Accelerator is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Mikoto Misaka) of the A Certain Magical Index franchise and the titular main protagonist of the A Certain Scientific Accelerator spin-off series.
He is Academy City's most powerful Esper, and one of seven Level 5s. Originally serving as an antagonist, he later becomes the main protagonist of the Science Side after his defeat at the hands of Touma Kamijou. His journey to a more "heroic" role in the story progresses after meeting and saving Last Order, and is forced into an ironic twist of fate where his life now depends on the Sisters, clones he previously killed by the thousands.
He is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto (who voiced as Katsuki Bakugo in My Hero Academia and the Twenty-Fifth Baam in Tower of God) in Japanese and by Austin Tindle in English (both of who also voiced Obi).
Appearance
Accelerator is a pale-skinned, scrawny teenage boy with short white hair and red eyes. His pale skin is a result of his power reflecting ultraviolet rays and preventing his body from producing melanin.
His ability also has an affect on his hormones, giving him an androgynous appearance, although there is definite evidence stated throughout the series whether he is a boy. In the novel/manga, when Last Order asked him "Then are you male or female?" he gave the equivocal answer, "Can't you tell?" While in the novel he is shown to have a slim, androgynous body, a bathing scene he is depicted him bare-chested and obviously male.
Accelerator also seems to have an affinity for black and white-themed clothing, which is a famous brand. In his debut, he wore a black shirt with white striped patterns before switching to a white shirt with grey V patterns. After getting shot in the head by Amai Ao, Accelerator now wears a black choker-like electrode which helps with his mobility, computation, and communication. He also uses a crutch to get around.

Accelerator is a cynical, aloof, reclusive and sardonic individual who is largely apathetic towards most people or events around him. He demonstrates some degree of mental instability due to his solitary upbringing. As such, he is also shown to be maniacal, ruthless and aggressive, especially in battle. Whenever enraged or excited like when fighting a strong or amusing opponent, he tends to break into a wide grin and laugh insanely. He is also incredibly vulgar and rude with a snarky sense of humor. While he's normally laid-back and shiftless, Accelerator can become angered by those who annoy him, making threatening remarks towards them. Moreover, he treats others in a rather callous and harsh manner, throwing in his opinion no matter how insensitive it sounds. However, underneath this hostile exterior lies someone who has helped just as many people as he's hurt.
In addition to his unhinged demeanor, Accelerator is quite sadistic and vicious, as he is fully aware of the agonizing pain he can inflict on someone and will occasionally relish in his ability to easily torture someone with just a touch, though he usually limits this to the people who attack him. His ruthlessness and aggression leads to enemies never treating him lightly and Accelerator isn't hesitant to kill people who get in his way. He can also be extremely arrogant, often belittling his opponents and insulting their lack of strength. He tends to speak in a mocking tone of voice to invoke fear in his foes.
Due to the potential of his esper ability and his title as the strongest, Accelerator has been targeted by various factions and people who sought to either usurp him of his title or eliminate him as a threat. As a result, he grew jaded, embittered, and self-centered, only seeking power and trusting few people. While he does enjoy his fights, he would really like to avoid getting into them in the first place. In fact, that's the reason why he sought more power in the first place. He claims that if power only breeds conflict, then he would have to gain absolute power so that no one could ever hope to contest against him ever again.
Additionally, during the Level 6 Shift, Accelerator was under the assumption that the Misaka clones weren't actually human and treated them as such. To make sure of this, he would always engage in conversation with them beforehand to see if they didn't want to fight and when they did he would then proceed with the experiment. In fact, he was even friendly and cordial when he met the first Misaka clone. It's heavily implied that Accelerator is somewhat a pacifist as he doesn't actively seek people to fight with, most of his fights are done in self-defence, and his passive ability deals with threats for him. Upon realizing that the sister clones are in fact alive, Accelerator develops a deep sense of remorse for his actions to the point where he breaks down when faced by Misaka Worst. It's revealed that Accelerator is a truly lonley person and secretly wishes to have friends of his own.
