Corporal Marcus Howard is a supporting character in the 2017 video game Call of Duty: WWII, and a mentioned character in the 2021 video game, Call of Duty: Vanguard. He is an U.S. Army officer during the Second World War, who was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division to replace the unit's dead engineer and radio operator.

He was voiced and mo-capped by Russell Richardson, who also voiced Cormack in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Jefferson Davis in the Marvel's Spider-Man series, Lewis Howard in Call of Duty: Vanguard, and portrayed William Lerner in Confidential Informant.

Biography

Background

Marcus Howard was born around the 1900s in Alabama to unnamed parents, and is the brother to Lewis Howard. Marcus and Lewis spent their youth going fishing with their grandfather, and Lewis would go on to become a shrimp fisherman. During the height of the Second World War, Marcus and Lewis would join the war effort by becoming members of the United States Army to stop the Axis Powers. Though the two joined the same military branch, they would separate as Marcus served over in Europe, as Lewis served over in the Pacific theater with the 93rd Infantry Division. Stationed in Europe, Marcus became a member of an African-American regiment was the units engineer and radio operator.

Call of Duty: WWII

In 1944, Howard and his unit were tasked with capturing Hill 493 at Hürtgen Hill, and despite the many causalities, succeeded in their mission. When the 1st Infantry Division lost their engineer during the mission at the hill, Howard was assigned to the unit under Technical Sergeant William Pierson's squad around December. Marcus met the squad before the battle of the Bulge started, and worked on fixing a broken radio while being protected by the team. After fixing the radio, Corporal Ronald "Red" Daniels called in air support to deal with enemy tanks. Afterward, Howard worked with Daniels' unit to fight against the Nazi forces until Pierson called in close air support to destroy the last of the tanks. Surviving the battle, Howard went to Daniels and asked him how long had Pierson been out of his mind.

Two days after, Howard participated in the 1st Infantry's operation on ambushing a German Air Force base, and was presumably informed of Robert Zussmans' capture and Daniels being discharged for insubordination. In 1945, Howard worked with Daniels and his team to capture the Ludendorff bridge at Remagen. After the Nazis surrendered, Howard received an apology from Frank Aiello, who had previously held his prejudice against the corporal. Accepting Aiello's apology, Howard continued to escort the Nazi prisoners who had surrendered as Daniels and the unit went to rescue Zussman.

Call of Duty: Vanguard

In Call of Duty: Vanguard, Marcus is mentioned by Lewis, who states to his company that he has a brother fighting in Europe, and that their mother doesn't want both of her children being killed by the Germans and Japanese. Lewis was thought to have been killed by the Imperial Japanese Army while trying to reclaim the island of Bougainville for the 23rd Infantry Division, but somehow managed to survive and was later recruited into Task Force Trident by SOE Captain Carver Butcher.

Marcus' voice actor, Russell Richardson, has voiced other characters in the franchise, such as Cormack in Advanced Warfare, and Lewis Howard in Vanguard.
- Originally, Marcus' surname was "Cormack", a possible reference to the actor's previous character in Advanced Warfare.
He appears as a major in the headquarters of multiplayer, where he gives the players special orders to receive awards in return.
