| ~ Freja |
Freja Skov is a major character in the Overwatch franchise. She is a Danish specialist who used to serve a member of Overwatch, acting as an elite search-and-rescue operative. She later turned to bounty hunting after the organization had disbanded, losing faith in their ideals as a whole.
At one point, she was hired by Talon member Maximilien to track down former Overwatch soldier Emre, who had gone missing since Overwatch's disbandment. When she discovered him and learned of his condition, she opted to continue working with Talon, if only to stay close by Emre's side and help him retain his humanity.
She is voiced by Olivia Le Anderson.
Personality
Freja is depicted as a determined and highly skilled tracker-turned-bounty-hunter with a hardened, cynical personality following the collapse of Overwatch. Once idealistically dedicated to saving lives as a dedicated empathetic search-and-rescue agent under Ana Amari, her experience with Overwatch's betrayal and disbandment left her disillusioned and colder, thus turning her into a professional mercenary motivated by results and finding targets. She holds a "always delivers" mindset, working for high-paying, often dangerous clients like Maximilien. Despite her mercenary nature, Freja retains remnants of her former empathy.
Story
Early Life
Freja lived with her mother, a diplomat, in Copenhagen when the Omnic Crisis began. Freja's mother was a diplomat, and after the beginning of the war, she quickly and efficiently liaised with the Danish Armed Forces and other military/civil branches. Freja was alongside her mother during the war's duration, and learnt that keeping people safe came down to a level head and a focused eye. However, Freja wanted to be on the ground, in the thick of the action, rather than conduct rescues from the comfort of a safehouse.
Long after the war, Freja studied criminology. Doing so gave her access to the latest tech, showed her how to stop and track threats before they began. She joined a local search and rescue team which offered her "hands on education." In so doing, she developed the expertise to find anyone in any place. She discovered the rush of seeing a job through to its end. Of doing something that mattered. Still, she remained humble as she rose through the ranks: it was to clear to anyone that success in her work was all the fulfillment she needed.
After graduating from university, Freja briefly enlisted in the Danish Armed Forces, but she was singled out for recruitment by Overwatch. In truth, Freja had already had her eye on joining the organization, and when approached by Ana Amari, gladly accepted.
Overwatch
Freja was assigned to Overwatch's then-burgeoning Search and Rescue division. She dedicated her life to Overwatch and its mission of global peace. While SAR didn't have the same cachet as Overwatch's strike team, this didn't bother Freja, as she preferred to stay behind the scenes. With the agency’s resources, there was no one Freja couldn’t find, no victim beyond her reach. At some point, Freja was stationed at Watchpoint: Gibraltar. In one operation, she and her SAR team worked with the Overwatch strike team. They successfully conducted a hostage rescue operation. After the op, she was congratulated by strike team member Emre Sarioglu.
Freja's excellence was unmatched, with some dubbing her the best tracker in the world. Still, she remained humble as she rose through the ranks: it was clear to anyone that success in her work was all the fulfillment she needed. In time, various members of the strike team such as Reinhardt Wilhelm, Angela Ziegler, and Emre Sarioglu came to request Freja by name for their operations. But despite her many triumphs, her few failures ate away at her conscience. Where others saw near-perfection, she saw inadequacies, and she worked tirelessly—even obsessively—to correct them.
After Sarioglou departed, Freja was made head of Overwatch's Search and Rescue branch. Freja kept working, but anti-Overwatch sentiment continued to grow. Freja kept her head down—there were still people who needed Overwatch, but she was so focused on her work, she couldn't see how Overwatch was collapsing from the inside until the organization's headquarters was destroyed. In the months that followed, with the IJC hearings, Overwatch's record with search-and-rescue, Ecopoint, and medical programs went unconsidered. In Freja's view, Overwatch had mostly done everything right, but to the IJC, it didn't matter.
As a Bounty Hunter
After Overwatch was disbanded, Freja found herself adrift and purposeless. Out of work, Freja made numerous applications to Danish organizations, including the Danish Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defense, and to the Danish Rescue Coordination Center. All of her applications were denied. Try as she might, it seemed no one was willing to take on an ex-Overwatch agent so soon after the organization—and its reputation—fell to pieces. Without her work, her sense of self-worth vanished overnight. She shut out the world, drifting directionless through life.
One night, she noticed a bounty board in a city posted by its local police department. Freja realized that even if her time as a search and rescue operative was over, she could be of use in this new world.
What began with small jobs became a full-time compulsion, driving Freja to more covert and dangerous operations. To protect herself in dealings with dubious clientele, she adopted a new moniker: "Gefn." She knew that "Freja" carried too much baggage as an ex-Overwatch member. At first, "Gefn" was no different a person than "Freja," in that she only took the kinds of jobs she would have as an Overwatch member—saving innocents and catching criminals. But with every job she took, she came to realize that not every "search" was a "rescue." While Freja initially tried to stick to rescue missions, the morality of her work soon became irrelevant. All that mattered was the chase. As her targets’ notoriety grew, so too did her fee. In time, she became one of the most infamous bounty hunters in the criminal underground.
As a bounty hunter, Freja attracted a different kind of clientele, one that showed her the true value of her skills. On the dark web, Freja sought out difficult targets, bounties no one else could deliver. The price mattered less than the challenge, and the rush Freja had once felt in SAR returned, now accompanied by the thrill of the hunt. For her, it was a second chance to take everything she knew and do something with it. As a bounty hunter, she always worked alone.
Among her many jobs, one anonymous benefactor caught her attention—both on account of the strange chases they sent her on and the exorbitant pay. The jobs felt too perfect, almost manufactured, but Freja was up to the challenge. She completed several bounties for this "M4RQU1S," but when payment never arrived, she decided to meet him face-to-face.
The Hunt Begins
After tracking him down, Freja realized that "M4RQU15" was Maximilien—de facto kingpin of Monte Carlo, and a financier for Talon. As recompense for the payment she never received, she took Maximilien's cargo as her own.
Freja swiftly defeats Maximilien's guards with her agility and marksmanship.
Three bounties were posted on three targets—Damian Barboza, Machete Betty, and Sahil Bhediya. She captured them and deposited them in a dock area for Maximilien and his guards to find. They did just that, and Freja approached from the shadows, stating that the targets were bounties, not gifts, and that she had indeed been the one to pilfer Maximilien's cargo, despite him feigning ignorance on the lack of payment for the prior jobs. Maximilien asked Freja to explain how she was able to capture the bounties, but she refused to give details. Maximilien decided a demonstration was in order, which resulted in his guards firing on Freja. Freja evaded and incapacitated them, and for good measure, destroyed Maximilien's car as well.
Maximilien applauded Freja's "demonstration" and paid her for the bounties, also allowing her to keep the cargo as a "bonus." Freja realized that the entire sequence of events had been orchestrated by Maximilien. That he'd wanted her to come here, tonight, and to engage in a firefight as well. He told her that he wanted to make sure she was up for the job he had planned. A job that no-one else had been able to solve for him. Freja initially refused, as she had other bounties to collect, but Maximilien revealed that he knew her real name, and gave her information on her next bounty—Emre Sarioglu.Freja hadn't thought about him for years, but Max's offer brought back memories of the life she'd never truly left behind.
Freja told Maximilien that he should have led with this offer, and to leave Sarioglu to her.
