Happy Day of the Departed, Master.
~ Morro redeeming himself in "Day of the Departed".
Sometimes I feel the pull to do just that, but I told you, I was a ninja, and I've decided to it's my duty to protect everyone who passes through here, even if they happen to still be alive.
~ Morro to Arin in The Spectral Lands.

Morro is a major character in the Ninjago: Master of Spinjitzu and a supporting character in it's sequel series, Ninjago: Dragons Rising.

He is voiced by Andrew Francis who is currently voicing Cole from the same series after Kirby Morrow's passing, who also voices Shining Armor from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Tatsuma Sakamoto from Gintama°, and Max Mcgrath from Max Steel, Linden and Prince Kieran in Barbie series, and MegaMan.EXE from Mega Man NT Warriors, Vert Wheeler in Hot Wheels: Acceleracers, Gill Nexdor in Johnny Test, Lin Chung in Hero 108, Ty Rux in Dinotrux, as well as Jaller in Bionicle.

Appearance

As a young boy, Morro had longer black hair with a green streak on the right side. His eyebrows were also black, divided into two streaks at their ends. When Master Wu first found him, Morro was dressed in ragged beggar clothes, reflecting his difficult life on the streets. After Wu took him in, Morro was given a proper gi, which was a simple sand green outfit with golden and dark green details and darker pants. As a ghost of the Cursed Realm, Morro's whole body became transparent and green. His gi was dark green and more tattered, with sand green sleeves and a sand green belt. The symbol of the dragon was visible on his chest, and his arms and face glowed with a pale green hue. His eyes stayed black with dark green markings around them giving him a ghostly appearance.

When possessing Lloyd, Morro turned Lloyd's hair to black, his skin to sand green and also changed his outfit to look more like a ghost. He also kept his dark green markings around Lloyd's eyes

After the Merge, Morro acquired a slightly different look that blended his ghostly features with more solid details. He kept his black hair but without the green streak. His outfit was now more defined, featuring a similar dark green gi with sand green cloth and a light green belt. He also kept the symbol of the dragon on his chest but with slightly different design. His hands and face still had a ghostly green tint, though his form looked more stable compared to his original appearance. The biggest change, however, was that his eyes turned glowing bright green instead of black, while still keeping dark green markings around them.

Personality

In his past, he was free spirited and was shown to be rather patient up until Master Wu tested him. He is also seen to be jealous as well, as noted by his behavior while dueling Lloyd in the Museum, and his disgust and rage in confronting the one who attained his spurned, youthful dream of becoming the Green Ninja.

He also was very narrow-minded, focused, and determined. However, despite his gifts in strategy, his narrow-mindedness and inability to let go of anything was likely his greatest personal flaw. He was determined to prove destiny wrong after he was discovered to not be the Green Ninja. With his aggrandized sense of identity taken, Morro had taken out his disappointment in a state of denial and rage.

In his youth, he had a very close teacher-student relationship with Master Wu, which, while rather healthy and positive for them in the beginning, quickly took a nosedive after the revelation that Morro was not destined to be the Green Ninja, which caused Morro to become bitter and resentful, and caused him to abandon Wu and the Monastery. This also showcased Morro's determined and ambitious side, as well his inability to cope with disappointment. Likewise, this seemingly caused him to later attempt to emulate Lloyd, the true Green Ninja, by frequently using his Elemental Dragon, appointing Weapon Masters that filled identical roles to the four Ninja, and dressing in green clothing.

He was also shown to be somewhat unstable in his inability to face failure. His failed dreams in his past life and attempts to live them out as a ghost, show that his determination was limitless, although it had clearly driven him hopelessly insane. Likewise, Morro's massive insecurities and inner fears had left him incapable of abandoning his pursuit to be the Green Ninja, and thus had prevented him from summoning his own Elemental Dragon as a result.

He was also shown to be manipulative, trying to buy time by telling Lloyd that his father still lives on in the Cursed Realm, and that destroying the Realm Crystal would cost him his chance of saving his father. However, Morro used this information merely to stall until the Preeminent could drag Lloyd into the Cursed Realm herself. Morro was also pathologically incapable of letting go of a grudge. This is seen in his constant mocking of Lloyd and his references to his shattered dreams of becoming the Green Ninja. He blamed Wu and fate for this, and it was ultimately what led him to his demise in the Caves of Despair.

