| ~ Baldi's catchphrase when he was a teenager in the in-game comic. |
Professor Baldi Baldimore, is the titular main antagonist of Basically Games Baldi's Basics series.
He is one of the ME's creations, who born in a shadow realm until sent to Baltimore city and grew up and worked as a inventor. Starting out as a goofy and easily angered teenager, after doing negative things, Baldi decided to atone for his actions by becoming a superhero so he could, presumably, help and save the citizens from trouble.
In 1999, he founded both Schoolhouse and later upgraded it to a Super Schoolhouse, where he served as the head teacher who giving an unnamed explorer Student math problems to solve on a You Can Think Pad or one of his several Math Machines before the student could turn in his notebook. Despite his calm and encouraging demeanor, a twist reveals a more sinister side to Baldi's personality when the student makes his first mistake.
He is voiced by series creator, Micah James "Mystman12" McGonigal, who also voices Playtime, It's a Bully, Principal of the Thing, Gotta Sweep, Dr. Reflex, Null, and the ME in the same series.
Appearance
Unlike his original comic strip counterpart, this Baldi has a distinctly colored appearance, but rather than being a typical human like his original comic strip counterpart. He is depicted as a a poorly-modeled CGI humanoid in Anim8or, bald with a single hair strand, prominent nose, red lips, wide smile, and a pitch-black mouth interior. He wears a green shirt, blue pants, and orange/Light Brown shoes. His hands are circular with straw-like fingers, his neck is cone-shaped, and his left elbow is blue. His left elbow is blue in Baldi's Basics Plus, and gray in Baldi's Basics Classic and Birthday Bash. Like his original comic strip counterpart, although he has no visible ears, his poster mentions that he has an excellent sense of hearing.
Baldi's facial expression while chasing the player is neutral and does not show anger, although it is highly compressed and distorted. This is most likely due to dithering.
Personality
Baldi has a quirky, cartoon-like personality, but he can sometimes become deranged, angry, or violent toward other characters. However, unlike his original comic strip counterpart, he feels remorse for his actions toward other characters after becoming a superhero and, presumably, is determined to protect Earth. Despite his setbacks, he is a highly intelligent individual, capable of inventing the Jackhammer99, which clips toenails, although his invention failed.
Baldi's favorite food is cookies. He loves this delicacy and is often shown to be obsessed with it, as shown in the comic Baldi Cookies. This suggests that after being created by the ME, he became deeply attached to it.
Like his original comic strip counterpart, Baldi is also shown to have a voracious appetite and enjoys inventing several inventions in his spare time, such as the Jackhammer, the You Can Think Pad, the math machine, the fog machine, the portal poster, his invention that reverses gravity, the teleporter, and a shrinking machine.
| “ | Great teacher due to his incredible hearing abilities! He can not only tell where any sound came from, but who made it too! | „ |
| ~ Description of Baldi himself, as an adult. |
During his adult life in the game, Baldi is shown to have matured and changed significantly since his teenage years, as well as being shown a friendly and popular head teacher, as evidenced by his poster in the Principal's office, where the staff refer to him as "Great Teacher" due to his hearing sense. He is also shown to be a supportive and helpful teacher, as he tutors other students on how to use and operate his You Can Think Pad and gives them Quarters as rewards. His lack of cartoonish behavior, or even showing much emotion in general, also implies that Baldi cares deeply for young children.
However, in contrast to his original comic strip counterpart, he is later revealed to be a cruel and abusive head teacher; beating students with his ruler if they don't answer math problems correctly, punishing them in his shadow/void-like realm, and possibly transforming them into objects, even the staff, including the Principal of the Thing, cannot fire him or report him to the police. While it can be assumed that he is somewhat obsessed with math, it is more likely he did something heinous and wouldn't admit to it until he was caught in 1992[1]. Baldi is also depicted as having dysgraphia, meaning he can't write or spell correctly, such as "Bald's Bus" and the abandoned spelling room in Baldi's Basement, and there are many other texts, such as posters, that also contain typos and errors, although it is unknown whether he wrote them. Baldi also claims that playing hide-and-seek or tag with the Student is actually a disguise to hide his true nature and instead of playing hide-and-seek properly, he becomes hostile and chases him to try to make him lose after answering questions incorrectly. Baldi is also shown to be a pleasant person when he congratulates the Student after collecting all seven of his friend's notebooks and immediately threatens him to get out while he still can.
Despite his manipulative and cunning nature, Baldi actually cares about others, including the Student, and the surrounding community. In version 0.6 of Baldi's Basics Plus, if the player robbed Johnny's Store, Baldi would become increasingly angry each time they stole an item, and he would also target the store after the alarm went off, though this was removed after an update. Baldi knows how to apologize and be polite. As stated in the description of the Farm Field Trip before the newly created farm field trip, it says, "The farm field trip will return shortly! Baldi apologizes for the delay."
As shown in the secret ending of Baldi's Basics Classic, it is later revealed that Baldi is the mind control/possession victim of a corrupted entity that wants to destroy the game, yet the lack of the evil role, Null, thus the source of the line "Get out while you still can" is Null himself and provides a reason for Baldi being a cruel head teacher, despite Null's lack of information about his evil. He is also tortured by Null, becoming stretched and distorted, and it is heavily implied that he locks him in the debug room, which leaves Baldi crying and despairing. After Null was deleted from the game, Baldi's personality is now changed and free from mind control/possessed, although he was chasing the Student only immediately before, Baldi is shown to be very kind to him in the new secret endings of Baldi's Basics Classic Remastered, explaining negative numbers, playing a song, and allowing him to help test his new shrinking machine in Classic, Party, and Demo style, which shows that Baldi forgives the Student.
