Daniel Jonathan "Danny" Fenton, is the titular main protagonist of Nickelodeon's 2004 paranormal superhero animated series of the same name.
He's a 9th grade student at Casper High School. His parents research ghosts, and had built a ghost portal which didn't work. Danny entered the non-functioning ghost portal and accidentally activated it, fusing his molecular structure with ectoplasm. He became half-ghost, gaining ghost powers like intangibility, invisibility, and flight. He took on the alias Danny Phantom and now uses his ghost powers to protect his hometown of Amity Park.
He is voiced by David Kaufman, who also voiced Jimmy Olsen in Superman: The Animated Series, Dexter Douglas in Freakazoid!, Marty McFly in the Back to the Future animated series, Stuart Little in his titular animated series, and Max Justice in Hot Wheels: Velocity X. His singing voice is done by Chance Perez who portrayed Javi Garcia in Power Rangers Dino Fury and Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.
History
Early Life
Living with ghost-obsessed parents Jack and Maddie Fenton since birth, Danny had to put up with his parents' "unique" personalities alongside his older sister Jazz in the town of Amity Park, which often traumatized him. Danny wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up and, unlike his parents, had no interest in hunting (or anything to do with them in general) ghosts.
Living with ghost hunter parents didn't quite help with his social life either, as it constantly made him a laughingstock and a Pariah to the rest of his peers in his high school, but it didn't stop him from making friends in the form of a tech-geek named Tucker Foley and a goth girl named Sam Manson, whom he'd develop a crush on & vice-versa. However, despite not showing any interests in ghosts this did not stop his curiosity on the things they'd do, and Danny wouldn't know is that his curiosity will one day change his life forever.
Gaining his ghost Powers
One fateful day, Danny learned from his parents that they're currently building their greatest ghost invention yet: a machine that would enable them to see into the ghost world, but when they tried to activate it, the portal didn't seem to work which caused his parents to give up on the portal. But really fascinated with the concept of a world of ghosts, Danny alongside Sam and Tucker began exploring the lab, during which Danny (at Sam's suggestion) decides to check out the ghost portal, but upon looking inside it he accidentally activated the Ghost Portal from the inside (he unknowingly turned on the on-switch inside the portal which was something his parents forgot), causing the portal to turn on and being inside it causes his molecular structure to become infused with ectoplasm.
This causes Danny to become half-human and half-ghost and gain an array of ghostly powers. Since he really didn't want to be a half-ghost at first, Danny did his best to try and be normal as he can be, but with the Fenton portal now fully active it now causes ghosts to enter the living world and do whatever they want. After spending a whole month of trying to lay-low when the ghost of his school's old Lunch Lady attacks in retaliation for his pals arguing over the school's menu and proves to be a serious threat, as well as seeing his parent's failing at their own profession, Danny steps in and puts the Lunch Lady out of commission and sends her back to the ghost world. Greatly impressed with the heroic deed he's done, Danny decided to take on the role of a superhero to protect Amity Park, taking the alias "Danny Phantom" due to his parents still viewing his ghost-half as a menace.
Meeting other adversaries
Danny's emergence as Danny Phantom quickly swelled up many suspicions on who the "ghost boy" is or what his motives are in the eye's of the public as well as causing some problems in his normal life outside of his newfound career in fighting ghosts. If that wasn't enough for him his meddling with the affairs of dangerous ghosts caused him to get the ire and attention of most other well-known ghosts in the ghost world, and they're very looking forward to taking him down. Some of these prime ghost enemies Danny would encounter is one with a great love for the new age named Technus, a more of bother-than-danger spirit with a love for anything box-related, and a real enemy in the form of a small blob... that's always piloting a giant-robotic suit named Skulker whose obsessed with hunting him because of his half-ghost nature.
But eventually Danny would soon meet a more personal enemy to his family life when his dad decides to bring the whole family to a college-reunion party hosted by his best friend back-then Vlad Masters, who has now a billionaire bachelor with an extreme hatred for his dad because he had feelings for Maddie as well and is determined to take back what was "rightfully is", Danny included. That night while staying in Vlad's manor for the night, Danny soon hears his father sleep-walking because of some ghostly interference, prompting him to bring him to the closest bathroom for safety while fights them off. But after defeating the ghosts, Danny soon comes across another ghost and despite putting up a good fight, he finds himself outclassed by his opponents abilities and is knocked out & is reverted to his human-half.