Furthermore, after meeting Last Order, Accelerator becomes dedicated to protecting her at all costs, although he does treat her in a cold manner. However, it's clear that he deeply cares about Last Order and even admits that his dream is to stay by her side forever. His protectiveness also extends to the other sisters as any act of dehumanizing them will send him onto a warpath, as shown when he goes after Awaki and destroys the Tree Diagram Remnant to prevent a potential repeat of Level 6 Shift from happening. Although he rarely displays affection or concern for anybody, Accelerator does have a compassionate side of himself, as seen when he buys Index lunch and protected her from the Hound Dogs, saved a girl who was tortured by Depart, and rescued a group of kids from a hostage situation. He also protected Fremea Seivelun from the Freshmen and even saved Qliphah Puzzle 545 when Coronzon attempted to kill her. While he's mistrustful of most the adults in Academy City, there are a few people that Accelerator trusts, such as Kikyou Yoshikawa, Aiho Yomikawa, and Heaven Canceller.
Because of his past actions, Accelerator refers to himself as a "villain" or "evil" and believes that he's beyond redemption, despite always saving innocent lives, minimizing damages, and putting his own life at risk for others. He sees all other bad guys as pathetic and tries to teach them how a 'real' villain should act, usually by toying with them and all but torturing them. In spite of this, Accelerator displays honorable traits, such as restraining himself during his battle with Teitoku Kakine the whole time to protect the civilians around them, claiming that even villains have standards. From Accelerator's point of view, you cannot claim to be a hero while knowingly trying to kill your opponent, thus he refuses to be called one. As he explains to a little kid that wants to help him, only Accelerator himself should have to bear the burden of being the villain who kills the bad guys to protect people.
Despite his psychotic personality, Accelerator is capable of being practical; even when he considered himself a villain, he paid for his groceries and meals instead of taking them by force, which he could easily do with his abilities. When questioned about this by Last Order, he explains that although he's powerful enough to just take anything he wants, it's too much hassle to have to deal with the authorities and others futilely trying to fight him off. Indeed, the whole reason he took part in the Level 6 experiment in the first place is because he was sick of people always attacking him, which they had been doing since he was a kid, and just wanted everyone to leave him alone.
Accelerator both admires and envies Touma's heroism and his ability to save people without using lethal force. When Last Order becomes seriously ill and he has no idea how to help her when he runs into Touma, he angrily attacks him, blaming him for being a hero, yet not doing anything to help her. Though he will loathe to admit it, Accelerator sees Touma as his personal idol, and as time goes by, he adopts his philosophy. For quite a while, he even tries to copy Touma, such as using only his right hand to fight, or finishing up by punching the enemy in the face. However, he quickly realizes just how difficult this is, causing his inferiority complex to grow even larger. Deep down, Accelerator desires to be better and redeem himself, as shown when Yomikawa was able to walk up to him and slowly take a gun from his hands before he tried to finish off Kakine after their fight, and later when he refused to hurt a Misaka Worst clone and tried to heal her wounds after she tried to kill herself. Aiwass even states that Accelerator craves for the wholesomeness of being a 'hero' like Touma, even to the point that he declared himself evil because he believes he cannot reach that level.
Moreover, due to his powerful ability, Accelerator was highly overconfident and often underestimated his enemies in the early half of the series. However, after losing to Touma as well as nearly being killed by Amata Kihara and fighting Ritoku Komaba, Accelerator starts to treat his foes more seriously. As of New Testament, after ascending to the Aeon of Horus, Accelerator displays a composed and cool attitude towards his opponents and even refrains from killing them at times. After becoming the new Board Chairman of Academy City, Accelrator shows more righteous traits, as he organizes Opperation Handcuffs with the intention of completely disbanding the Dark Side of Academy City. As part of his plan to eliminate the dark side and reform Academy City, he accepts to be sent to prison for killing the clones, despite the fact that he could easily escape. It's to the point that he refuses to break out to rescue Last Order from a threat to her, arguing that it would defeat the point if he just got out whenever he wanted to solve problems, and instead choosing to believe in the goodness of the city's residents being able to save her without his intervention.
