"Hello" Kitty White, is the titular main protagonist of Sanrio's Hello Kitty franchise.
She was first designed by Yuko Shimizu and is portrayed as a white female Japanese Bobtail with a red bow on her left ear, and has no mouth. The character's first appearance on an item, a vinyl coin purse, was introduced in Japan in 1974 and brought to the United States in 1976.
She is voiced by Tara Strong in Furry Tale Theater, Karen Bernstein in Daisuki! History
The character is a staple of the kawaii segment of Japanese pop culture. The Hello Kitty trademark has spread globally; Sanrio earned over $1 billion annually in sales outside of Japan, as of 2003. Although mainly aimed at the pre-adolescent female market, the Hello Kitty product range goes all the way from purses, stickers and pen sets to toasters, televisions, clothing, massagers, and computer equipment. It has a cult-like following among adults as well, especially in Asia, where Hello Kitty adorns cars, purses, jewelry, and many other high-end consumer products. Several Hello Kitty TV series, targeted towards young children, has also been produced. Examples of products depicting the character include dolls, stickers, greeting cards, clothes, accessories, school supplies, dishes, and home appliances. Her fame as a recurring Sanrio character has led to the creation of two officially licensed Hello Kitty theme parks, Harmonyland, and the indoor Sanrio Puroland.
Personality and background
Kitty was born on November 1st in London, England with her parents and her twin sister, she is portrayed as a cute, bright, sweet, kind-hearted girl, she has a very good relationship with her friends and family, most notably her twin sister Mimmy.
Most of her hobbies are baking cookies and collecting cute things and making new friends. She also seems to have a crush on Dear Daniel as they've known each other since they were babies.
Appearance
Kitty is depicted as a white Japanese Bobtail cat with a red bow and no mouth, her usual clothes that she wears is a yellow shirt with blue overalls over it. Her height is described as five apples and her weight as three apples.
Trivia
- Along with Badtz-Maru and Keroppi, she makes a small cameo appearance in Ready Player One, she can be seen in the OASIS and in the Halliday's Journal.
- Her brand is currently the second highest grossing media franchise of all time, with an estimated revenue of $84.5 billion in USD.
- She is an unlockable Mystery Mushroom costume in Super Mario Maker along with My Melody, and they are unlocked by clearing the Event Course "Hello Kitty and My Melody".
- Along with My Melody, Badtz-Maru and Chococat, she became an unlockable character during a Sanrio themed event for Sonic Dash.
- She became a buyable DLC character for Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, and she was released on the game's launch on October 5, 2021.
- Hello Kitty has appeared in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in three forms:
- The first one in 1995 was in the form of a walk-around character costume. During this appearance, Hello Kitty was joined by fellow Sanrio characters as they waved to the crowd from the formerly-named Fruit Juice Valley float.
- The second one was a balloon introduced in 2006 which has Hello Kitty resemble a "Super Cute" superhero version of herself.
- The latest one in 2012 has Hello Kitty flying in a retro plane.