Though when he wakes up the following morning, Danny finds himself still in his bed which makes him assume it was just a dream, and he gets dressed-up to attend the party, only to feel quickly humiliated by his father's antics. But things quickly get dangerous for him when Vlad asks him to get a "present" he plans on giving his father inside a lab, upon arriving he finds a picture of him and his parents (with Jack's face being removed) before being ambushed by Skulker as he locks him in a box that neutralizes his powers, but before he could be killed by the ghost hunter, he is stopped by none other than Vlad who tells he can leave now. As soon as Skulker leaves, Danny finds out that during his college years, Vlad to got infected by ectoplasm by a prototype version of his dad's ghost portal that resulted him in becoming a half-ghost just like Danny, having also called his ghost alias (the same ghost Danny fought last night) "Vlad Plasmius" with all the same powers Danny had and more, but with twenty years more experience, which is something he's willing to show him to just as long as he (as well as his mother & sister) renounces Jack as his father and becomes his adopted son.
Of course, Danny views this as extremely insane and declines his offer, but Vlad doesn't back off just yet and he leaves Danny in the box before going ghost himself and flying to possess Jack and wreck the party to make it look like Jack did it. luckily Danny is rescued by the first nice ghost he meets in the form of the spirit of the Dairy King and he quickly battles Vlad once again but since he's still outmatched by him Danny resorts to possess his dad's body and threatens to expose both of them unless they call a truce and while Vlad accepts his terms, he makes it clear to him that he's now become Danny's arch-nemesis.
First trip into the Ghost Zone
On his parents wedding anniversary, Danny comes down to the lab to ask his dad something before his unwillingly shown his latest vehicle he built that'll enable anyone to travel across the world of ghosts, but when Maddie comes down where she angrily berates him for forgetting it again, she unknowingly launches the vehicle with Danny still inside, sending him right into the Ghost Zone: the realm where all ghosts reside. Though he was lucky enough to make it back, his mom has become fed up with his dad forgetting their anniversary and leaves to talk with their aunt, after his father rushes to try and makes things right with her, Danny and Jazz stay in the house to clean it up if the possibility they might make up, but he accidentally shoves his dad's gift to her right into the ghost zone, and out of fear of a potential divorce, he prepares himself to enter the ghost world and get it back.
Flying into the realm of ghosts for the first time, Danny has a hard time trying to find the gift in all the new-unfamiliar terrain the ghost world has to offer before being captured by the sole police force of the ghost zone and sentenced into the realm's toughest (and only) prison under the watchmen-ship of it's unscrupulous warden Walker where he is once again reunited with all the ghosts he defeated so far, as well as learning that the present is now in Walker's office. Determined to get out of here and save his parent's marriage, Danny is able to convince most of his fellow inmates to team up with him in a big prison uprising, which is something they all agree to, and while it proved to be successful, when Danny races to get the present Walker proves to be too powerful for him, but he is rescued by his friends and through them he learns that just how ghosts can move freely in their world, humans are the ghosts in the ghost zone, and he promptly turns back into a human and easily walks by the ghost warden and saves his parents marriage just in time.
The rise of Valerie
Learning Cryokinesis
Saving the world & the ghost zone
In Phantom Planet, Vlad created a new team of teenage ghost hunters, the Masters' Blasters, to upstage Danny. They were inexplicably able to hunt ghosts much better than Danny could, embarrassing Danny to the point where he began to seriously question his status as the superhero the people wanted. He was so depressed that, despite his friends' protests, he used the Fenton Portal to remove all his ghost powers, becoming fully human again. At the same time, however, a much bigger threat - the Disasteroid - was headed straight for Earth, timed to collide in just one week and destroy the entire planet; because Earth and the Ghost Zone are flip sides of each other, if Earth were to be destroyed, the Ghost Zone would be destroyed as well. With renewed determination, Danny returned to the Ghost Zone to seek help. His enemies in the Ghost Zone, however, were all too glad to see him in his powerless human state and took great pleasure in blasting him over and over. This inexplicably caused Danny to regain his half-ghost status and all his former powers. Gaining help from his allies and enemies from the Ghost Zone, humans and ghosts worked side-by-side and successfully saved the Earth from the Disasteroid. When the crisis was finally over, Danny revealed his secret identity to all of Earth and was hailed as Earth's hero. Danny revealed to Sam that he became his father's sidekick.
