Castiel is one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Bobby Singer) of the Supernatural franchise.
He is an angel from Heaven and the best friend of Dean Winchester, who he rescued after he was sent to Hell and tortured there.
He is played by Misha Collins, who also played Jacob in the Stonehenge Apocalypse and Dylan in Ringer.
Seasons 4-5
Castiel was sent to rescue Dean from Hell, being the first Angel that the latter met. He later met Sam Winchester and became a friend of his too.
Initially, Castiel was blindly following orders from Heaven, in what he believed was service to God. He later began to question these orders and rebelled against his angelic brethren, which garnered him a terrible reputation in Heaven, one likened only to Lucifer. Castiel's loyalty shifted to the Winchesters, assisting them on their hunts and against powerful enemies such as the archangels (Michael, Lucifer) and much later the Darkness. Castiel aided in stopping the Apocalypse, but was killed by Lucifer before the latter was sent back to his cage in Hell. Castiel was brought back by God (for the second time), who also promoted him to a Seraph (a higher class of angel). He was also revealed to be the one who freed Sam from the Cage, though unknown to him he was soulless.
Seasons 6-7
Castiel became one of the main antagonists in season 6, absorbing the souls of Purgatory and proclaiming himself the new God and killing thousands of angels who were followers of Raphael, although he eventually redeems himself (after dying and being brought back by God for the third time), and assists the Winchesters in taking down Dick Roman, the leader of the Leviathans, a species he inadvertently set loose on the world from Purgatory, in season 7.
Seasons 8-10
In season 8, Castiel, along with all other angels (save for the archangels), was expelled from Heaven by Metatron and had his grace taken from him, and as a result no longer had any of his abilities. Although he would eventually regain some of his power through other angels' grace and defeat Metatron, the latter unfortunately killed Dean before his downfall, and Dean would soon be resurrected as a demon by the Mark of Cain. Castiel later reclaimed his grace from Metatron in season 10, restoring his strength.
Seasons 11-13
In season 11, Castiel agreed to be possessed by Lucifer after The Darkness was freed by the removal of the Mark of Cain, believing the latter could help defeat The Darkness. Castiel remained possessed for most of season 11, until The Darkness forcefully removed Lucifer from his vessel. After the fact, Castiel awakens as God is weak and dying, and eventually gives up hope, until God reconciles with his sister and is healed by her. Castiel was killed by Lucifer in season 12, and would remain dead until season 13, when Jack, the nephilim born of Lucifer, called out to Castiel, whom he had accepted as his father figure. Castiel awoke in a place known as the Empty and forced the ruler, the Shadow, to send him back to Earth, which the latter begrudgingly agreed to.
Season 14
In season 14, after an version of the archangel Michael from an alternate reality possessed Dean and sought to wreak havoc upon the main universe, Castiel was one of many who desperately tried to find a way to stop Michael. Jack eventually killed Michael and reclaimed his lost power by absorbing his grace, at the cost of his own soul. Despite Jack's soullessness and eventual misdeeds, Castiel still tried to protect him, until God, who had just returned, turned against the three and killed Jack, then releasing all the souls from Hell upon the Winchesters and Castiel.
Season 15
Following the war with God, he was taken by The Shadow along with Billie to The Empty in a self-sacrifice after he allowed himself to be happy by admitting his love for Dean. However, once Jack became the new God, he was resurrected as Bobby Singer mentioned that Castiel helped him reshape Heaven.
