Insectosaurus is a major character in the Monsters vs. Aliens franchise. He was once a small grub who was turned into a gigantic insectoid monster by nuclear radiation and attacked Tokyo.
His vocal sound effects were provided by Conrad Vernon, who also voices Gingy from the Shrek franchise and Mason from the Madagascar franchise.
Appearance
Insectosaurus is a gigantic, bulky, muscular, mutated, kaiju-sized grub-like monster with an orange, furry, mammalian-like body, a hamster-like face, four pincer-arms, a massive overbite, and a short, reptilian-like tail. Eventually, he transforms into a giant, winged, butterfly-like creature while retaining his hamster-like face, furry body, overbite and tail.
Personality
Insectosaurus is a gentle, innocent, and childlike creature, contrasting with his terrifying, massive appearance. He even acts as a loyal, affectionate pet to the Missing Link. Despite his destructive potential, he is sweet-natured, kind-hearted, endearing, and harmless. He often acts like a giant, affectionate dog or hamster, especially toward Link. He is fiercely protective of his fellow monsters and helps defend Earth, acting as a hero rather than a destructive monster. While he cannot speak human language, his sounds are understood by Link. He can also get easily distracted and led by bright lights, often used to control his movements.
Biography
Insectosaurus originally was nothing more than a simple grub with no unique characteristics, but after his mutation he donned an almost mammalian-like appearance similar to that of an orange hamster with a massive overbite, four pincer-like arms, antennas, two stubby feet, and a short reptilian-like tail. Insectosaurus is a massive creature in size even dwarfing the giant Ginormica. He is seen in the movie using his powerful pincers to pull the bridge back in place in the Golden Gate fight scene. Not only can he do that, he can also shoot sticky web substances from his nostrils that were used only on the Alien Robots eye to stop it from reacting for a short time so the other Monsters could get him and Ginormica (Susan Murphy) to battle Monster on the Golden Gate Bridge. Despite his big physique, he is actually a baby, but that is not approved other than he cannot talk. When he walks, he does it in a dinosaur way and is very slow to walk. Sometimes he doesn't know what to do so he is mesmerized and navigated by a helicopter carrying a light in front of creature causing him to stare at it and follow where it goes, also it helps keeps him stable and be amazed at the sight. When that happens, the pupils of his eyes grow almost as big as the size of his eye making him look like a big scary looking monster, but in reality, he is harmless. He cannot hear what the other monsters, aliens and humans are saying (Apart from the Missing Link) so that makes him an (almost) useless, powerful, fun, cuddly Monster.
After his metamorphosis near the end of the film, Insectosaurus' appearance is changed to that of a more butterfly-like creature (similar to Mothra of Godzilla fame) while still possessing his hamster-like face, furry body, massive overbite and reptilian-like tail. He’s been renamed to Butterflyosaurus.
Powers and Abilities
- Gigantic Size & Immeasurable Strength: As a 350-foot monster (sometimes cited as 30-story building height), Insectosaurus possesses immense strength due to his gargantuan size. This is demonstrated when he helps stabilize a bridge and confronts the giant robot probe.
- Nuclear Immunity & Immense Durability: Because Insectosaurus was created by radiation, he has nuclear immunity and is highly resistant to damage, capable of withstanding significant force.
- Nasal Silk Shooting: Insectosaurus can shoot a highly sticky, web-like substance from his nostrils, which he uses to incapacitate enemies (such as blinding the robot probe's eye).
- Prehensile Tail: Insectosaurus features a powerful tail which he could use against his enemies in combat.
- Accelerated Healing Factor: As a kaiju, Insectosaurus possesses the ability to recover from injuries.
As Butterflyosaurus
- Flight: After becoming a giant, moth-like butterfly creature, Insectosaurus gains the ability to fly, becoming the team's primary mode of transportation.
- Improved Agility: Despite his sheer size, Insectosaurus becomes more agile and faster.
Weaknesses
- Similar to a moth, Insectosaurus is easily distracted or mesmerized by bright lights, which are often used to guide his movement.
- While intelligent enough to follow commands, Insectosaurus behaves like a wild animal and cannot speak clearly.