Personality
At the beginning of the series, Danny is an average, awkward, nervous, and friendly teenager. Like most teenagers, he has crushes on girls, occasional desires to be popular, a dislike of bullies, and embarrassment about his parents. Unlike them, though, he is afraid of anyone discovering his hard-to-control ghost powers, making him go from being a "geek" to a "freak". Not even sure about how to use his powers, Danny simply longs to be normal and unnoticed by anyone. But after he fights the Lunch Lady Ghost, he realizes he can use his powers to save others from ghost attacks and dedicates his free time to catching troublesome ghosts. This new-found sense of purpose begins to change Danny into a heroic, brave young man.
Over time, Danny gains confidence in himself and his abilities. He isn't scared of fighting ghosts, usually taunting them and putting all of his energy into fighting them off. He also gradually finds Dash more annoying and troublesome. As he faces more villains and bigger threats, Danny accepts that it's his responsibility to save those in need of help, sometimes endangering himself to do so. By Public Enemies, although many people think he's a bad guy, Danny is still determined to keep protecting Amity Park from ghosts, his dedication paying off when people begin to accept him as their heroin Reign Storm.
On the downside, he can sometimes become overconfident and impulsive, assuming he can defeat anyone easily or do whatever he wants without any consequences. This might lead him to use his ghost powers to take revenge on bullies, cheat on a test, or even just ignore an impending situation so that he can enjoy something. When someone like Sam tries to warn him about his actions, Danny can be ignorant and disagreeable, only to find out he was wrong later. Despite these issues, once Danny figures out what he has caused, he works hard to set things right, whether it be apologizing or saving the day.
When he's not worried about ghosts, Danny is naturally kind, easy-going, and helpful. On the other hand, he can be grumpy, frustrated, stressed, and mean, often making sarcastic remarks or his eyes glowing green from anger. Danny rarely gets extremely mad or emotional, only taking important matters personally like Vlad and Dan. His ghost hunting often cuts into his schoolwork time, but he does work hard after he puts his mind on the task at hand - except when he's lazy or distracted. Danny isn't the smartest person around, but he is clever at devising plans, having good ideas and using resources, like his powers, Fenton equipment, and friends with different talents. He loves making puns and exchanging witty banter during his fights, and while there are moments when he under-appreciated his friends, he is thankful to have them.
Physical Appearance
Danny Fenton has black hair and blue eyes from his father's genes. He wears a white T-shirt with a thin red collar, red cuffs, and a red circle in the middle, light blue jeans, and red-and-white sneakers. When he transforms into Danny Phantom, his hair becomes snow-white, his eyes become glowing green, and his skin changes from light to tanned. Danny Phantom wears a black jumpsuit with white boots, collar, belt, and forearm-length gloves. After "Memory Blank," he wears his logo, a white "D" with the negative space inside it forming a "P," on his chest. However, in the origin of Danny Phantom, the jumpsuit's colors were reversed, which is a white jumpsuit with black boots, collar, belt, and forearm-length gloves.
Powers and Abilities
Ghost Powers
- Human-Ghost Physiology: Danny possesses a variety of supernatural powers and abilities due to his unique physiology. The powers and abilities that Danny and his future self possess; although the former has comparatively lower intensity of these powers due to being young. However, as the series progresses, Danny becomes more powerful and stronger even gaining several powers his archenemy Vlad never got such as the Ghostly Wail and Cryokinesis which are shown to be very effective against Vlad. Some of his strengths (augmented by his ghost powers) are given below:
- Superhuman Strength: Danny possesses superhuman strength in his ghost form, although it is somewhat significantly lower as compared to Vlad (whose assumed strength level is between 40-50 tons) or his evil future self. In ghost form, he is strong enough to carry both Sam and Tucker with relative ease and hurl large objects at enemies easily. He is also strong enough to rip through reinforced titanium and can easily lift and throw hordes of enemy ghosts. In "Secret Weapons" he managed to intercept a punch from Jazz while she was using the Ecto-Skeleton (which amplifies the strength of the user 100 times). In addition, gravity does not affect Danny's ghost body, so he can lift heavy objects with ease. Danny has been shown to be able to lift a school bus (which weighs 12-15 tons) with ease. He has also displayed enough strength to punch a giant ghost dragon across an area as well as knock it down and hurl it in mid air (although the latter required effort).