Powers and Abilities
Powers
- Seraphim Physiology: After Castiel was killed by Lucifer during the Apocalypse, God resurrected him and endowed Castiel with new and stronger powers, as Castiel himself said, "I do believe he brought me back. New and improved" making him more powerful than before. He later in the episode named Blood Brother reveals in that he's now a Seraph, a higher rank of angel. Not only has he gained greatly enhanced powers (healing, resurrection, teleporting, smiting, reality warping, soul channeling, soul reading, psychokinesis removal and chronokinesis) but he retains all of his previous ones, but now he is independent from Heaven and could function with his powers independently of Heaven. His power and strength growth is emphasized by the fact that when he was a regular angel, an angel of similar rank, like Uriel, was capable of beating him, but in the seasons following his promotion to Seraph, even groups of angels are incapable of killing him, although they are likely lesser angels and are naturally weaker than him. At times, he has been able to completely overwhelm and brutally slaughter his angelic siblings, as seen when Hannah's angels were torturing him, but he broke out and killed them after they murdered Her, though his strength may have been partially due to the Attack Dog Spell that Rowena had cast on him. But then initially following his rescue from Purgatory, Castiel appeared weakened from his time in the monster realm as he is quickly drained from using his powers such as teleporting or killing a low-level demon. However, this seemed to be temporary as he later but quickly recovered his full seraph abilities. After Metatron took Castiel's grace in order to cast out all angels from Heaven, Castiel lost his angelic powers (excluding hearing angel radio and recognizing other angels) and was rendered human and powerless. Castiel has later gotten what is left of his grace back and has stated he is back to full power, though he has broken wings, making him a Seraph again. Although over time after The Fall, he stated that his powers are failing, though it is unknown if this was due to The Fall even though he wasn't directly affected, only having regained a portion of his original Seraph grace or the extended time he has been disconnected from Heaven due to The Fall. His Seraphim's powers include.
- Angelic Possession: Castiel as a spiritual being, like all angels, he needs to use and possess a human vessel to physically interact while on Earth and as an angel, he requires the vessel's permission (unlike demons they can possess whoever they want without permission).
- Astral Projection: Castiel as an Angel and now Seraph is able to partially project his true form while inside his vessel. His true visage as a Seraph is far more hazardous and far more terrifying to creatures such as humans, demons, and other earthly monsters. He was able to combine this with the use of his white light power even while in a weakened state to force the King of Hell Crowley to retreat.
- Astral Perception/Senses: Castiel posses the power of immediately discovering a person's identity or their prior medical status by simply smelling their remains, regardless of the condition of said remains. He can even see things and beings that are naturally invisible, and can easily detect and sense any type of supernatural energy. He is also capable of speaking to and understanding animals, as well as listen in on radio frequencies. He saw the true faces of demons from a far enough distance that Dean needed binoculars. Castiel was able to tell that the boys had chosen the bone of Sister Mary Constant just by sniffing it, he was also earlier able to tell that Meg had indeed killed two demons just by sniffing the knife she used, he heard what Sam and Dean were saying from another room. Castiel can also identify genes and hormones in human beings, as he was able to tell a man was gay by looking at him. Castiel was able to perceive Chuck in Donatello while he was speaking to him and the boys in the Bunker.
- Immortality: Castiel as a celestial being possess the endless lifespan and doesn't age over time and is immune to age, toxins, natural death, infections, poisons, illnesses, viruses, and disease. He never tires, and does not need to eat, sleep, drink, or breathe to sustain himself or even his vessel and is unkillable by any means known to human. He has also existed since the birth of the universe and is billions of years old.
- Electromagnetic Interference: By having his finger pulled, Castiel caused all the lights in his room to shatter.
- Intangibility: As an Angel/Seraphim a spiritual being, Castiel is able to phase his vessel through solid matter, exemplified when he tested if Sam's soul was present without leaving any physical effects.
- Invisibility: Castiel is able to become invisible to humans by hiding in the Veil. He used this power to spy on Dean living a normal life and again when trying to see how much Dean, Sam, and Bobby have learned about him and his alliance with Crowley.
- Telekinesis: Castiel posses the power to move objects and even people with his mind, imparting kinetic energy on matter with his mind. As a Seraph his telekinesis is much stronger than when he was an angel, as he could even fling a Leviathan against a tree, a noteworthy feat due to Leviathan's being resistant to the majority of angelic powers.