Morro did show his regret for his actions at the end of "Curseworld, Part II." When Master Wu tried to save him from being pulled into the water by the Preeminent, he realizes his own mistakes and decided to take death as his punishment, while giving the Realm Crystal to Master Wu, parting with his last words, "You can only save those who want to be saved . . . goodbye, Sensei."

Once he was resurrected by Yang, he further showed he had learned his lesson in "Day of the Departed," where instead of going off to destroy one of his old enemies like his fellow villains, he warned Master Wu of Yang's plans. When he met the Ninja again, he showed no ill will and was amused by their hostility but warned them of the threat. After this, he left his former master on good terms before he returned to the museum and went back to the Departed Realm on his own will, with his last words to Sensei Wu, “ Happy Day of the Departed, Master”.

Morro’s finally at peace with his fate, and no longer the vengeful spirit he had become.

After the Merge and the creation of the Spectral Lands, Morro became a Departed Soul as he decided not to move on to the afterlife, but instead to guide other souls of the departed through the Spectral Lands and protect them from Soul Suckers. He decided that way because of his biggest regret, betraying Master Wu, and started helping people honoring his Master's teachings about defending those who could not defend themselves.

History

Past

Morro was the previous Elemental Master of Wind, who believed he was destined to be the Green Ninja. Found by Master Wu when he was a child and trained as his master's first student, he became determined to prove destiny wrong after the Golden Weapons didn't choose him as the fabled savior. After leaving Wu in search of his destiny, Morro perished in the Caves of Despair while searching for the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master and his spirit was banished to the Cursed Realm, as a result of previous actions.

Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu

At the end of the Second Serpentine War, Morro had escaped from his imprisonment when Garmadon was banished to the Cursed Realm. Intending to find the Realm Crystal hidden in the First Spinjitzu Master's tomb, Morro possessed Lloyd Garmadon, as only a Spinjitzu Master could locate the tomb. He then embarked on a quest, during which he used the Allied Armor of Azure to conjure his allies from the Cursed Realm at will.

After a long journey, Morro abandoned Lloyd’s body and obtained the Crystal, and freed his master in an effort to curse the Sixteen Realms. With The Preeminent in Ninjago, Morro fought Lloyd in a battle that traversed through various realms. When Nya unlocked her True Potential and incapacitated the beast, Morro was seized by one of its tentacles. Desperately, Wu attempted to save him, but Morro ultimately realized that he was beyond saving, prompting him to give Wu the Crystal before letting go of his hand, and falling into the sea and dissolving. Months after his death, a statue of Morro was placed in the Ninjago Museum of History as part of the new Hall of Villainy exhibit. When Cole (lured by Yang) accidentally opened the Departed Realm using the Yin Blade, Morro's spirit escaped the realm and possessed the statue in the museum, resurrecting him once more. Upon hearing Yang's plan to have the other revived villains exact vengeance on their arch enemies, Morro set off to find Wu but rather than fight him, he instead told him of what was happening. Morro and Wu reunited with the Ninja in the city, with the Ninja heading for Yang's Temple while Morro's spirit peacefully returned to the Departed Realm after making amends with his master.

Prior to Dragons Rising

After The Merge, the Cursed Realm and the Departed Realm became one—the Spectral Lands. While most Departed souls were able to move on into new phases of existence, Morro felt that he still had to atone for his past with Master Wu. Believing that he had to honor Wu's teachings about protecting those who cannot protect themselves, Morro became a protector for all who passed through the Spectral Lands, living or dead.

Dragons Rising

Season 3

Morro was fighting a group of Soul Suckers when he encountered Arin in the Spectral Lands. Confused about Arin's arrival due to the lack of living things in the Spectral Lands, Morro asked him for specific details. When Arin revealed his worry for his teacher, Ras, potentially dying from illness, Morro bonded with Arin, reminiscing on his time with his own master too. Morro guided Arin to the Well of the Lost to claim a healing elixir to save Ras. Then, the two continued to fight Soul Suckers as they approached Ras.

After Arin healed Ras, Morro asked Arin to tell his master, Wu, about his teachings being right. Calming Arin's surprise about Wu, because the former thought he was dead, Morro corrected him, saying that Wu had to be alive. Otherwise, Morro would have encountered Wu's Departed soul in the Spectral Lands. Morro left Arin to tend to Ras, and then returned to fight more Soul Suckers.