- Superhuman Durability: Danny is more resistant to injuries or damage than an ordinary human or ghost. He can withstand a variety of great impacts without taking much damage, such energy blasts, oil truck explosions, and multi-story buildings crumbling down or being hurled by enemies, although sometimes he gets slightly bruised as a result of the impact. While human, Danny can withstand many hits and blows that would cause injury to any normal teenager. In his ghost form, his body is incredibly resistant to damage and has demonstrated a high threshold for pain. With the Ecto-Skeleton, Danny could withstand hits from Pariah Dark, and even a massive pile-on of ghosts.
- Superhuman Agility: In his ghost form, Danny's agility, balance, and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels beyond those of a normal human being. He can effectively dodge attacks, swing from things easily, and perform acrobatic feats such as backflips. Danny is far more agile, due to his young age and somewhat short stature. He is able to stretch freely to dodge various projectiles such as swing blades, bullets or arrows.
- Superhuman Flexibility: Danny's flexibility is pushed beyond the natural level, making him far more flexible than humans. Due to his ability to manipulate his body he is able to bend and twist his far beyond the normal limits of human physiology.
- Superhuman Speed: According to Tucker Foley in "Maternal Instinct", Danny can fly at 112 miles per hour. By "Phantom Planet", he is able to fly even faster, as evidenced by the speed at which he circles the world.
- Superhuman Reflexes: In ghost form, Danny has dramatically enhanced reflexes, being able to dodge attacks with ease. One of his best displays of reflexes and agility is when he dodges the pendulums traps inside Pariah Dark castle, in the episode Fright Night. In "Beauty Marked", he was able to catch an arrow shot at him with his bare hands.
- Superhuman Stamina: While human, Danny has the same level of stamina as a normal teenager, but in ghost form, he can exert himself at peak capacity for hours before fatigue begins to impair him. In "Reality Trip", he was able to keep the Fenton Jet invisible for an entire night.
- Superhuman Endurance: Like all ghosts and half-ghost, Danny can endure attacks and pain far beyond what humans can handle. In Flirting with Disaster, Danny was shown to endure being shot by Valerie in her new suit and still use his Ghost Stinger.
- Superhuman Equilibrium: Probably due to his flight and agility, he has the ability to achieve a state of perfect equilibrium in any position imaginable. He seemed able to adjust his position almost by instinct, which enables him to balance himself on a scythe, balanced on a rope at great high, and perfectly walk on a wall like if it's the floor. He was also able to use this to balance himself and a bus that he was carrying from behind.
- Superhuman Healing: In ghost form, Danny is capable of healing at much greater speeds than that of an ordinary human, likely due to his body's ecto-biological structure. He has proven capable of healing from slashes and puncture wounds within a short amount of time, and even his suit appears to regenerate sometimes. Although when he gets injured, Ectoplasm oozes out instead of blood which aids in his healing. In his human form, his healing rate is also enhanced, even though it is weaker than in his ghost form. The limits of his regeneration is unknown, so it unknown if he can regrow missing limbs.
- Reconstitution: (briefly) In one instance, he completely reconstructed his body after Freakshow reduced him to a puddle of goo. Danny uses this power after Freakshow turned him into jelly and he was smashed apart by a rollercoaster cart. Possibly an aspect of his spectral body manipulation ability, he may be able to reform if similarly damaged in ghost form or could have also just been caused by Freakshow so that he could torture Danny more.
