Beth Smith, nicknamed Space Beth, is a major protagonist in Adult Swim's Rick and Morty franchise. She is a version of Beth who was sent out by Rick Sanchez to embark on adventures in outer space and fight against the New Galactic Federation. It is currently unknown whether or not she's the original Beth or a clone of her.
Like Beth, she is voiced by Sarah Chalke.
History
Pre-Season 4
This version of Beth is known to have her origin in "The ABCs of Beth", where Beth lets Rick clone her. After the process however, Rick decides to randomly make one of the two "Space Beth", leaving it unknown which is the original and which is the clone. Regardless, Space Beth travels into outer space, where she comes into conflict with the New Galactic Federation and forms a rebellion named "the Defiance".
Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri
One day, the Defiance's medic reveals to her that she had a suicide device implanted in her neck by Rick to prevent her from returning. Enraged, Space Beth removes the device and returns to Earth to confront Rick. After a short battle, the two eventually sort out the conflict and bond over her previous adventures. However, after Rick implies that she is Beth's clone, Space Beth becomes hostile towards him again, resulting in a chase that ends with both Beth and Space Beth meeting each other.
The New Galactic Federation interrupts the confrontation by capturing and imprisoning the two Beths, leading to Rick and his family following them to the ship to rescue them. However, the two decide that they don't need Rick's help and escape with the help of each other, ultimately ending with Space Beth saving him from Phoenixperson. After the federation is defeated, both Beths reject Rick's offer to reveal which one is the clone in favor of bringing their family on a tour of space.
Solaricks
Space Beth returns to rescue Rick and Morty, who were both stranded on Mortyburg after Evil Morty destroyed the Central Finite Curve, and brings them back to their original dimension. When the two, alongside Jerry, are returned to their dimensions of origin after a failed attempt to reset the portal network, Space Beth, Beth, and Summer are tasked to go to the Citadel's ruins to create a beacon that'll return them to their home dimension, fighting off scavengers and interdimensional monsters to achieve their goal. However, Space Beth and Beth get into an argument over how Summer seems to be leaning more towards the former as a mother figure, leading both Beths getting eaten by a monster. However, they're both rescued by Summer as they, alongside the now-returned Rick and Morty, retrieve Jerry from his dimension and go back home. However, they then find that Beth's original Jerry is back in that dimension and he accidentally releases Mr. Frundles, who promptly assimilates Earth and renders it uninhabitable, forcing the Sanchez-Smith family to replace their dead counterparts in an alternate dimension.
Trivia
- Space Beth is named "Clone Beth" in the series' spin-off game Pocket Mortys. However, it's still unknown if this reflects on Space Beth in the show and whether she's a clone or not.
