Pencil: Grr! NO! STOP!
Needle: WHAT? I'm in last, I need to catch up!
Pencil: Will you just LISTEN to what my challenge is? I've got a super good reward to go along with it!
Needle: I don't need your help! I can win this for-
Pencil: Yeah, yeah, "win for yourself", we all know. That's never gonna work, Needle.
Needle: Excuse me?!
Pencil: You can't WIN the game if you keep pushing away everyone who wants to help! Why do you even WANT to win for yourself?
Needle: Because! Urgh...! I was always pushed to the side... if I can win this on my own, I won't just be someone ELSE's ally, or someone ELSE's friend. I'll be THE winner!
Pencil: Yeah, but then you're, like, all alone. That's no fun! Like, why do you even think we made the alliance in the first place?
Needle: ..Huh?
Pencil: You can have allies- no, have FRIENDS in the game, y'know?
Needle: ...I don't know.
Pencil: Needle, you're doing fine on your own, but imagine how great it would be to win with friends! Come on! There's nothing wrong with being a LITTLE needy!
Needle: *sigh* I'm so far behind. I think I've lost this one anyway.
Pencil: What? That is the opposite of what I said! Come on, Needle! If you're not gonna do my challenge for your own sake, then do it for mine! I'm owed a redo of that challenge!
Needle: *sigh* Okay. What do you need?
Pencil: I need you to walk around me WITHOUT tagging the Supervan!
Needle: What? That's it?
Pencil: Yup! Technically Book and TB also finished, but they didn't stay for their reward. SO it's all on you!

~ Pecnil confronting Needle in BFDIA 23.
Pencil: Others can clean that mess! I'M NOT LOSING AGAIN, GOLF BALL!

Golf Ball: THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT! Pencil: To you, maybe. You have NO IDEA what it's like to be stuck in a classroom for 6 YEARS!! I TRIED to be a good leader, to be the one to get us out of there, and Roboty was the one to save the day in the end! And now... now everyone I knew and trusted is gone.. and the people I DO know won't even TALK to me! So maybe I WANT to avoid being put up for elimination! Maybe it IS more important to me, BECAUSE I CAN'T GO BACK THERE! I can't... go back there... maybe those failed debuters were right. Maybe changing the past... might save me!

Donut: Pencil! NO!

~ Pencil's breakdown as she vents to Golf Ball on how she believes that winning is more important then saving the universe because she can't go back to a place like the E.X.I.T.
Bye, Four...
~ Pencil to Four, before blasting him off the hotel, and getting revenge on him for imprisoning her in the EXIT for over six years

Pencil is a major character in jacknjellify's Battle for Dream Island web series.

She is, as her name implies, a sapient No. 2 graphite pencil, and one of the many contestants in the show, having been competing in every season save for Elsewhere. Throughout the series, Pencil's character changed over the years, initially beginning as a flawed, but well-meaning individual, was a nice character who cared about her buddies more than anything, but by the time of Battle for BFDI and The Power of Two, Pencil's characterization took a darker move, becoming a more nasty and abusive person.

Pencil is also the leader of an alliance named FreeSmart, which was her alliance that would be broken up when Book and Ice Cube left the alliance in BFB when she started to become more abusive, which ultimately led to her being eliminated an episode later, and imprisoned inside of the EXIT for six years. However, she and the rest of The EXITors would escape, and, thanks to One altering the whiteboard, would join TPOT. Previously, she was competing to win The Power of Two, however, as of “Last One Standing”, she abandoned that in return to go back in time to fix her past with her ex-friends. She is also the best friend of Match and Ruby, the archenemy of Four, Spongy and Book, and the arch-rival of Golf Ball.

She is voiced by the series' co-creator Michael Huang.

Appearance

Pencil appears to be a No. 2 graphite pencil, a type most commonly used for writing and drawing. Her design includes a beige tip where the wood is exposed, followed by a sharp, dark gray point that represents the graphite. Her cylindrical body is divided into three distinct shades of orange, giving her a layered and detailed look. The section near the top of her body is wrapped in a silver metal band, which connects to a standard pink eraser. Altogether, her appearance clearly reflects that of a realistic pencil while still fitting the simplified art style used in the series.

Between her appearances in Battle for Dream Island and Battle for Dream Island Again, Pencil underwent a subtle design change. Her facial features, including her eyes and mouth, were moved slightly closer together. This small adjustment made her expressions more focused and easier to animate in close-up shots. The rest of her appearance remained mostly the same, maintaining her recognizable shape and color scheme while adapting to the evolving style of the show.

