The United Nations Space Command, more commonly known as the UNSC, is a military, exploratory and scientific agency of the Unified Earth Government which are one of the main heroes in the Halo franchise.

The UNSC formed halfway through the 22nd Century as a remnants of old cultural ideologies clashed for supremacy in the Sol System and mainly oversaw United Nations military operations in space. The UN massively militarizing it's off-world colonies via propaganda and then defeated communist and fascist forces in the "Interplanetary War" which consisted of several side-battles that took place on Mars, the Jovian Moons and the South American rainforests. Although the Inplanetary War brought great suffering and death unto Earth and its colonies, it united Humanity's militaries into a common, armed force by the end of the 22nd Century. 

The UNSC then fought one of the greatest enemies yet: The Covenant, an alien empire who want to activate the Halo rings which will destroy all life in the galaxy. So the UNSC fought the Covenant for years until the Elites sided with Humanity and eventually destroyed the Covenant Empire by assassinating the High Prophet of Truth.

History

Interplanetary War

The UNSC has it's roots in the first World War, which led to the creation of the League of Nations. The League of Nations led the formation of the United Nations after World War 2. The UNSC itself was formed and fashioned as the result of a series of a brutal conflicts across the Solar System between 2160 and 2164; most prominent among them were the Jovian Moons Campaign, Rain Forest Wars and a series of battles on Mars.

The UNSC was planned as an emergency military government. The United Nations clashes with dissident political movements, the most important of which were "Koslovics" and "Frieden" began the crisis that led to the formation of the UNSC. The Frieden movement was a fascist organization based on the Jovian Moons, a group that recieved backing from some corporations operating in the United German Rupublic on Earth. Their ideological opponents, the Koslovics, formed a Marxist-Leninist group centered around the leadership of Vladimir Koslov around the same time.

The war began with an attack on United Nations colonial advisers on the moon of Io, one of the moons on Jupiter, but would spread to Moons and parts of South America in the Rain Forest Wars. These events culminated in a UN build-up in the mid to late 2160s, which would result in the UN establishing a unified military and a permanent Unified Earth Government as an ultimate power to lead the Human race by 2170.

Colonization

After the formation of the UNSC and Unified Earth Government, as the human population on Earth began to swell beyond what the Earth could handle with its resources, with the development of slipspace engines to allow starships to travel light years beyond the Sol System, the UNSC began spreading out and colonizing other star systems that contained habitable planets for Humanity to live on. Chief among these new colonies was the planet Reach in the Epsilon Eridani System, which in the year 2490 AD, became a major UNSC military and civilian hub world, second only to the Earth itself in terms of importance to the UNSC. By that same year, over 800 worlds became or were considered part of the UEG's territory. Outer Colonies supplied the resources to allow the Inner Colonies to function, and the UNSC had to deal with insurrections from time to time, but for the time being, everything seemed to be going in Humanity's favor. At least until the early years of the 26th Century...

The Great War

In the year 2525, the Outer Colony of Harvest was destroyed, glassed by an unforeseen enemy that the UNSC had not known about, until now. That enemy was the Covenant Empire, a large coalition of various alien races that believed Humanity was violating their religious traditions with incurring on their territory, seeing them as a blight and scourge that must be purged from the universe. Harvest was merely the early warning that Humanity was about to face its greatest challenge in its history, and the UNSC was ill-prepared for it.

Within a few years of Harvest's destruction, the Covenant had conquered all of the Outer Colonies and were moving in on the Inner Colonies. By 2552, although the UNSC had rallied and slowed the Covenant advance, it could not stop it. Things only got worse when the Covenant finally found Reach. Despite stiff resistance from the UNSC protecting Reach, including from the likes of the all-Spartan super soldier Noble Team and the UNSC Epsilon Eridani Fleet, the second most important world for the UNSC fell to the Covenant and was glassed. With Reach lost, it was only a matter of time before the Covenant found Earth and could terminate Humanity.

However, one UNSC ship, the Pillar of Autumn, was able to lure the Covenant fleet towards the ringworld of Halo near Threshold and away from Earth, if only temporarily. Thanks to the efforts of Spartan John-117, AKA Master Chief, the Covenant fleet was decimated, while the ringworld was destroyed as well, preventing it being used by the Covenant.

Unfortunately, despite Chief's efforts, a few months later, a Covenant fleet of 15 ships, known as the Fleet of Sacred Consecration, made its way to the Sol System and attacked Earth. Humanity's homeworld was now known to the Covenant, and the UNSC had to defend it with everything they had. Though the UNSC Home Fleet decimated the Covenant fleet led by the High Prophet of Regret, they did not have time to relax before the main Covenant fleet led by the Covenant leader, the High Prophet of Truth, arrived and attacked, slaughtering the Home Fleet and the Orbital Defense Platforms without mercy. Those Loyalist Covenant that survived were obsessed with completing their Great Journey, but in the end, even when a Flood-infested Covenant battlecruiser arrived on Earth and began infesting the city of Voi, the Covenant Separatist Fleet of Retribution ensured that Earth would not fall to the Loyalists or the Flood. Earth was only ensured its survival when the joint UNSC-Separatist Covenant alliance went to the Ark and killed Truth and his remaining Loyalists, shattering the Covenant Empire once and for all and saving Humanity at large.

By March 2553 AD, though the war was over, it came at a heavy price for the UNSC: Harvest, Reach, all their colonies, and even part of Earth itself, had been ravaged, with over 23 billion human casualties, but thanks to the Covenant Separatists, Humanity and the UNSC now had a chance to rebuild.

By 2589 AD, Reach had recovered from being glassed, and the UNSC immediately got to work recolonizing it.

Reconstruction

Thanks to the efforts of Thel 'Vadam and his Covenant Separatist forces with ensuring the end of the Covenant Empire and saving Humanity from utter destruction, with Humanity and the Elites now at peace with each other, the UNSC was able to begin the long process of rebuilding their vast collection of colonies that the Covenant Empire decimated in the short quarter of a century that the Human-Covenant War lasted. By the year 2589 AD, Reach had managed to recover from the effects of being glassed and was terraformed to where it could now sustain life again, and was soon being recolonized by the UNSC.
