Officer Knight is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Grace The Cat) of Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man franchise.
He is a tough and loyal police officer that is considered "The World's Greatest Cop", however he is shown to be mildly mischevious. As of a terrible bomb incident, the only hope for him and his pet dog, Greg, to survive is to become one being, Dog Man.
In the musical, he was portrayed by Brian Owen and is voiced by Peter Hastings in the 2025 DreamWorks Animation film adaptation, both of which portrayed Dog Man and Greg the Dog in their respective adaptations of the book series.
Biography
Book
Past
Sometime in his young adult years, Knight would meet Greg the Dog, who he would later adopt. The two would then become police officers and work for Chief Clarence Bailey, Greg's former owner.
Dog Man
Knight first introduced in the first book in the series.
When Chief had collected a new couch, the troublesome cop and his dog decided to nap on it before anyone else, despite the fact that Chief was supposed to be the first one. Chief angrily yells at them to get up, waking them up with a start. Then, Chief tells them that they're the worst cops ever and that they should get out of his sight.
With regret, Knight and Greg walk away, unbeknownst to Petey the Cat and his butler spying on them. Then, Petey tells his concerned butler that Knight is dumb but strong and Greg is smart but weak. However, they could still work together, which concerns Petey enough to make a bomb that would blow them up.
When Knight and Greg hear about the bomb, they rush to defuse it. However, due to Knight's stupidity, he cuts the green wire instead of the red, blowing them up. Somehow, doctors heard and rushed to get them to the hospital, where the nurse Genie S. Lady creates the idea to sew the undying head of Greg onto the undying body of Knight, officially creating Dog Man.
Movie
In the film, Officer Knight lived with Greg the Dog and his girlfriend, Alice. The three had a loving life together, having many sweet and happy memories as Dog Man recalls.
In the film, Officer Knight and Greg the Dog are seen within their police car, with Officer Knight recklessly driving said car. After abruptly stopping at a stop light, Officer Knight yells out for Petey, the world's most evilest cat, who comes out of a nearby sewer in a car. He laughs at the two police officers before driving further and further away from them, forcing Officer Knight and Greg the Dog to chase Petey up to an inclined ramp. Petey drives up and jumps off the ramp with his car before letting it fly, making Officer Knight and Greg have to go up the ramp.
While they are falling, Greg puts up a parachute to make their fall easier, and they land at the edge of an abandoned warehouse, where they had to jump out the car before it fell off... landing on the police chief's car, who had just drove there.
Petey, still in his car, starts flying farther away from the cops, saying that he "wouldn't have to deal with the two of them anymore". Wondering what was going on, Officer Knight turns around to find a newly ignited bomb. Officer Knight asks Chief if he could get everyone within the warehouse out, even though there was no one inside.
Meanwhile, Officer Knight and Greg came up to the bomb, as Officer Knight attempts to figure out which wire to cut, and almost cuts the red wire if it weren't for Greg's growling that he took as green, and he cut the green wire.
The two were rushed to the hospital, where, like in the books, Nurse Lady would bring the idea to sew the undying head of Greg onto the undying body of Officer Knight, officially creating a "supa cop", Dog Man.
Trivia
- According to later recaps of the books, it is said that Knight and Greg where the world's greatest cops.
- While it's revealed Greg the Dog was Chief's pet in Dog Man: Big Jim Begins, it wouldn't really make sense why that's the case as Greg was Officer Knight's pet in the present and Chief is shown to dislike them both.
