Plank is the imaginary friend of Jonny 2x4 in the form of a plank of wood and the overarching protagonist of Ed Edd n Eddy. Although he is claimed to be alive, he is never heard or seen moving on-screen. However, Jonny seems to be able to understand what he is saying, but this is likely just Jonny's imagination. Ed also thinks that Plank is alive. It is unknown whether Plank is really alive or not due to hints of Plank moving, such as the scene in "Gimme Gimme Never Ed". In the episode, Eddy seems to dislike him for hurting him in various ways. Plank is enrolled in Peach Creek Jr. High and plays on the football team, along with participating in the annual school spelling bee, which he failed for not speaking.
However, Jonny claims Plank did speak and spelled it right, causing Jonny to proclaim Nazz, who hosted the event, a wood hater and seek revenge, but forgave her by the end. Jonny became Captain Melonhead in the episode "Robbin' Ed". Plank became Splinter the Wonderwood, Jonny's sidekick, in the same episode. Plank seems to be the cause of most of his troublesome predicaments. Jonny even created parents and friends for Plank.
Plank is major anti-hero in Ed, Edd n Eddy and later, a major antagonist in its series finale Ed, Edd n Eddy's Big Picture Show.
About Plank
Plank is Jonny's companion cube. While he has no speaking role in the show, he often interacts with the characters as if he was alive. There are times when it seems that Plank is more than just a piece of wood, being able to fill Jonny in on stuff he really shouldn’t have known about because he was there instead or moving around off screen. One example would be sneaking up behind the Eds while they're stuck in a hellish roller coaster and push them down while they're helpless. In "For the Ed, by the Ed", he gives a merciless thrashing to the Kankers sisters because they were bullying Jimmy and were about to force him to eat a worm.
When the Eds are trying to repair his kitchen sink while Jonny was stuck in a tree, they take Plank to 'supervise' them by Jonny's demand. After utterly wrecking Jonny's kitchen, Eddy successfully lies to Jonny about everything being fine up until Plank 'shouts' to him that the kitchen was destroyed. Even Eddy looks bemused as to how Plank could be 'communicating' this to Jonny and covers Plank's mouth. When Eddy's disguising himself as a bunch of a new kids to the school to finally get some respect and friends, Plank gets smacked and slides right under Eddy's skirt when he's in disguised. Jonny goes to get him back, and Plank's able to fill Jonny in that the new chick's just Eddy in disguise and Jonny spills the beans to everyone right after.
