (yellow-orange) spikes running down his back. On his head, these spikes form a webbed crest similar to the helmets worn by Princess Luna’s royal guards. His wings are light amber or yellow and appear slightly torn or tattered at the edges. Unlike baby dragons, Garble has a lanky, more upright build and visible nostrils.

History

Season Two

In Dragon Quest, Garble is first seen fighting another dragon. As Spike confronts the gang, they start mocking him for being such a young dragon. Garble challenges Spike to a belching contest to prove he is not pathetic, but he ends up coughing a letter from Princess Celestia, and Garble throws it in the lava.

Garble then challenges Spike to tail wrestling. He wrestles "Crackle's cousin," who is really Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity in disguise. Garble declares Spike the winner after their "wrestle," and he begins to take back his mocks at Spike and calls him a "real dragon." When Spike starts acting cocky, Garble chooses another dragon for Spike, one of which has an enormous and dangerous tail. Spike gets thrown to the wall and loses.

Afterwards, he challenges Spike to a game of "King of the Hoard," where he must knock Garble and other dragons off a pile of gems to be on the top. Other dragons fight their way up to the top too, but Garble throws each off to keep his place. Spike accidentally pushes Garble over, and he falls off the pile. Spike, after declaring himself the winner, falls off the pile and Garble calls it another fail.

Garble challenges Spike and the other dragons to one last game: Lava Cannonball. He announces that whoever makes the biggest splash is the ultimate dragon. He dives first, followed by more dragons. Garble torments Spike for being too afraid to jump off, but he ultimately does. Spike makes a belly flop onto the lava and impresses Garble and the other dragons for living through the belly flop, calling him a "tough little dragon."

For his effort, Garble dubs Spike "rookie dragon," and he accepts him as one of their own. He gives Spike a noogie as an initiation ritual, and has a party to celebrate Spike's addition to their horde. Garble says Spike should stay, and learn what he can do as a dragon that he couldn't do in Ponyville.

Garble offers Spike to go on a dragon raid, where they will steal from a nest of phoenix eggs. Garble instructs Spike that he, as a rookie dragon, must lure the parents away from the nest. After Spike lures them away, Garble looks inside the nest to find the eggs have already hatched.

Garble tries to take the hatchlings, but fails as they manage to get away. He and two other dragons from his gang chase the hatchlings, and he unintentionally causes an egg to fall from the nest. The phoenix parents find out about Garble's raid, and they get their hatchlings back. As the phoenixes are flying away, Garble tries to stop them, but the male phoenix counter-attacks and knocks him and his friends into a tree. They fly back to the nest to find Spike holding the egg Garble knocked down earlier. He is impressed by this, and tells Spike to smash it.

However, Spike refuses, and Garble is angry that he said "no" to him. Garble and the two other dragons close in on Spike, but Twilight, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity come and threaten the dragons if they try to hurt Spike. Garble and his friends laugh at this, completely unafraid at the ponies' threat. He asks Spike if these are really his friends, and he proudly answers yes, and even insults him and tells him to back off. Garble is annoyed as Spike runs away from him, so he and his friends chase the ponies, but they get away and Garble and his friends crash into another tree.

Season Six

In Gauntlet of Fire, Garble appears again as the antagonist, still harboring a low opinion of both Spike and ponies in general. He is summoned to the Dragon Lands by the call of the Dragon Lord to take part in the Gauntlet of Fire, the winner of which will be crowned the new Dragon Lord. Garble wishes to be the Dragon Lord so he can get revenge on the ponies who crossed him, intending to lead the dragons in looting and burning down Equestria.

Throughout the Gauntlet, Garble mocks Spike for his small stature and pony-like characteristics. However, he under-performs at multiple times during the race. In the final dash for the bloodstone scepter that decides the winner, Garble faces both Spike and his partner Ember. As a result of their teamwork, Garble loses. As punishment for his actions, Spike—the winner and temporary new Dragon Lord—commands him to go home and hug every dragon he passes along the way without disclosure, much to Garble's humiliation.

Season Seven

In Celestial Advice, Garble appears in a simulation produced by Twilight. He meets Starlight Glimmer and has a hard time trying to pronounce her name. He then holds onto her and dives into the lava with her.

In Shadow Play - Part 1, Garble appears using Flash Magnus' shield as a gorge-surfing board. Unwilling to give up the shield, he challenges Spike to a gorge-surfing race for it. Spike beats Garble over the finish line, but rather than relinquish the shield, he attempts to attack Spike instead. Rainbow Dash intervenes and tricks Garble into relinquishing the shield by challenging him to another race and convincing him to put the shield down to fly faster. As Garble flies the race, Rainbow and Spike fly away with the shield.

Season Nine

In Sweet and Smoky, Garble appears again, revealed to be Smolder's older brother. When Spike, Smolder, and Fluttershy travel to the Dragon Lands for dragon hatching season, Garble picks on Spike as he always does, but his friends mention that he has been mopey lately, and he rejects Spike's efforts to befriend him.

It is later revealed that Garble is secretly a beat poet who hides his passion for poetry from his friends for fear of being mocked, and picks on Spike so his friends won't pick on him (which both Fluttershy and his sister scold him for). With Smolder and Fluttershy's encouragement (and some unintentional inspiration from Spike), Garble uses his poetry to help in hatching the dragon eggs.

