| ~ Ib's only spoken words in the game. |
Ib, pronounced as Eve, is the titular main protagonist of the 2012 video game Ib and the 2022 remake of the same name. A young girl who went with her parents on an art gallery, Ib's simple day suddenly takes for the worst, when she comes across a mysterious painting, causing her to be sent into another twisted area of the gallery, known as the Fabricated World.
Now trapped inside, Ib must later find a way out of the twisted gallery, while avoiding paintings that have come back to life and were now bent on killing her.
Appearance
Ib, a nine-year-old girl with brown hair and red eyes, is a beautiful young lady. Her hair is a dull chestnut brown that she wears long and down her back with fringed bangs over her forehead.
For outfit, it consists of a knee-length pleated red skirt that matches her neckerchief and a white long-sleeved top with a red ribbon, similar to Mary's blue scarf. She is also dressed in black knee-high stockings and red shoes with white bottoms and a little red bow on the top of each shoe. Her outfit is reminiscent of a school uniform.
During one of Garry's conversations with Ib in the True Guertena Exhibit, he notices that she seems to be underweight, asks if she's eating correctly, and advises her to consume healthful meals. Garry complements her dress style in the Safe Room.
In the True Guertena Exhibit, Mary mentions that Ib's hair is particularly smooth in one of her conversations with her.
Personality
Ib's personality changes depending on the decisions made by the player. Although she appears to be devoid of feeling, the game's creator has depicted some of Ib's reactions to events. The game's finale is influenced by the player's personality choices (the choices the player makes affect the way Ib talks to and acts towards Garry or Mary).
Ib, on the other hand, is depicted as timid, guarded, and vacantly unreadable. She appears to have an exceptional mental immunity to strange occurrences that would typically cause distress most of the time. It's unclear if she's simply too young and innocent to notice when something is unusual, or whether she has the capacity to remain emotionally unaffected, preventing her from getting overwhelmed.
On the inside, though, she is a really kind, caring, and emotional person. Ib's mental state appears to be disturbed as the cursed gallery's events begin to eerily include persons who are vital to her (particularly, her parents and eventually, Garry, with varied happenings depending on the player's route), as she exhibits anxiety during such moments.
Ib physically demonstrates her devotion for Garry by hugging him twice after a series of incredibly uncomfortable scenes. During the cutscene depicting her nightmare, Ib is visibly terrified of the cursed gallery. She is also quite sympathetic to others, as she demonstrated when she had to leave Mary behind.
Unlike Garry, she rarely expresses or displays her emotions. Ib is really innocent and naive because of her age. She can't read some of the words in the exhibit and doesn't comprehend much of what's going on, though she understands danger. For example, in any of the endings in which Garry dies, Ib will mistakenly believe that he is sleeping when she sees his body.
History
Ib goes to an art gallery with her parents one day to see Guertena's paintings. Ib travels on her own to the museum after her mother grants her permission to gaze at the art on her own. She is eventually taken to the Fabricated World (read as "??? World" depending on Garry's survival). She ultimately finds the Red Rose after some exploration. Her life is tied to the rose, and if it dies, she will as well. She doesn't get it, though, since she can't read the sign next to where she discovered the rose entirely.
As Ib continues to explore the cursed gallery, she will come upon Garry, who has collapsed on the ground and appears to be in anguish while clutching a Small Key tightly in his hand. If she inspects Garry after picking up the key, she has two options: cry out to him or massage his shoulders, both of which will have no effect or will cause him greater agony, respectively. However, once Ib acquires the Blue Rose, which she will discover being torn apart by the Lady in Blue, these alternatives will become inaccessible. Because Garry, like Ib, is linked to a rose, nothing will be able to aid him unless Ib cures his rose.
The way Ib treats Garry is somewhat determined by the player, but it is also influenced by the game. Ib appears to have the same feelings for Garry as he has for her. Also, just as the connection with Garry may be selected, so can the relationship with Mary, although the two of them have no tie. Ib seemed to like Mary, as Garry speculated that Ib would be remorseful about abandoning her after defending her from Mary once he discovered/remembered the truth about her being a painting. Even though Ib realises Mary is a painting, she hasn't considered how harmful Mary can be.
When Ib and Garry sneak into the Sketchbook, Mary throws them into the Toy Box, where they end up. Mary may or may not be able to locate her rose, depending on the interactions between Mary and Ib. Her rose will not be found if there are no petals above Ib when she wakes up. The petals of her rose will lead to the rose if they are visible above Ib.
Trivia
- Ib's rose is red, symbolic for "true love" in the Victorian language of flowers.
- According to Kouri, her family is upper-class, so her skirt goes just down to her knees.
- In one part of the gallery, Ib sees a room of ornaments shaped like cute bunnies, but when the player enters the room playing as Garry, he sees disturbing blue dolls with red eyes. A book in that room is a hint: the book states that when the spirit is tired, people hallucinate to comfort themselves, and the worst part is that the person is unaware of it. This implies Ib is hallucinating in this room; despite appearing to be strong, she is greatly affected by the ordeal and sees the dolls as rabbits, which confuses Garry when she says she thinks the dolls are cute.
- In kouri's Ib gallery is said that Ib loves her mother, but gets along with her father too.
- Ib's rose only has five petals because she is a child, while Garry has ten, being a young adult.
- According to the Japanese wikia, her favorite things are omelets and rabbits (remember the rabbit room?), while her least favorite things are green peppers and exercise.