- Paranormal Immunity: As a half-ghost, Danny's unique physiology makes him have a higher or totally immune/resistance to many/several types of supernatural attacks/effects from ghost powers that affect humans, such as Ember's music and Spectra's ghost illness, due to his powers, but if the power/attack is enhanced, this ability is rendered useless. Examples of powers affecting him are Desiree's reality warping abilities, Ember's amplified powers, and presumably Kitty's banishing kiss, thus rendering this ability useless. Examples of this ability that rendered him immune were when Ember's hypnotic music/love spell could not affect him until she got more powerful in "Fanning the Flames", he was immune to Spectra's ghost illness in "Doctor's Disorders", and even Medusa's stone stare as he directly looks at Medusa and didn't instantly turn to stone in "Boxed Up Fury". In "Frightmare", Danny was put to sleep by Nocturn, but he was able to wake up on his own without the need to be overshadowed. He may also be immune to some earth diseases except for the common cold.
- Going Ghost: Danny can transform between human and ghost at will. This manifests as white rings (transformation rings) extending from Danny's waist, then sweeping across his body. His battle cry, "I'm going ghost!" or a variant thereof, often accompanies his transformation (sometimes he transforms without saying it). Once transformed, he can use all his ghost powers. He can switch back to human form at will, and can still access some of his powers like weak ghost rays and intangibility in human form.
- Eye/Semi-Transformation (Ghost Form's Eyes in Human Form): Danny has occasionally, when feeling greatly angered or annoyed, making his blue eyes glow green in human form (most likely against his will although he once did it willingly when conceiving a devilish idea in "Parental Bonding"). Danny can transform any part of his body into ghost-mode while the rest stays human. This is evident when he makes his chin intangible to stop Dash from hitting him. ("Reign Storm").
- Transformation Shock/Aural Projection: He calls for a massive amount of spectral energy, sending out a wave of white light that repels any nearby enemy ghosts, sending them flying away from him. He first used this ability in "My Brother's Keeper", forcing Spectra to release her grip on him. It takes the shape of his transformation rings but does not transform him. This may be an outward manifestation of his feelings. Danny can release any clutches from his enemy. However, this ability does not seem to always work. It was revealed that he cannot release himself from the rope that was formed by Ecto-Energy Constructions in "The Ultimate Enemy".
- Intangibility: Danny can turn his body intangible to pass through walls or other solid matter. This power was the hardest for Danny to control at first, often activating at embarrassing times such as causing his pants to fall down while he was asking a girl out. He can turn just a portion of his body intangible as well, and he can also turn other people or objects intangible when in contact with them. Humans may experience a slight tingling sensation when turned intangible. as in "The Million Dollar Ghost" when he phases his dad, Jack stated his stomach felt funny. Danny one retrieves his spork from inside of his stomach by using his intangibility.
- Invisibility: Danny can make his body invisible to both humans and ghosts, Danny cannot be seen by human eyes or scanning devices. It is quite common for Danny to make only a part of his body invisible. Danny can make other people and objects invisible to him provided that he is in physical contact with them.
- Flight: Gravity does not affect Danny's ghost form, so he can fly through air and space at considerable speeds and heights, and walk on vertical surfaces. While flying, his legs often become a ghostly tail. His top speed was measured to be 112 mph in an early episode, and he almost certainly has gotten faster since then, as he flew from Amity Park to Minnesota in one night and flew around the world in Phantom Planet. Twice, Danny has been seen flying through space as in Flirting With Disaster, Danny used the X-23 Booster Rocket to launch himself into space to stop Technus. In Phantom Planet, while battling Vlad in space for the In-fi Map it revealed he can fly through space even without the Booster rocket.
- Wall Walking: Twice Danny has walked on walls by manipulating his center of gravity to walk and run up and down uneven and vertical surfaces as though they were horizontal. This either because of his ability to fly by defy gravity or of some unexplored ability to adhere/combine/interact to/with the molecular structure of the surface of walls.
- Back Slide: This allows him to zip along a surface in one direction without moving his legs. He saw a possessed Paulina to perform this ability in Public Enemies; he first used this ability in Lucky in Love.
- Ecto-Energy Manipulation: Danny can manipulate his innate ecto-energy in various ways.