Biography
Accelerator was alone in Academy City and he's an Esper who was defeated by Touma. In the Hound Dogs invasion Accelerator becomes good and finds information against the witnesses on he computer. Accelerator was fighting Kihara Amata to save Last Order for Misaka. Accelerator was fighting thugs in the dome & Accelerator becomes a bad guy of the GROUP in the end of Toaru Majutsu No Index II anime.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Accelerator: The eponymous esper power of the 1st ranked Level 5, which allows him to manipulate all kinds of vectors, from those related to kinetic energy to ones related to heat and electricity. It creates a thin field of AIM around him, which allows him to modify the vector values of anything he touches. It is initially limited to attacks that work using the regular physical laws, but through the use of Accelerator's massive intellect and calculating prowess, he has been able to incorporate vectors that were unknown to him and worked under different laws like Kakine's Dark Matter's, magic's or Telesma's into his equations.
- Redirection/Reflection: Accelerator's passive application of his ability which automatically inverts the direction of any incoming harmful vectors, even if he is unaware of their presence, making him virtually invincible. He can also consciously choose how this redirection happens. For example, he can scatter a barrage of bullets around him instead of reflecting them back at the shooter or redirect the force of an incoming car towards the ground so that it crashes into him and fully stops instead of bouncing backward. He is even able to choose what's allowed to affect him and what isn't. This defense works on all types of attacks: kinetic, heat, light, sound, gravity, electricity, radiation, chemical and biological weapons like gases, etc.
- Coordinate Attack Immunity: As well as stopping conventional attacks, Accelerator has demonstrated feats of preventing the activation of coordinate-based attacks inside of him along with redirecting the 11-dimensional vectors of teleportation, causing a strange undescribed phenomenon upon doing so.
- Internal Spell Immunity: In addition, by incorporating his newfound knowledge regarding Magic, Accelerator has developed an immunity to spells that specifically target his inner body, as showcased throughout his battles against Elizard's All-Dimensions Severing spell and Nephthys' water-based moisture-draining technique.
- Empathic Immunity: Perhaps as a side-effect of his heightened magical awareness, Nephthys' Tears of Transmission were incapable of affecting Accelerator's psychological state, and Qliphah's mental corruption from her dress did nothing when he looked directly at them.
- Vector Control: Accelerator's primary use of his ability. By touching an object, he is able to freely manipulate its existing vectors or even apply some new ones. This application of his power is shown to be incredibly versatile and Accelerator has made many creative uses of it in combat.
- Tactile Telekinesis: Accelerator is capable of telekinetically interacting with matter and energy by touching them and altering their vector values. With this, he's able to change an object's vectors or properties to utilize them in an unorthodox manner, such as turning a common item into a deadly projectile. This is best seen in his fight with Touma Kamijou, when he lightly kicked a rock to make it shoot like a bullet, or when he stomped on train rails to push them out of their sockets, and lightly knocked on them to make those rails rain upon Touma. He can also turn regular falling leaves into a storm of razor sharp bullets.
- Enhanced Strength: One of the most basic uses of his power, Accelerator can exponentially increase his strength to superhuman levels by manipulating his own vectors. He can send vehicles, humans or powered suits flying with what should be a light touch, which is considered holding back as he's capable of simply causing a human to explode with a light tap. He can similarly collapse a large section of a wall just by tapping his hand on it.
- Enhanced Speed: By altering the vectors for the motion of his feet, Accelerator can cover long stretches of ground in one step at high speeds, with the movement compared to a bullet since he's using his powers to essentially shoot himself forwards in a straight line.
