Master Mutaito is the posthumous overarching protagonist of the King Piccolo and Piccolo Jr. sagas in Dragon Ball and a flashback minor character in Dragon Ball Super, as well as a posthumous character in the Dragon Ball franchise as a whole. He is regarded as one of the greatest martial artists of all time and the first rescuer of the Earth, having sealed King Piccolo 300 years ago at the expense of his own life. He is Master Roshi's and Master Shen's instructor, and he is the one who taught them the most astounding martial arts talents of all time.
Despite only appearing in flashbacks and in the anime filler episode "The Time Room," he had a significant influence on the series.
Appearance
Master Mutaito is an elderly guy with a chubby figure. He is dressed in a white martial arts gi with the training logo on his chest, a dark blue belt, a black collar, red wristbands, and black kung fu shoes.
Personality
Mutaito is depicted as a disciplined and respectable warrior who cared deeply for his disciples. After he almost killed King Piccolo and his demon spawn, he tried to kill him, but was defeated by him. However, this failure prompted him to train in hopes of finding a way to defeat King Piccolo, and later he eventually succeeded in sacrificing his own life to use the Containment Wave of Evil.
Biography
Background
In Age 461, when his disciples Roshi and Shen were no match for King Piccolo, Master Mutaito created a wave that allows to seal evil beings. He and his disciples then confront King Piccolo, and Mutaito successfully seals him into the rice cooker, causing him to die in the process.
In anime filler, in a way, his background is greatly expanded and changed. Mutaito and his two students confronted King Piccolo when he first attempted to conquer Earth, and suffered severe injuries and the death of his students (Roshi and Shen are some of the survivors).
While his wounds healed, Mutaito was ashamed of having been defeated before the rest of his students, and went to train somewhere alone, hoping to find a way to defeat the demonic tyrant while continuing his slaughter. Years later, when the city was destroyed and the Earth's population was annihilated, he developed a special technique, the Evil Containment Wave , that could seal King Piccolo. is reunited with Master Roshi and Master Shen. They confront him and Mutaito manages to use his new technique to trap the demon king forever, but despite its effective ability the technique causes the death of anyone who uses it. Despite his death, he managed to restore natural order and stop the genocide of all mankind. Centuries later, in Age 753, the electric rice cooker that was being used to seal King Piccolo was discovered by Emperor Pilaf and his crew and managed to be released. He was later killed by Roshi's disciple, Son Goku.

Piccolo Jr. Saga
In the anime filler episode The Time Room, while in the Lookout during the three-year training, Goku travels back in time (via the Lookout's Pendulum Room) to a time before Mutaito fought King Piccolo, and was instructing with the young Master Roshi and Shen, Mutaito then trains with Goku and teaches him the basics of all Ki-based techniques. He also teaches this knowledge to his students Roshi and Shen. This would later be used by him, Goku, and many other characters such as Krillin and Yamcha to develop a technique that has become a signature technique that he, and many others, used frequently in the series and even the first energy wave ever demonstrated.

In the manga, Mutaito briefly appears during a flashback when Goku tells the story of King Piccolo and the Evil Containment Wave.
Techniques and Special Abilities
- Evil Containement Wave: A technique developed by Master Mutaito and used to seal King Piccolo in a rice cooker. Appears as a special move in Dokkan Battle.
- Flight: The ability to fly using wings or special equipment, like jetpacks. Used by Master Mutaito in Dokkan Battle.
- Ki based techniques: He was the first person to mention the word "ki" in the entire franchise. He used it to hit Goku with his fingers, and even used it to cut the entire waterfall in half. This is highly likely given that he was shown using "ki".
Trivia
- Mutaito's hairstyle resembles the wig Master Roshi uses when disguised as Jackie Chun. The disguise was probably designed by Roshi in memory of his master.
- Mr. Lao, a character that only appeared in the anime Dragon Ball Z, has a very similar hairstyle to Mutaito.