Personality

Pencil, along with Match, was one of the first two contestants shown in the very first episode of the series, "Take the Plunge." From the beginning, she was portrayed as a social and outspoken character who often acted like a teenage girl, frequently using slang and abbreviations in her speech. While Match tended to be the more dominant of the two, Pencil was often seen by her side, the two sharing a bond that made them nearly inseparable. Pencil initially came across as friendly and lighthearted, though her personality quickly revealed more layers as the series progressed.

In the early episodes of the original season, Pencil generally maintained a kind demeanor, but this changed by the third episode when she began mocking Bubble for what she claimed was a lack of intelligence. She specifically targeted Bubble’s inability to count to three, which became a running point of tension between them. When Bubble died before reaching the number three during a challenge, Pencil used the moment to reinforce her ridicule, marking one of the first glimpses into a more aggressive side of her personality.

In the second season, she broke away from Team No-Name and created her own team, FreeSmart, with members of her alliance. It was during this season that her behavior shifted significantly. Pencil became more openly antagonistic, manipulating events to benefit her team and her closest allies. She helped Match avoid elimination by interfering with the voting process, verbally attacked Ruby to the point of tears, and openly belittled Book and Ice Cube by calling them monsters. Her actions painted her as increasingly self-centered and willing to hurt others emotionally to maintain control and loyalty, she also started to become even more arrogant towards the contestants as episodes progressed.

By the time of the next season, she began to distance herself emotionally from those around her. Despite Match being her best friend, Pencil was seen insulting her behind her back while she was still eliminated. This lack of loyalty and growing hostility toward others became more evident as the series continued. Her focus shifted from alliance building to domination and control, showing little care for the feelings of her former friends.

In later episodes, Pencil took on the role of a toxic leader, particularly in her interactions with Bubble. She exploited Bubble’s submissive nature, manipulating her into following orders and suppressing her own judgment. Pencil found entertainment in the suffering of others, stopping Bubble from intervening when another contestant was being electrocuted simply for her personal amusement. Her behavior continued to spiral as she openly expressed disgust toward male contestants, showing a deep bias that further alienated her from the rest of the cast.

Eventually, her time trapped inside the EXIT for six years took a heavy toll on her mind. When she returned in the most recent episodes, her sanity appeared to have deteriorated significantly. She became obsessed with undoing the past and reconnecting with her old friends, even if it meant risking the structure of reality itself. In her attempt to repair broken relationships, she was willing to go to extreme lengths, such as trying to rewrite history entirely, regardless of the consequences. Her descent into instability added yet another layer to her already complex character arc.

She has shown to be extremely insecure about what her friends think about her, even to the point where she would accept a deal with someone she literally just met in order to go back to the past to fix things, she has constantly tried to force Ice Cube and Book back into her alliance, even when the two are clearly not interested. After Book said she outright hated Pencil because of her selfish attitude, she was left extremely disheartened and distanced herself into the clubhouse alone.

Relationships

Match

Since the first episode of Battle for Dream Island, Match and Pencil have been shown to always be friends, although often poking fun at each other, but mostly king to each other. This carries onto Battle for Dream Island Again, where Match sticks with Pencil until she is eliminated in BFDIA 5e, but past this point, Pencil starts to forget about Match, as when Pencil sees Match in BFDIA 14, Match happily greets Pencil, but Pencil dismisses her. In IDFB, Pencil directly calls Match a little bit "needy". and she does not mention her anywhere in the rest of BFDIA though this could just be coping with Match not appearing for some time due to being in the Locker of Losers. In BFB, Pencil seems to also be a negative influence to Match, because when Pencil is eliminated, Match tries to act like the leader, but ends up just being rude and snobby, especially to Bubble, who stands up to Match. Once Match is eliminated Pencil and Match see each other again and greet each other. When the Exitors including Pencil leave the classroom, they split into groups to search around Four's body, but Pencil tells Match that she should go with another group, though this could be because she thinks it would be better for them to split up. After the 6 years of stacking up items for the stack, the Exitors finally all come back up, jump up the gap from Four's mouth and escape. After Match is flung by the storm, Pencil does not mention her again in TPOT, which is despite them being best friends, she is never shown reminiscing Match.

Ruby

In No More Snow!, Pencil was very antagonistic to Ruby, and scolded her, making her cry. She apologized to Ruby, but Ruby was struggling to press the correct button.

Four

Pencil and Four are arch-nemeses. This is because Four trapped her in The EXIT. During TPOT 19, she zaps him off the roof.
