The Maximals are the main protagonists of Transformers: Beast Wars. They are direct descendants of the Autobots, heroic faction who had fought hundreds of years ago against the Decepticons, who were the ancestors of their archenemies; the Predacons. However, some continuity such as the live action had alternate origins, and didn't have any connection to an Autobots as their ancestors.
Like their ancestors, the Maximals had to fight their rival race of robots to restore peace to the galaxy. A later generation of Maximals would be featured in the sequel series Beast Machines, Beast Wars II, and Beast Wars Neo. A villainous version of the Maximals feature in IDW comics as ancient Transformers that were originally the servants of the Liege Maximo and Onyx Prime. A version of the Maximals similar to their Beast Era counterparts appear in War for Cybertron's third and final arc, Kingdom. The Maximals appear in the live action reboot movie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

Trivia
- The only Maximals that remained alive the end of the Beast Era are Cheetor, Rattrap, Silverbolt, Blackarachnia, Nightscream and Botanica.
- Of these characters, Cheetor and Rattrap are the only original Maximals from the beginning of the Beast Era to survive all the way through in the end. As such, they each have the last lines of the series.
- Several characters who were originally Maximals feature in different incarnations of the franchise, such as Transformers Animated, Cyberverse, and the Prime Wars Trilogy, albeit distinct from being Maximals.
- In IDW's comics, the inhabitants of the Cybertronian colony world Eukaris is made up of characters who were originally Maximals, sich as Cheetor, Dinobot, Tigatron, and Airazor.
- Rattrap, Dinobot, Tigatron, Silverbolt, and Blackarchnia are one of few Maximals whom never appeared in the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts film, as Airazor declared herself being the last survivor Maximal. It can be concluded they are presumably killed by Scourge and the Terrorcons off-screen, prior events of the movie.
- Rhinox, Tigatron, Airazor, Tigerhawk, Nightscream, Botanica, and Noble are the only Maximal that doesn't have a TransMetal evolution forms.
- Nightscream, Botanica, and Noble are the only Maximals which has been shown already in their Techno Organic forms.
- Unlike in the original Beast Wars continuity, Tigatron and Airazor did not died in the War For Cybertron Trilogy. However, just like in original continuity, the two developed a romantic relationship.