Personality

Garble is introduced as a loud, aggressive, brutish, and confident dragon. His outward aggression and constant belittling of others, particularly Spike, stem from a deep-seated insecurity about his own intelligence and place within dragon society. His brutish nature is a learned defense mechanism to avoid being perceived as weak or foolish. His secret passion for beat poetry isn't just a hidden talent; it's a desperate yearning for connection and self-expression that he's too proud and fearful to admit.

Garble's desire to burn Equestria to the ground and disregard for phoenix eggs isn't purely evil, but instead it's a misguided desire for absolute control and power. He sees the destruction of things associated with ponies as a way to assert dragon authority and eradicate what he perceives as a threat to his own species' identity. His dimwittedness isn't necessarily a lack of intelligence, but rather a stubborn refusal to engage with ideas or concepts that challenge his established worldview.

Despite his constant insults, Garble has a subtle, unacknowledged respect for Spike's resourcefulness and loyalty to his friends. Garble's attempts to outsmart Spike are a twisted form of competitive engagement, where he secretly hopes to prove himself superior to someone he views as a worthy, albeit detestable, opponent. His positive relationship with Smolder is an emotional anchor in his otherwise tumultuous inner world. She represents a safe space where he doesn't have to maintain his aggressive persona, allowing him to be genuinely caring and protective, even if he'd never admit it.

Initially, Garble's threats and bluster are often performative, designed to intimidate and maintain his position within the dragon hierarchy. He believes that constant displays of aggression are necessary to avoid being perceived as weak or exploited by other dragons. The fact that he eventually embraces his poetry when it helps the dragon eggs hatch suggests a flicker of underlying empathy for his own kind, even if it's rarely extended to others. This shared purpose allows him to momentarily drop his guard and connect with a softer side of himself. His picking on Spike to avoid being picked on himself reveals a cyclical pattern of abuse and self-preservation.

Despite this, Garble's beat poetry is not just a hobby, but it's a potential avenue for emotional growth and self-discovery. By expressing himself through art, he can process his complex feelings and eventually find healthier ways to interact with the world. While he resents ponies, the exposure to their culture (through Spike and Smolder's interactions) might be subtly shaping his worldview, even if he consciously fights against it. His slow, grudging exposure could be a long-term factor in softening his prejudices.

Powers, Abilities and Weaknesses

As a dragon, Garble possesses several innate physical and magical traits. Like most dragons, he can exhale large bursts of fire. In the episode "Sweet and Smoky," it is revealed that his fire becomes significantly hotter and more powerful when he is embarrassed or emotional. He has a pair of functional wings that allow him to fly at high speeds, though he is sometimes outmaneuvered by agile flyers like Rainbow Dash.

Garble is physically much stronger than an average pony. He is capable of tail-wrestling, lifting heavy objects, and engaging in physical combat with other dragons. He can swim and relax in molten lava without injury. He is shown to be skilled at gorge-surfing on lava, using various objects (like Flash Magnus’s shield) as boards. A hidden talent revealed late in the series; Garble is a skilled poet. Interestingly, his bad poetry (which causes other dragons to cringe) actually provides the heat necessary to hatch dragon eggs.

Despite his bravado, Garble has several notable vulnerabilities. Garble’s tough exterior is largely a front. He is deeply insecure about his un-dragon-like hobbies (like poetry) and fears being mocked by his peers. This insecurity often drives his bullying behavior. He frequently underestimates his opponents, particularly Spike and the ponies, which has led to his defeat in competitions like the "Gauntlet of Fire."

He is hot-headed and prone to making rash decisions, especially when his ego is bruised or when he is trying to maintain his reputation as a tough dragon. While physically formidable, he has little defense against advanced pony magic, as seen when he is outmatched by Twilight Sparkle’s spells or Rainbow Dash’s superior speed and trickery.

Reception

Garble has a polarized reception, often leaning toward the negative due to his role as a persistent bully. His character arc moves from a jerk antagonist to a redeemed character in the final season, a transition that remains a point of debate among fans. Initially, Garble was widely disliked by the fanbase because of his treatment of Spike. Many fans viewed him as a one-dimensional teenage hooligan stereotype. Critics noted that while he was effective as a foil to Spike, showing what a dragon might become without a positive upbringing—he lacked depth for most of the series.

Some viewers found him particularly heinous compared to other minor villains because his actions felt more personal and grounded. For example, his willingness to smash phoenix eggs in "Dragon Quest" and his desire to lead a dragon army to burn Equestria in "Gauntlet of Fire" led some to rank him among the show's more evil characters. The discovery that he is the older brother of Smolder was a bombshell for many. Some fans appreciated the twist, feeling it humanized him by showing he only bullied others to avoid being teased for his own un-dragon-like passion for beat poetry.

A significant portion of the fandom felt the redemption was rushed or unearned. Critics argued that his past actions—such as nearly killing Spike or Starlight Glimmer—were too severe to be excused by the "he was just insecure" defense. Some fans also felt it was "forced" to make him Smolder's brother simply to give him a reason to change. Conversely, some viewers enjoyed the message that bullies have problems of their own. These fans found his weaponized cringe (using poetry to save dragon eggs) to be a unique and heartwarming resolution to his character arc.
