Onee-San (or The Lady) is the secondary protagonist of the novel and its anime adaptation Penguin Highway. She works as a dental assistant in a small town where she meets Aoyama, and teaches the boy chess in her spare time. She is able to create penguins out of objects such as soda cans, which she herself doesn't fully understand why, with Aoyama she learns the truth about her powers and her existence.

She was voiced by Yū Aoi in Japanese and by Erika Harlacher in English.

Personality

Onee-San, in contrast to Aoyama's stoic and reserved nature, is rather upbeat and friendly. She develops a liking for Aoyama and his interest in scientific investigation and forms a very close friendship with. She is usually very nice to people she meets and is worried about the research team when they are trapped in "The Ocean"

Biography

Onee-San is a young woman who works at a dental clinic in a small town, she meets Aoyama and teaches him chess at a local café. One day she finds Aoyama stuck to a vending machine, whom she releases. She then helps pull out his loose tooth and then throws a soda can into the sky which transforms into a penguin. With the help of Aoyama, she conducts experiments to find out how she is able to do this. Afterwards she takes Aoyama to her apartment whom spends the night with her. They don't meet again until the summer festival months later.

One day when exploring the forest, she finds Aoyama and her friends, she send her penguins to scare away Suzuki and his gang of bullies.

While a research team is sent to investigate the Ocean, Onee-San takes Aoyama on the train to the seaside but falls sick in the process. She visits Aoyama when he falls sick.

Eventually the Ocean becomes bigger and creates thunderstorms and Jabberwocky appear. Aoyama escapes school, finds Onee-San and the two, riding on a hoard of penguins, enter the Ocean and rescue the research team. When they return, the two run to the café. Onee-San hugs Aoyama before she leaves and vanished as the Ocean is destroys. Her exact fate is left ambiguous.