- Matter Manipulation: Accelerator has shown to be able to control matter on a macro-quantum level. He managed to rearrange Last Order's electrons in her brain while saving her life. During his battle with Teitoku Kakine, Accelerator is able to manipulate his dark matter which is comprised of subatomic particles. He also can manipulate Shizuri Mugino's Meldowner beams due to them being made up of high speed electrons.
- Air Manipulation: One of Accelerator's most common uses of his power is to manipulate the vectors of the air surrounding him to affect the air in a large area, being able to affect the entirety of Academy City before suffering his brain injury. He can use this high-velocity wind in numerous ways: he can create air blasts/shockwaves, spear-like gusts of 120m/s wind, tornadoes, air bindings to restrain/crush humans, compressed air spheres that he can slam into the enemy as an attack, walls of wind that can trap an enemy and even a spherical wind barrier as protection. However, manipulating air through vectors requires extremely difficult calculations, so these can be disturbed by an opponent in specific ways to disturb those calculations and counter his attempts to use wind.
- Plasma Creation: Accelerator can further compress the wind at high speeds in a single point to create plasma. Compressing the air like this creates tremendous amounts of heat, forcibly causing the atoms in the nearby air to split into cations and electrons which then turn into plasma, culminating in a sphere of light with a radius of 20 meters and a temperature of 10000º. This technique has a long charge time, so Accelerator normally doesn't use it.
- Flight: Accelerator can create 4 high-powered tornadoes attached to his back in order to fly.
- Air Bomb: By crushing the air in his fist and pressurizing it, Accelerator can create a giant bomb. With this, he threatened to reduce Nephthys down to zero percent (as she is able to regenerate from 1% of her existence remaining) after shortly prior proving capable of injuring her by using a similar attack that pressurized a drop of water in order to cut.
- Temperature Control: Through instantaneous expansion of air, Accelerator can manipulate the temperature of objects all he likes, doing things like using adiabatic expansion to freeze water.
- Gravity Manipulation: Accelerator willingly allows gravity to affect him in order to anchor himself onto the planet and can likely modify that at will, allowing for very limited levitation.
- Body Manipulation: By touching a person, Accelerator can read all the vectors in their body and take total control of their body. He can use this to reverse their bloodflow and/or bioelectricity, which would instantly kill them. He can similarly instantly rip off all the skin of a human by touching them. Accelerator can also similarly manipulate his own bloodflow to survive what otherwise would be lethal injuries, like when he used his vector manipulation to keep his blood circulating after Aiwass had nearly cut him in half with its wings, even circulating his blood through air. He can likely do the same with his own bioelectricity.
- Heat Generation: By manipulating certain vectors, Accelerator can create heat or flames. When he was surrounded by metallic sand particles, Accelerator managed to manipulate the friction of all the sand colliding with each other and release the heat produced from that to ignite the debris with fire, turning into a tornado of flames. He can also trigger dust explosions if there enough dust in the air.
- Sound Manipulation: Accelerator can use his power to affect sound. This best shown when he tweaks his redirection to nullify all sound around him so as to not be bothered and when he reflects Last Order's voice back at her but amplified. He also amplified the cries of some monkeys, creating a powerful omnidirectional blast of sound. He can also use sound like sonar to map out a ship he's just entered to figure out where to go by simply tapping his cane to the ground.
- Energy Manipulation: In addition to manipulating matter, Accelerator is able to manipulate and shape various types of energy. For example, he was able to shape the AIM energy of Fuze Kazakiri to set up an energy barrier that would contain the massive explosion that was caused when Gabriel collapsed into pure energy, after trying to contain it by himself failed. During his group's fight with the grimoire recreations of the Golden Dawn magic cabal Accelerator came up with a way to manipulate and obstruct the ambient magical energy that flows from leylines and gives grimoires their regeneration, allowing him to damage and destroy both them and similar beings like the artificial demon Qliphah Puzzle 545 that will otherwise recover from any damage they suffer.
