Biography
The Black Phone (2022)
In 1978, Finney Blake is introduced as a reserved and timid 13-year-old boy with a rough life. He tends to not stick up for himself, leading to vicious bullying by classmates looking to take advantage. Unfortunately, things are not much better at home; his father is an abusive alcoholic presumably due to his wife's suicide and frequently takes out his anger by beating his two children. Finn walks on eggshells at home and school, never advocating for himself or possessing any sort of confidence to stand up to his adversaries. He looks up to people like his sister Gwen, who helps defend him from his bullies, and his friend and classmate Robin, who exudes fearlessness in schoolyard fights.
While walking home from school one day, Finn is abducted. His kidnapper is the infamous Grabber, a local serial killer that has been stalking the area and the culprit behind his friend Robin's and acquaintance Bruce Yamada's disappearances. Locked in his soundproof basement, Finn uses a phone to communicate with the Grabber's deceased victims, who insist on making sure Finn escapes alive. They help him by giving him tips on what they did during their time in the basement, such as breaking a hole in the wall that leads to a freezer, using a wire as a weapon, digging a hole, and unlocking a padlock on the back door of the house. Simultaneously, Gwen searches for him through the use of her prophetic dreams.
After attempting to escape once and getting caught, the Grabber then prepares to kill Finn. Using the items he received from the other children and motivated by a powerful pep-talk from Robin, Finn easily overpowers the Grabber, tricking him into falling through the hole and bludgeoning him with the phone, finally strangling the killer with the phone cord.
Finn then escapes into the neighborhood where he is met with Gwen and the police in tow. The officers find the killer's body, along with the bodies of the other five deceased children buried across the street. Finn reunites with his sister and father, who apologizes to both children for his abuse of them. At school, Finn has gained confidence. He is finally left alone by his trio of bullies and is now willing to speak with his crush, who admires him for his bravery.

Powers & Skills
Powers
- Mediumship via; (ability to hear the phone): Like his sibling, Finn received supernatural abilities from their mother, specifically the skill of connecting with deceased souls (mediumship). Blake demonstrates this talent when he perceives the black phone ringing while the Grabber abducts him into the soundproof cellar, indicating to him that the phone hasn't functioned for years. As the young man responds to the calls, he converses with past victims who experienced captivity and shares their histories with Finn, including assistance.
- Spiritual Interaction: Blake has a special skill that allows him to connect with non-physical beings in the real world. For instance, he could defeat the Grabber's soul after getting help from his sister. Together, he managed to grab him by the neck and slam his face repeatedly against the frozen lake until he tossed his body into it, allowing the ghost boys to take hold of him.
Skills
- Strategist: After being abducted by the Grabber, the boy heeds the guidance of those who came before him, devising a plan to confront his captor face to face. He crafts a snare in the basement by excavating a hole in the floor and lays a metal grate from the window inside before covering it with a mattress to hide its presence. He then fastens a screw-in circular eye hook to the side, where he secures a rope. The following day, the Grabber descends into the basement wielding an axe and accompanied by his pit bull, closing in on Finn, ready to strike until he narrowly escapes to the edge of the trap. As the menacing figure advances, he becomes ensnared by the rope Blake had pulled, tumbling into the hole and injuring his foot on the metal grate. The young boy then strikes him fatally and throws a piece of meat to distract the dog, enabling him to ascend the stairs and exit outdoors.
- Skilled Combatant: Throughout the movie, it is shown that Blake is not very good at fighting, having been picked on and attacked many times. Before he was taken, he was the sixth person to be targeted, and during his abduction, he tried to defend himself by using a knife to cut the Grabber's arm, but it did not work. However, with the help of his ability to connect with spirits, one of his dead friends teaches him how to fight using close combat skills. He learns to use a phone as a weapon by filling it with dirt to make it heavier and more damaging. As Finn practices his friend's fighting position, he learns to lean back a bit, then step forward, then back again, before striking hard at his enemies. This strategy proves effective after the Grabber falls for the teenager's trap, allowing Finn to use the technique he was taught to overpower him. Finn then strangles the Grabber with the phone cord, ultimately killing him. In second film, four years after going through the trauma of being held captive, Blake has become a skilled fighter. When a new kid insulted him, Blake lifted him up and left his face bloodied from the punches he dealt. His fighting style is unique enough to battle against the Grabber who is now a ghost—making his presence invisible to regular human eyes—but thanks to his medium abilities, Blake was still able to escape the Grabber's chokehold. He kicked him back and was soon caught by his sister. She called for ghost boys in her dreams to help cut the Grabber's leg. Then Finney grabbed the killer by the neck and slammed his face on the icy lake until he was finally thrown into the water, defeating him once and for all.
- Intelligence: Finney Blake is a smart middle school student who said he didn’t need a partner for his science project and could manage it by himself, even before Donna decided to team up with him. However, his smarts became important when he was captured. Once he discovered that the basement was soundproof, he examined the place for places to dig and realized that if he left the dirt out, it would raise suspicion with his kidnapper. So, he disposed of the dirt in the toilet, completely covering up the evidence.
- Determination: Throughout the movie, Finn exhibited a clear tendency to shy away from dire situations, opting to evade, conceal himself, or flee rather than tackle them head-on. Nevertheless, during his captivity under the Grabber, he made several attempts to devise an escape plan, guided by the spirits of deceased victims who reached out to him through the phone, revealing the wicked techniques of the antagonist and pushing Finn to the brink of desperation for freedom until he was ultimately caught outside, beaten senseless, and returned to confinement. Almost feeling defeated as he witnessed Max's demise, he took to heart the encouragement from Robin, a prior victim and friend, who reminded him that he had always been a fighter, persistently striving to turn his efforts into a path for vengeance against the captor when the moment presented itself. Armed with fresh resolve, the young teen crafted a scheme to outsmart his captor, employing his intellect, fighting abilities, and courage, ultimately leading to the successful defeat of his tormentor, avenging the fallen, and liberating himself to reunite with his family. His triumph garnered attention across the community, instilling fear in the bullies at school and bolstering his confidence, allowing him to become more sociable.