- Ghost Ray: Danny can fire green laser-like blasts of ecto-energy from his hands or fingertips, but it can also be fired from seemingly anywhere, including his butt. Whereas it's often fired as a single blast or a streaming beam of energy, but he can also fire multiple blasts at once by waving his hand. These blasts often explode on contact and are powerful enough to melt steel. Danny also concentrates his ecto-energy into super-charged attacks (in Kinder Spirits) or spheres of different sizes (from small ones to large ones) before firing them at his opponents. During his first battle with Nocturn, he blasted an energy wave to protect himself from Nocturn's attack. In "Claw of the Wild", he is seen shooting explosive energy rings. While in an Ecto-Skeleton, his ghost rays turn blue. At his peak, Danny can single-handed or two-handedly fire a powerful ghost ray that can tear apart any weak ghost molecule by molecule and destroy the area nearby as seen when used on one of his clones and Nocturn's Sleepwalkers. This power has other variants and/or can be fired like:
- Repulsion Field: A unique power that only Danny possesses, he can send out a pulse of energy in all directions from his body to repel large groups of attackers. Danny uses this power every time he is surrounded by too many enemies at once. This is one of the many powers he has developed that Vlad hasn't.
- Energy Strike: Danny can channel ecto-energy through his fists to enhance the strength of his physical attacks. He only did this when he fought Tucker Phantom. He can also concentrate his natural ecto-energy in his hands, which allows him to cut through objects as hard as steel like he does when fighting Undergrowth and Nocturn.
- Ecto-Energy Constructs: Danny can create constructs made out of solid ecto-energy in a variety of forms, including concentrated ecto-energy balls, waves (in Frightmare), explosive rings (in Claw of the Wild), and explosive discs (In Reality Trip and Boxed Up fury) which he used twice to draw a happy face on Freakshow's hat and while fighting a ten-headed Hydra dragon. He seemed to have learned it after seeing Vlad performing it.
- Ghost Shield: Danny can generate shields made of solid ecto-energy that can nullify or even reflect attacks from other ghosts. Like his ghost rays, Danny's shields are green in color. His shield can withstand blasts from powerful ghosts like Vlad, Dani, and Vortex. Performing a gesture with his hands, He can create a planar shield with the ability to reflect any energy attack back to its user. He first made a dome shield after seeing Vlad make one and first used a reflective shield in "Teacher of the Year". While in the Ecto-Skeleton, his ghost shields turn blue and can also block physical attacks as shown during his battle with Pariah Dark.
- Power Absorption: Danny can absorb an opponent's powers in order to increase his own ghost powers. Through his ghost shield, he absorbed Vortex's powers to control the weather, but it was linked to his emotions. This power was only given to him briefly. Since then, Danny has not been seen absorbing any other form of power from another ghost. It is possible that Danny may have some sort-of ability that allows him to absorb ecto-energy that is entirely foreign to him and utilize it himself, as he did with Freakshow (but with the Reality Gauntlet), though Vlad stated it was through his ghost shield.
- Energy Absorption: Danny can absorb his opponent's ghost ray and redirect back at his attackers or use it to increase his physical strength. He used this several times in different methods with different abilities like in "Public Enemies" to redirect Bullet's electric weapon back at him with his Ghost Stinger and later intently absorb all the ghost rays from multiple ghosts firing at him in "Phantom Planet" thus restoring his ghost powers. Danny can absorb his opponent's ghost ray and redirect back at his attackers or use it to increase his physical strength. He also used this ability with his ghost shield to absorb Vortex's lightning bolt (granting himself the former's weather controlling powers in the process).
- Power Augmentation: Danny can use his ecto-energy to increase his physical strength. When holding back the Fright Knight's sword with his hands, he was able to garner enough strength to fling the knight over his shoulder. When he does this, his aura (which is white or green) starts glowing brighter. He also used this power when he was trapped in an ectoplasmic goo web in the episode "Doctor's Disorders". In "Reality Trip", he used this ability to escape the web Freakshow's drum-spider fired at him. In "Torrent of Terror", he used this power to escape Vortex's snowball.
- Ghost Stinger: An attack that utilizes ecto-energy in an electric form. This was first used in "Public Enemies", where Danny uses it to free Wulf from Bullet's weapon and defeating Bullet and in "Flirting with Disaster" to knock out Valerie. Danny can send ecto-energy as electricity through an electric current, negating his enemies' electric attacks and sending them back at the attacker. It is possible that he actually redirects or manipulates the electricity with his hands since he has only used it when his enemy uses an electric attack. So, this may imply that he actually redirects the electricity with his hands. Danny's ghost stinger seemed to be strong enough to make Bullet evaporate but it assuming that lateral teleported away instead.
