I think of love as the rarest, most beautiful bird . . . wonderful to see and sweet to listen to, but always out of reach.

Ruby is a character in 2009 historical fiction novel Red Lotus (first published in the US as The Concubine's Daughter; ISBN 978-0-7515-3898-4). She exclusively appears in Part Two: Red Lotus.

Biography

Part Two: Red Lotus

Ruby is an Indian woman of partial French ancestry from her mother: her father was a wealthy Parsee merchant who impregnated the French tutor of his children. Ruby's mother was driven from her house, and Ruby was ostracized and had poor living conditions for much of her childhood in her native India due to her race. At some point, she emigrated to Macao and became the head worker at the Tavern of Cascading Jewels, a reputable Macao opium house staffed almost entirely by non-Chinese women and run by the tyrannical pimp Tamiko-san, and was given the pseudonym Ruby. She briefly escaped the tavern at one point, but after bearing her first child whom she ultimately never reunites with, she was caught, beaten and scarred by Tamiko-san to mark her for identification and prevent escape.

Shortly after meeting and befriending Siu-Sing/Topaz, the two successfully permanently escape the tavern. While traveling around Macao and Hong Kong with Sing and Toby Hyde-Wilkins to help Sing find her missing father, Ruby encourages Sing and Toby to become a couple. She then sacrifices herself in a storm to allow Sing to survive.