- Kinetic Energy Absorption: If needed, Accelerator can obtain massive amounts of energy for his techniques by syphoning it off the planet's rotation, revolution and all other forces. As seen with his attack on the Windowless Building, Accelerator can use up so much of the planet's rotational energy that it slows down the earth's rotation by about 5 minutes. Theoretically this attack should allow him to extinguish all life on the planet.
- Vector Analysis: Accelerator can sense and perceive the environment entirely through vectors, obtaining information such as frequency, speed, magnitude, size, structure, etc. One common application of this power is for him to predict the enemy's movements using the analyzed information.
- Vector Transformation: Accelerator can amplify and convert existing vectors to create a force that absorbs everything in an area towards a designated point, as if mimicking a black hole's gravity. For example, by using this technique with a ship's vectors he was able to lift into the air the water around the ship and the ship itself.
- Vector Blade: Accelerator gathers weight or other vectors into a razor-thin blade that he can send towards the enemy as an invisible and silent slicing attack. For example, he once sliced the chains binding a prisoner just by moving his fingers, and when terrorists were trying to fight him the narrations describes their bodies being harmed as soon as they acted hostile without mentioning Accelerator ever needing to touch them.
- Earth Manipulation: By manipulating the vectors on his feet, Accelerator can cause an explosion made of earth and launch rocks to attack his opponents with a stomp. If he wants to, he can launch stones faster than a railgun. When doing this the stones vanish after a few millimeters, but the intense pressure waves continue. He can also create gigantic fissures, earth tsunamis and several earth spears to pierce his opponents.
- Shockwave Generation: Accelerator can cause powerful shockwaves and earthquakes with any of his movements, though he seems to prefer using it with a stomp or causing a shockwave while landing after flying into a large group of enemies.
- Brain Hacking: According to Accelerator, by redirecting the electrical signals of the human body he can take 'control' over them and rewrite the memories and personality of the people as was shown in volume 5 with Last Order, though unlike proper mental type espers who can interpret those signals, he needs a previous reference to be able to achieve concrete effects. This technique requires immense amounts of calculation power. Since those completely strained the brain of Accelerator prior to suffering brain injury, it's unlikely he can replicate the same feat after losing half his calculation power.
- Concussive Force: Accelerator can generate a strong repulsive force on things that he touches with his palm. He is able to project this force onto things like steel doors or pipes to destroy them and can even cause damage to a human body if used on them.

- Awakening: A notable aspect of Accelerator's powers is that on occasions he has been able to grow various types of wings that have been compared the wings possessed by angels. During some of these episodes, he has also spoken "angelic language", which is what happens when an angel or angelic creature wants to express a concept that cannot be conveyed through human language, resulting in them saying a word that's close to what they mean (but not exactly) surrounded by random letters; and once even gained a halo. The appearance of new wings usually follow a self-realization of Accelerator's mental state or an evolution of his power due to an external factor.
- Black Wings: Accelerator manifests dozens of dark wings that seem more like jets than wings as they spray a jet black ink-like substance that seems to swallow light. Also, Accelerator's voice starts to produce weird noises in this state as he tries to speak angelic language, much like Gabriel or Aiwass do at times. The wings are incredibly sharp, easily slicing through multiple buildings just by its regular movements when they first appear. The shape and size of the wings can be controlled by Accelerator at will, who can even split a wing into a rain of dozens of sharp stakes, each one of them being 100 meters long. While using the wings Accelerator's body is much more durable, easily taking a grenade exploding centimeters away from his head without suffering a scratch. He is also capable of utilizing an 'unexplainable invisible power', capable of launching Amata Kihara into the sky at dozens of times at the speed of sound, turning him into plasma; as well as crushing Teitoku Kakine deep into the ground and tearing off his right hand with a single motion of his hand. Going by his and Rensa's uses of these wings, they seem to appear when Accelerator's emotions run out of control and/or he's cornered in a fight.
