In the beginning there was an empty darkness.. The only thing in this void was a black brick, Two-By-Two. Two-By-Two was the Alpha Brick, the First. Copied, pasted, and recolored a million times, Robloxia was built out of nothing from the images of Two-By-Two. These were the early days…
~ The story of how Two-by-Two created the Roblox universe, according to Chronicles of Roblox.[1]

2x2, pronounced as Two-by-Two, and also referred to as the Alpha Brick, is the overarching protagonist of the Roblox Universe.

As the first brick ever created on Roblox and the ancestor of all that came after him, Two-by-Two pioneered the creation of all structures, items, materials, and everything else ever created on the platform, transforming the once-nothing universe into what it is today: Robloxia. Two-by-Two is also known imprisoning Roblox's eternal arch-nemesis 1x1x1x1 at the "dawn of time", bringing peace and order to the platform, that is, for a while.

Appearance

According to his description in the Chronicles of Roblox, Two-by-Two was just a 2x2 stud brick covered entirely in black and, unlike Robloxians, did not have a humanoid form, indicating that he was a sentient object of some kind.

Personality

Two-by-Two has never made a physical appearance anywhere and has no dialogue of his own. However, it is possible to make some inferences about his characteristics based on what has been said about him so far.

Two-by-Two is often imagined as a calm, wise, and purposeful entity; one who values order, creation, and stability above all else. As the origin of all structure in Robloxia, his actions reflect a deep sense of duty and responsibility, driven not by ego but by a quiet commitment to preserving the balance of the world. Reserved and stoic, Two-by-Two never intervenes directly, acting only when the fabric of reality itself is threatened. His decisions are deliberate, often shaped by a long-term vision that spans dimensions, suggesting a being of great insight and patience. While benevolent in intent, he is also unyielding when it comes to protecting the world he helped build, standing as a symbol of unshakable structure in the face of chaos.

Biography

Background

According to The Chronicles of Roblox (VI.203), the universe of Roblox began in an empty void, devoid of shape or light. Within this nothingness existed a single, solitary object: a black 2x2 stud brick known as Two-by-Two. Referred to as the Alpha Brick and the First, Two-by-Two was not created; he was simply present at the beginning of existence, becoming the blueprint for all that followed.

From his image, the world of Robloxia was constructed. By being copied, rotated, resized, and recolored, the foundations of terrain, architecture, and life emerged. Two-by-Two served as the primordial building block of reality within Robloxia.

Divine Role

Over time, Two-by-Two came to be revered as a divine being by the early denizens of Robloxia. As recorded in The Histories VII by Heroblockus, entire civilizations honored his image, erecting temples and monuments to bask in his reflected glory. Two-by-Two was seen not only as a creator, but as the spiritual force behind all structure and permanence.

Its essence was tied to a sacred, arcane language known as Lua, described in The Chronicles of Roblox (VIII.512) as “the tongue of the gods.” This mysterious force governed the very laws of the universe, and it was foretold that a prophet would one day make Lua known to mortals, allowing them to understand and shape the world with the same knowledge that built it.

Wonders of the World

In the Wonders of the World building contest, which ran from March 11–17, 2011, contestants were to create structures themed around the "Four Wonders of the World", and according to former administrator Shedletsky, this was a reference to Two-by-Two being a 2x2 stud brick and to honor his significance in the Roblox culture.

The Conflict with 1x1x1x1

The peace of Robloxia was shattered by the arrival of a being from beyond: 1x1x1x1, also known as The Adversary. As detailed in The Necrobloxicon, this entity originated from the fourth dimension and harbored a deep hatred for the three-dimensional world Two-by-Two had created. 1x1x1x1 sought to unravel reality, introduce chaos, and erase all that had been built.

In a confrontation at the dawn of time, Two-by-Two used his vast power to imprison 1x1x1x1 in an unknown location, sealing away the threat; at least temporarily. Though the Adversary was defeated, whispers of its potential return remain, and some claim that forces still seek to free him.

Legacy

Although it is less known compared to other legendary figures of Roblox, Two-by-Two endures as a timeless emblem of creation, order, and divine insight. Despite his limited appearances in lore, his presence is believed to be woven into the very fabric of Robloxia. Among scholars and scripters, the language of Lua is often seen as a lingering echo of Two-by-Two’s primal power, a sacred code through which mortals may access and shape the forces that govern reality itself.

2x2 appears as a minor yet influential character in the digital collectible card game Blox Cards, where players must build decks of 40 cards and then compete for victory in battles of luck and skill. Being referred to by his title of the Alpha Brick, he is solely for lore-purposes only and does not have his own card in the game.

2x2 is set to appear as an NPC and supporting character in Forsaken, a 2024 multiplayer asymmetrical horror game focused on old Roblox myths/legends such as c00lkidd and John Doe. Not much is known about him as of now, as he is still in development and unavailable to the public at the moment. In addition, he has the appearance of 1x1x1x1's original account's avatar, most likely due to 2x2 himself being just a black brick.

Powers and Abilities

Although Two-by-Two has never been seen on his own, it is possible to make some inferences about his abilities based on the sources there is. Some of these include:

Quotes

… and the secrets of the universe would be enscribed in an arcane language, spoken of only in hushed tones, and known simply as ‘Lua’ - the tongue of the gods; the vital force underlying all creation. One day it was told that a prophet would come and write a tome that would relate the cryptic ways of Lua to man, and that man might learn it and bask in the reflected glory of Two-by-Two.

...And there came into this world a great darkness. A being of pure hatred with the name of One-by-One-by-One-by-One, or, in later ages, simply The Adversary. 1x1x1x1 is an entity from the fourth dimension who loathes Robloxia for it's 3D-ness and has vowed to destroy it. 1x1x1x1 was imprisoned by Two-by-Two at the dawn of time, yet there are those who seek to free him...
~ The Necrobloxicon's old description, explaining the story of how Two-by-Two imprisoned 1x1x1x1.[5]
I posted this in a thread that subsequently died. I'm posting it here so you can refer back to it later. Keep the link to this forum. Distribute it. Tell people the truth. Because the truth is actually quite boring. Lets talk about where the name comes from. Long ago, Telamon posted a number of stories about Roblox's backstory to the News. One of these included mentions of 2x2, the first brick. Copied over and over, every other brick were it's descendents. Then, in a footnote, he mentions the evil 1x1x1x1. So that's where the name comes from. Blame John. Lets talk about why people say he's a hacker. A guy who's name is long forgotten (not Zuka) found an exploit (not CheatEngine) to insert control scripts into online places. He sent me a message, telling me he had something to demonstrate. I joined him in Crossroads, and it started raining heads saying things along the lines of "He's coming back!" and "1x1x1x1 is coming for you!" and the likes. People in the server freaked out, I found it hilarious, he gave me instructions on how it works and I reported it to the devs. End of story. Other people, like Dignity, would find other way to insert scripts, and people would assume that they have something to do with "the hacker group" 1x1x1x1. Truth is, it was one guy playing off of a Roblox Lore thing. Get over it. It's that boring.