- Photokinesis: Danny can project light from his hand using ecto-energy when he and Dash Baxter go into a dark mouse hole in the wall of Fenton Works in "Micro-Management". In "Double Cross My Heart", he created a Flashing ecto-energy ball that explodes in front of The Guys in White, releasing a great amount of light in order to distract and blind his enemies. In "Urban Jungle", Danny generates light with his hand when he goes into the dark Fenton Works' lab. In "Claw of the Wild", Danny generates light with his hand when he, Sam, and Tucker go out into the woods at night to look for Nathan. He uses this power again later before he is confronted by Walker's goons.
- Pyrokinesis: Danny can generate and throw balls of ectoplasmic fire. Danny is able to manipulate his ghost rays to have several effects as melting abilities that made things hot as in "Reign Storm" he melted Dash's shoes without knocking him over and in "The Fright Before Christmas", Danny's ghost rays melted the pieces of paper of the Ghost Writer's book. After regaining his purpose in "A Glitch in Time", Danny was able to create fireworks.
- Ghostly Wail: Danny's most powerful ability is to generate an extremely powerful sonic blast of pure ecto-energy from his mouth that can destroy buildings and cause severe damage to both humans and ghosts alike and finish ghost who are too weak to withstand it. It is also effective against multiple targets, or against a very powerful enemy, and almost nothing can withstand this attack. It appeared to finish off all of his enemies in "The Ultimate Enemy". While he is capable of defeating almost any foe with this power, he only uses it as a last resort because it drains his energy extremely quickly, often forcing him to revert to his powerless human form after just one use. Although, he seems to have become powerful enough to overcome this in "Phantom Planet", though he was in the Ghost Zone at the time so he may have just been more powerful as a result then. After Danny uses his ghostly wail for the first time, his hair only changes back (though this may have been because of the Time Medallion or because it was his first time using it, so it was not as powerful and didn't drain him as much, therefore causing him to only partially revert back).
- Cryokinesis: Danny can fire blasts of icy energy from his hands or eyes that can freeze enemies on by touching them on contact from the inside out, radiate cold energy from his body, and create ice tools and weapons from thin air. He can generate a snowball that freezes everything it hits instantly. This ability also gives him an increased resistance to low and high temperatures. When using this power, his eyes turn icy blue instead of their usual glowing green. Danny can combine cryokinesis with his other powers for enhanced effects, like firing an explosive ice blast or generates a Ghost shield made of ice to protect himself from fire attacks. Danny learned this power in "Urban Jungle" and used it from then on to "Phantom Planet".
- Ghost Sense: When Danny is near other ghosts, a blue mist comes out of his mouth and a chill goes down his spine. In "Urban Jungle", it was revealed that this was a manifestation of his then-untapped potential to use cryokinesis. This ability is also Danny's very first ghost power he received in the series. It's not clear whether Danny is also able to detect half-ghosts; it worked to detect Tucker Phantom, but not for Dani or Vlad in either human or ghost forms.
- Explosive Snowball: Danny can combine his ghost rays with cryokinesis to launch an explosive ecto-charged snowball. He used this move to finish off Undergrowth in "Urban Jungle.
- Telekinesis: Danny can surround objects with his ecto-energy to make them move from a distance. Inexplicably, Danny has only been seen using this power once, to give a rake to the Box Ghost, and it is never seen nor mentioned outside of its one appearance. However, he did a semi-effect of telekinesis in "Prisoners of Love" when he used it with his ghost rays to clean up the lab, then in "Maternal Instinct" when he uses intangibility to sink Tucker into the ground without having to physically touch Tucker, and then in "Phantom Planet" with the other ghosts to turn the whole world intangible. In "The Fright Before Christmas", while under the Ghost Writer's reality warping powers he unconsciously took all the presents (which all glowed with a white aura, glowing brighter).
- Restoration: (briefly) In "The Fright Before Christmas", while under the Ghost Writer's reality warping powers he used this power to fix the damaged gifts while Desiree uses her power to fix the damaged trees.
