Chihiro Ogino has declared The Explorer Student is to be renamed to Student (Baldi's Basics) for the following reason(s): Although his role is an explorer, as he explores the entire school, he is never officially referred to as "the Explorer Student" in the game, and the fandom usually refers to this character as just "the Student", in addition to the nicknames Protagonist and Player. Please discuss it on the talk page for this article. "I want you to know my real name. It's Chihiro." |
| NOTE: This article is about the Student that we play throughout the main series. For characters with the same name, see here |
| NOTE: While the Student often refers to as "the Player", they are treated as different character. |

The Student, also known as the Player, is the main protagonist of Basically Games Baldi's Basics series.
He is one of the titular antagonist's students who wants to retrieve his unnamed friend's seven lost notebooks while avoiding his teacher and other obstacles. However, after reaching the final exit and heading to Baldi's office in the original game, the Student instead encounters a corrupted entity, Null, who tells him to destroy the game.
Appearance
Based on the gauge icon in the bottom right corner of your screen in Baldi's Basics Plus, it can be inferred that the Student is a boy. Much like the students in Baldi's Basics Plus, he is a small, poorly detailed humanoid boy with a round head, a teardrop-shaped nose, small black eyes, and a wide smile. The Student has short, ball-shaped hair and a rectangular body. He wears a long-sleeved shirt with blue pants and gray-soled shoes, with two fingers raised while the other is lowered. His actual color is still unknown, as his appearance is based on Student_0's design and just avatar silhouette-like appearance.
In the gameplay however, if the player hacks by disabling the first-person view and forcing the mesh to be visible the Student's identity is a tall, grayish-white cylindrical model. Mystman12 even refers to him as a Capsule Collider, based on the model's name. The cylinder is actually a Unity-Mesh Type.
Personality
The Student is very skilled at quick mental problems such as addition and subtraction in math problems, when answering in his friend's notebook, or entering numbers into the Math Machine at the time. However, he fails to solve more complicated problems because they are either completely impossible, or he does not understand how to solve them.
His morality can be shaped by his actions. For example, despite not having to cut Playtime's jump rope (which is considered a rude act but temporarily thwarts her as an obstacle), the Student can do so without hesitation. Given that the Safety Scissors have no other friendly use, it is implied that he would always reach for and use them for the purpose of cutting Playtime's jump rope, or other similarly evil acts such as cutting the 1st Prize cord. However, doing so gives him extra time to evade his teacher Baldi, thus resulting in a greater chance of survival, even at the expense of others. Therefore, it can be assumed that all of the questionable things the Student does or may do are in the spirit of avoiding his teacher and not being a nuisance.
While it is possible that the Student only does it for the sake of getting items or You Thought Points, he does go on field trips with his teacher Baldi and helps other students find their Lost Items, so it seems that he has at least been social and helpful since his first school. He seems to lack many of the human traits that would normally make scenarios like the original Schoolhouse and Super Schoolhouse impossible, such as fear or shock that would normally make others too affected to engage in Baldi's scenarios efficiently and survive.
It can be assumed that the Student is not very assertive or strong, as he is unable to avoid the dangers that others bring to the school, such as getting trapped by the Playtime jump rope, failing It's a Bully without any items, being caught breaking school rules by Principal Thing, being easily pushed around by Gotta Sweep or Champion 1, being caught chewing Peanuts, slipping on 'Nana Peel', being told to get to Mrs. Pomp's class on time and being dragged by her, and being forced to take Dr. Reflex's reflex test and being stepped on by his hammer. Furthermore, his generosity and lack of assertiveness is shown by the fact that he is willing to stay after school.
The Student also seems to be loyal and altruistic as well. Yet a very curious student, as he managed to find all of the secrets in Classic Remastered, despite Null warning him not to continue.
Biography
Early Life
Not much is known about the Student's past, except that he has parents. At one point, he was admitted to an elementary school, Schoolhouse, and met the head teacher and professor of the school, Baldi Baldimore. On his first day at Schoolhouse, the Student was able to answer math problems correctly and easily without making any mistakes. At an unknown time, he met an unnamed student, and they became friends.
As school was about to close, his friend accidentally left his seven notebooks at school, and he couldn't retrieve them because he was busy "eating practice." Upon learning that his friend had left his seven notebooks, the Student had to collect them at Schoolhouse while solving math problems.
Classic
When the Student arrives at school, he is greeted and welcomed into the Schoolhouse by Baldi. He is then instructed by his teacher to collect two of his classmates' notebooks, in order to pass through the swinging doors and answer three math questions in both notebooks using the You Can Think Pad. After the Student answers all three questions correctly, he is congratulated and given a quarter by Baldi to use later on his journey. However, after the Student answers the third question in the second notebook incorrectly, which is inevitable, he is suddenly chased by Baldi who also suddenly becomes very angry with the residents of the school will appear. The more math questions the Student answers incorrectly, the faster his teacher will slap the ruler and move. During his journey, the Student will use various items throughout the school to evade everyone, including Baldi.
After the Student finds and collects all seven of his classmates' notebooks, he is congratulated by Baldi before yelling and threatening to get out while he still can and to make his way to the exit. At some point, all the exits will disappear, showing a map indicating where the Student is until the last fourth exit, which he must pass through to escape the school. Once the Student finds the real exit and escapes Baldi, he will suddenly hear a mysterious voice that will congratulate him and then tell him to do worse because he needs something. The Student will hear this and will return the next day.
The next day, after answering all the math questions incorrectly and reaching the final exit, the Student will be transported to a short hallway near Baldi's Office with a grayed-out image of Baldi and text telling him to meet Baldi in his office for some tips. Once he enters the office, instead of his teacher, the Student will mee the Entity who's standing behind a desk with a floating banana, accompanied by Baldi with his sprite distorted and stretched out. He will then be warned by the Entity to never tell anyone about the game, to close it, destroy it, and never play it again. After speaking, the Entity will transport the Student to his home.
Demo Style
A few days/months later after the events of Baldi's Basics Classic/Classic style of Classic Remastered, the Student plans to go to school to figure out the story and the lore of the game. When the Student arrives at school for the second time, he is greeted by Baldi again who calls his school a "demo". This time, the Student will have to put in the right number balloon into the seven Math Machines across the Schoolhouse's classrooms and each of the machines has only one question. No matter if he got the question right or not, a notebook would pop out. However, when the Student puts the wrong number balloon into the second Math Machine, which is also unsolvable, he is of course chased by his very angry teacher Baldi and everything else stays the same. During his journey, the Student has the opportunity to avoid his teacher by answering correctly on every one of the machines, which results in Baldi becoming passive for five seconds.
In the canon ending, the Student will receive a Portal Poster if he answers all the math machines and answers six bonus questions, with getting the seventh notebook not counting. Using this item near the Safety Scissors poster reveals a small hallway. In the hallway, there is a ladder that allows the Student to enter Baldi's Basement. In the basement, he finds the different rooms that created by his teacher such as the library, the sewers, and the spelling room, where the letters of the alphabet are located. After solving a small puzzle and entering the faculty room with Baldi's shrinking machine, the Student meet the Entity, who later known as Null, again in this room and scolds him for not destroy the game, until Null figures out why he is still playing, as to "figure out the story and the lore!".