- White Wings:An apparently more powerful version of his black wings, Accelerator first manifested these wings during the climax of World War III. While not much is known about these wings, his defenses rise considerably with them; as he was able to tank a attack that could destroy all of Eurasia without his vector shield. Unlike the previous wings, these ones seem to be created by Accel's honest desire to protect something. Noticeably, the first time he used these wings he also manifested an angelic white halo, but neither he or Rensa have managed to replicate this halo in later uses of the white wings. By flapping the wings Accelerator can convert some 'unknown energy' into lift and fly without emitting any force down to the earth.
- Platinum Wings: The third set of wings displayed by Accelerator which he gained after his second fight with Nephthys, when the Will of the Misaka Network lent her power to him and Qliphah Puzzle 545. Qliphah basically inserted the Misaka Network into the world as Clonoth, a new Tree to go alongside the Sephiroth and Qliphoth as the tree of science, which resulted in Accelerator's wings evolving to this new state, as part of the ceremony involved giving him her magical knowledge in a symbolic crossing of the Abyss. The wings are similar to those of Aiwass, and are a combination of both magic and scientific knowledge. With these wings, Accelerator is able to, much like a holistic esper, produce a macroscopic change in the world to then cause a small microscopic effect. In his case, he shook the entire galaxy in order to induce a forced astral projection in Coronzon, knocking the demon out of its vessel body. The same 'unknown energy' used in his previous winged forms can now be converted into spears-like shapes that are able to nullify magical phenomenon through its inflicted damage.
- Magic: Accelerator has demonstrated a basic understanding of magic and is able to use it to some extent. He used his vector ability to interpret the song used by Index to save Last Order and repeated the breathing method, casting the spell. As this was a pure magic spell, he suffered serious harm but saved Last Order. After an explanation on magic theory provided by Leivinia Birdway, Accelerator displays his extreme delicate control over magic to having a side effect of using magic as unnaturally sweating rather than rupture of blood vessels and organ damage. An example of this is even when he has only a rough idea what Feng Shui was, he is able to use a limited magic detection and then combine it with his knowledge of group psychology to increase its accuracy. His knowledge on magic has since deepened even further. He demonstrated manipulating the vectors of magic in order to eliminate Qliphah Puzzle 545's contract with Coronzon, without harming her. After crossing the Abyss and embedding the Clonoth into reality, Accelerator has gained a much better understanding of magic. Qliphah Puzzle 545 has stated that Accelerator had now fully analyzed the world of magic and can better use magic himself, although to what extent is still currently unknown.
- Clonoth: The previously unnamed Tree which Accelerator rewrote and implanted into the Phase. So far he has demonstrated that once a connection is established to this tree through Qliphah (likely instantaneous) it increases his calculation powers and upgrades his reflection capabilities. Giving him now the ability to manipulate unknown energy in the form of invisible vortex-like spears to null Magic and an upgraded field that carries Anti-Magic properties.
Abilities
- Extraordinary Intellect: Accelerator has proven to be one of the most smartest character in the series. His intellect exceeds a hundred supercomputers. Accelerator's esper ability has been shown to require complex calculations to function, with him being skilled enough in this field to come up with a new application on the fly during his battle against Touma. He also appears to have a very good memory, as he memorized the codes for Last Order's default mind state and was able to remotely return her to that condition, thus erasing the virus planted into her by Ao Amai. Later, he also starts to display well-thought out strategies in battle, like when he was able to take out the Hound Dogs using guns, which he utilized for the first time against them, along with exploiting his immediate environment and psychological tactics to his advantage, without using his esper ability. Even with less than half of his calculation ability, it is great enough to allow Accelerator to calculate and analyze all the 25,000 different kinds of energy of Teitoku Kakine's Dark Matter was emitting at once and updating his ability in order to reflect them, while fighting on par with Kakine and protecting the bystanders. Unknown with Platinum wings. Has likely tremendous amount of knowledge about the occult to an exponential degree via the third tree. Has access to all of Academy City's resources and databases with the authority as the Board Chairman.
Trivia
- His favorite drink is black coffee. He is shown to be buying many cans of it in episode 19. There was even a promotion of black coffee with Accelerator on the cans.
