Heroine Overview

Save it for the High Priest, honey. You're gonna need it.
~ Chel

Chel is the deuteragonist of DreamWorks' 3rd full-length animated feature film The Road to El Dorado.

She is a beautiful young native from El Dorado who discovers Tulio and Miguel's con artistry, but decides to play along with them. In exchange, she will return to Spain with them and get some of the gold. She falls in love with Tulio, who becomes her love interest.

She was voiced by Rosie Perez.

Personality

Chel is cunning and clever: She sneaks around, trying to gather information on the two visitors, and even though she discovers that Tulio and Miguel are not gods, she keeps their secret, hoping to use them and their riches to fund her own escape; her perception reinforced as she was the first of El Dorado to realize the fact of their humanity. She's also very adventurous and prefers to do things without any set plan in mind, hence her original theft of a gold relic to pay for travel beyond the borders of her peaceful home.

Upon finding someone she is attracted to, she quickly advances a connection, as she deconstructed Tulio's logic that he personally made to deter either of the men from pursuing Chel, which she achieved with cunning and seduction -with the efficacy of those traits proven as she swiftly engaged with Tulio despite him being the more cautious and rational member of the Spanish duo, Initially it seemed like a whim or an angle to divide and conquer the con artists, but she shortly felt genuine attachment and affection for Tulio and Miguel both (although, only romantic with Tulio).

At the end of the movie, while Tulio and Miguel worry that they won't have a map or a plan to help them figure out their next adventure, Chel reassures them and tells them that it's more interesting that way.

Eventually she grows to care for the two con men and values them for who they are and not what she can get out of them. Her caring side also comes out when she is around children and animals.

Physical Appearance

Chel is a young and beautiful indigenous woman of Colombian origin. She has brown skin, brown eyes, full coral pink lips and long, straight thigh-length black hair with flat bangs and sideburns that go partially down her ears. She also has a non-prominent nose, and her most distinctive feature is her well-pronounced hourglass figure - having rather voluptuous hips and thick thighs.

Chel's attire consists of an off-white tube top with a thin red stripe below the thick pink stripe, along with a matching off-white loincloth reaching down to her shins and turquoise bracelets on both her wrists. She also donned a set of large diamond-shaped earrings the same color as her bracelets - though at times, she replaces them with golden earrings with small turquoise diamond shapes on the center. She is also often barefoot.

Film Role

She first runs in to Tulio and Miguel when she has stolen some treasure from the temple and is running away from some guards. Tulio and Miguel then save her from being punished. She then makes a deal with them (she helps them maintain their scam and they let her come back to Spain with them). Over the course of the movie Tulio becomes attracted to Chel and they become a couple.

When Tulio and Miguel are ready to leave Tzekel-Kan leads invaders to the city and Chel helps stop them. She then rides off with Tulio and Miguel back to Spain.
