Hero Overview

It's up to us now. We have to return this egg. We have to keep it safe and carry it to Xadia.
~ Callum deciding to return the egg of the Dragon Prince to Xadia and end the war between elves, dragons, and humans.

Prince/High Mage Callum is one of the three main protagonists (alongside King Ezran and Rayla) of Netflix’s The Dragon Prince/King ongoing franchise.

He is the stepson of King Harrow, and one of the two princes of Katolis (alongside his younger half-brother Ezran), who goes on an adventure to get the Dragon Prince to his mother and end the war between elves, humans, and dragons. He is also the boyfriend of the Moonshadow elf Rayla.

In Book 4: Earth, two years after the war with Lord Viren, he becomes the new High Mage of Katolis. He also has a distant relationship with Rayla, who traveled to find and exact her revenge on Viren. Eventually, during their journey to stop Aaravos, the two reconciled their relationship. Seven years later, they become parents to the first half-human, half-elf child in many generations; a daughter who is named after his late mother.

He is voiced by Jack DeSena, who also voices as Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe from Avatar: The Last Airbender and MK from LEGO Monkie Kid.

Personality

Callum has a dry sense of humor, where he makes jokes or with his friends when they are not in danger. Callum also wants to learn magic because he was always interested in it, but was never able to be good at anything.

Callum also can lash out at others when they do the same or to make people less insecure about themselves, although he mostly does it for good reasons and apologizes when in the former situation. Despite his flaws, Callum is a selfless individual, as he cares about others more than his own.

He also refuses to use dark magic, as he knows it's wrong, and only used it once when a dragon was about to get killed by Soren and several human soldiers, and refused it's temptation even when he was very sick and was likely going to die from it. Callum is also very protective of his brother, and would become paranoid when he thought he was in danger when Ezran was planning a birthday party for him.

Despite all of this, Callum has a great desire to learn more magic, and Aaravos notes that him using dark magic once had caused him to become tainted by darkness and he says Callum would fall right to his hand. His desire to become more powerful was so big that he didn't destroy the Key of Aaravos, despite him knowing that it could cause bad things to happen. Callum also had some problems accepting Rayla back because of her leaving him, but he came to reconcile with her later on upon discovering that she is his one deep truth; his light that shines brightly enough to fill the darkness/evil deep within him.

It's revealed that Callum is deeply regretful for using dark magic for Rayla's sake, and tried his best to avoid using it. However, three years later, Ocean Mage Finnegrin had goaded a desperate Callum do it when he told him he planned to kill Rayla out of spite for Callum punching him in front of his crew, since it made Finnegrin look weak. He had again resorted to it a third time to imprison Aaravos in a cursed golden coin, but it was interrupted. However, this still left a moon-white streak in his hair that gradually begins to spread, enough for him to be fully tainted and corrupted by his inner darkness, as Kosmo had warned if Callum ever resorted to dark magic again.

Backstory

Callum was born on the fifteen day/night of July somewhere in the Kingdom of Katolis to a warm-hearted poet Damian and General Sarai of the Standing Battalion during a full moon. Greatly resembling his open-minded, philosophical, poetic father, Callum had lived out the first three to four years of his infancy and being an equally smart and funny toddler until his father had passed on by succumbing to an unspecified breathing illness he had been afflicted with all his life. For the next year, he was doted on by his grieving widowed mother and deaf aunt until the former had accepted a proposal from Prince Harrow himself.

The Dragon Prince

Book One: Moon

At fourteen years old, a cocky and insightful but awkward Prince Callum continued his very best to live up to being adopted into the Katolisian royal family as the stepson of King Harrow and being a good elder half-brother to the nine-year-old heir apparent Ezran. Upon learning that highly trained, brutal elfin assassins are coming to do away with his stepfather in retribution for turning the mighty King of the Dragons to stone and presumably crushing the egg of the great Sky Dragon Prince himself, Callum was determined to go and help the Crownguard in the search, but was rebuffed by his good friend Soren, a fellow Crownguard.

Book Two: Sky

After reading his stepfather's "final" words to him, Prince Callum becomes more fascinated by the rune-cube he had pleadingly asked Rayla to retrieve for him at the Banther Lodge, now knowing it is is called "the Key of Aaravos" and starts rolling it. Noticing mysterious marks left pointing to only one single direction to wherever this "great power" dwells deeper in Xadia, Callum is determined to finally get the hang of the sky arcanum in order to prove Moon Mage Lujanne and others wrong, that humans can indeed do magic other than "dark" magic considered an atrocity!

His theory and everlastingly fierce dedication is ultimately tested when he chooses to cast a dark spell he recalled Claudia casting to restrain the illusions of him and Crown Prince Ezran a few days ago, and Callum magically turns the chains that restrained a Sunfire dragon female into slithering green-black venomous snakes, as he desired to stop Rayla from making any mistakes to endanger herself for Pyrrah's sake. It was this rash first attempt in casting dark magic that resulted in Callum passing out and falling a feverish nightmare of both confusion and epiphany in finally mastering the Sky primal source at last under his own sheer willpower. He demonstrates this to an astonished Rayla, Bat and the infant Dragon Prince Azymondias, by again casting the Aspiro Sky spell which utilizes his own breath as a very powerful and useful weapon from a distance.

Traveling the into Eastern Xadia itself with Rayla and Zym, Prince Callum is nervous at making a good first impression upon meeting Rayla's people of the Silvergrove village in the Moonshadow Forest by donning a weak disguise identical to that of an Earthblood elf. However, he is confused at discovering that he, alongside Rayla and Zym, is completely invisible and unheard to all who live there, as Rayla soon reveals that she has been, in fact, "ghosted" from her homeland.

The Dragon King

Book One: Blood

Seven long years of shared peace and conflict has left High Mage Callum, now twenty-four years old and living in Evrkynd, continuing as Primal High Mage for his younger half-brother, nineteen-year-old King Ezran, has been equally renowned and feared for his extraordinarily high aptitude and affinity of magic and being wholly capable of maintaining his unique role as the first and youngest human being to ever have full access to more than one type of magic in his own right, and without the requirement of any the rare primal stones or gemstones as the rest of his kind does. Having had been a highly accomplished archmage prodigy in Sky magic for an whole decade, in addition to seven more years of perfecting Ocean magic, Callum has more than settled into his new life in Evrkynd City alongside his beloved elfin partner Rayla. The two have grown ever closer since reaffirming their romance at the Star Nexus, and then their stressful yet temporary defeat of Archmage Aaravos, and have now become loving parents to the first half-elf, half-human child to be born in all of Xadia- A daughter whom Rayla has named in honor of her late human grandmother's and her never-ending bravery to the very end!

Now an infinitely loving and deeply devoted father himself, Primal/Deep/Dark High Mage Callum, as a young adult, shows how deeply and infinitely he genuinely loves his newborn daughter with all this heart, wondering how he could he could love her more than he loves anything in the world, becasue she is both his and Rayla's child. An additional white streak has appeared in his brown hair alongside the very first one he had gotten from resorting to dark magic a third time in spite of said spirit/essence-imprisoning spell via the empty cursed golden coin not being fully completed. This addition of further whiteness starting to spread throughout Callum's hair on its own is merely signs that Callum shall indeed be fully overwhelmed by the perpetual empty corruption and wholeheartedly embrace his own innermost darkness in its entirety, no matter what he tries to fight it.