Later, in the Spectral Lands, Morro is checking on the Well of the Lost when a soul enters the lands. Morro tries to tell them that they died, only for the soul to reveal itself as Thunderfang. Morro is shocked and remarks at the dragon's size, but when four Soul Suckers came running towards him, Morro readies himself to protect Thunderfang, though the latter says he handle himself and proceeds absorbs the Soul Suckers. Morro was shocked and claims that it's impossible. Thunderfang declares that in the afterlife anything is possible before absorbing Morro too.

After Thunderfang's eventual defeat, Morro was released and returned to his duty to protect the Spectral Lands, before being joined by Egalt.

Legacy

Though redeemed, Morro remained an example of an adversary from the ninja's past.

Jay used his possession of Lloyd as an example of the bad things that happened when the team split up.

Sometime after his demise, a statue of Morro was placed in the Ninjago Museum of History's Hall of Villainy exhibit.

Morro appeared during a hallucination of Wu's, hatching out of a Vermillion egg clad in Vermillion armor and reminding Wu that he failed to prevent Morro from being consumed by arrogance.

Lloyd mentioned Morro when naming some of Ninjago's greatest villains, and Jay used Morro as an example of the villains that perished because they released a great evil.

When the ninja were looking at the Ninjago history mural in the reconstructed Monastery of Spinjitzu, Nya noted a few of the ninja's former enemies who were depicted in the paintings, one of whom was Morro.

Whilst Renzo and Kenzo explain the effects of Two Moon Tea to Garmadon, saying that the tea can the temporarily enhance the power of beings from other realms, Morro in possession of Lloyd's body is visualized as an example for ghosts.

Dragons Rising

Prior to the Merge, Euphrasia was a Writer of Destiny, until the Merge occurred, bringing the Cloud Kingdom, among the many realms, into Ninjago.

Not long after, because of the Merge, she gained the Elemental Power of Wind which previously belonged to Morro, and became the new elemental master of Wind.

Fearing exile, she kept them hidden until Lloyd met her, he told her that Lloyd knew the previous master of Wind, and that he already likes her more than Morro, since that he has still not gotten over the time Morro possessed him back in "Winds of Change".

Possession (2017 Museum gallery)

Long ago, Morro, the Master of Wind, was Master Wu’s first pupil. He had great talent and Wu believed he was on the path to becoming the Green Ninja. However, at the crucial moment, the Golden Weapons of Spinjitzu did not react to him (as they would one day for Lloyd). Wu attempted to convince Morro to give up on his quest, but the embittered young man refused. Morro went off on his own in search of the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master and perished in the Caves of Despair (it’s believed he may have been killed by the explosive geysers present in the caves). For reasons that remain a mystery, he was banished to the Cursed Realm. Morro later escaped, possessed Lloyd’s body and led a ghostly legion into battle in the NINJAGO world. In the end, the Preeminent dragged Morro beneath the water and his ghostly form was destroyed.

Day of the Departed

Denied the chance to be the Green Ninja, Morro stormed from Wu’s dojo intent on gaining the same power by other means. He went in search of the Tomb of the First Spinjitzu Master, believing that the resting place of the creator of the NINJAGO world would give him control of the four Golden Weapons. His travels took him to the Caves of Despair, after misreading “cave in the deep” on an ancient scroll in the Library of Domu. There he was trapped and killed by a kethanol geyser.

Character Encyclopedia New Edition

Back from the Cursed Realm as a ghost, Morro is set on revenge against Wu and the ninja. Driven by jealously, Morro uses his cunning and mastery of his element, the wind, to possess Lloyd and attack the other ninja. His mission is to bring evil to Ninjago Island once again.

Perfect Student

Morro was Master Wu's first student. He soon mastered the martial arts and Wu thought he might be the prophesied Green Ninja. When it became clear that he wasn't, Morro became obsessed with proving Wu wrong.

Quote

Masters can be tough sometimes. I had a... complicated relationship with mine, and I betrayed him, my biggest regret. That's why I stay here to help people. My master was wise. He taught me to defend those who cannot defend themselves, so I honor his teachings to make up for my mistakes.
~ Morro to Arin, telling him about his past.