- Weather Control: (briefly) After Danny's first fight with Vortex in "Torrent of Terror", he gained some of Vortex's power, allowing him to control the weather. This power was linked to Danny's emotional state, with him creating calm weather when he was calm or stormy weather when he was angry with effects like strong air/wind, rain, snow, hail, lightning, fog and temperature changes (ice and heat). Although his powers were on a smaller range and seemed to end just outside Amity Park. He caused great problems, as described by Vlad: "Your anger could cause cyclones, your sadness monsoons." When he had them, he caused a spike in the heat so strong that it set off the sprinklers of the building he was in, make tornadoes, electric storms, and massive hurricane winds while angry, a tropical rain while sad, and make it sunny while happy. Danny lost this power during his second fight with Vortex.
- The Void: He can pull all light into himself while reversing his ectoplasmic energy, causing ultimate darkness to fill the room. He would be the only one who could see in this darkness.
- Ecto-Vision: When Danny uses the Void, he can be the only one who sees in the dark.
- X-Ray Vision: (limited to self) In "Memory Blank", after Danny became half-ghost again, he was able to see his own bones after coming out of the Fenton Portal.
- Overshadowing: Danny can possess the mind and body of a person, object, or animal, allowing him to completely control his or her actions. While overshadowing, Danny can still use his powers of flight, intangibility, invisibility, and ghost rays. The subject has no memory of what he or she did while being overshadowed, but their thoughts and actions immediately after the overshadowing has ended can be affected by what Danny made them do. He can also overshadow another half-ghost, as seen when he overshadows Vlad's duplicate in "Eye for an Eye". Danny can't overshadow a person or a ghost if he isn't fully concentrated, or if he's taken out of the overshadowed by anti-ghost gadgets. He also can't overshadow someone (like Tucker Phantom) with enough willpower to stop him.
- Voice Manipulation: When Danny is overshadowing someone, he can disguise his voice. He used this only once, when he intimidated Dash and overshadowed him. On all other times when Danny overshadowed someone, the subject's voice didn't change; it is not confirmed whether this happened in-universe or was simply so that the audience knew it was still Danny. Like other users of this power, Danny can be marked by an effect, such as having the victims' eyes glow green, as his does in ghost form.
- Software Fusion: With the Fenton Helmet, Danny can introduce himself into computer software and overshadow his video game avatar to use his ghost powers in video games and combine his avatar's powers with his ghost powers. He can also change the appearance of his avatar. It is possible that he has the potential to use technopathy, as Dark Danny managed to hijack Future Valerie's communicator even though she was inside a ghost shield, and he was outside of it. This could have also been an extension of Danny's overshadowing power, or it may have been a new power that he gained through the use of the Fenton Helmet.
- Exorcism: Danny can separate a possessed person from a ghost overshadowing them simply by grabbing them with his hand or using a ghost ray. He separated Paulina using a ghost ray; he can do this by overshadowing the person, although he didn't use it with Tucker due to his power.
- Dream Invasion: Danny can overshadow a sleeping subject in order to get inside and influence his or her dreams. He used this power to wake up his hypnotized friends in "Frightmare".
- Fusion: When his ghost half is separated from his human half, Danny's ghost half can remerge with his human half by overshadowing to become one again. When this power is activated it allows him to simultaneously merge with another ghost at once, giving him access to their powers. To activate this, Danny must overshadow the ghost whom he wishes to combine with. Fusing with another ghost requires Danny to have the physical and mental resilience to handle the strain. It also comes with great risk, as the other ghost user could potentially overwhelm him. This was how Dark Danny was created when he attempts this ability on Vlad's ghost half in "The Ultimate Enemy". In "Identity Crisis", Super Danny attempted to fuse with Fun Danny, but it failed, and he ended up overshadowing him instead.
- Power Granting: Whenever Danny overshadows a person or possibly another ghost, he can give the victim his ghost powers, as he did with Valerie in "Life Lessons" allowing her to fly out of the Ghost Zone, although he was mostly in control. He also did this to a dream world Dash Baxter in "Frightmare" allowing him to become Dash Phantom, but this was likely in a dream.
- Duplication: Danny can create duplicates of himself that all have his ghost powers and can fight alongside him. After seeing Vlad use this power during their first encounter, Danny spends much of the series trying to learn to use it himself, but he manages to create just extra limbs. He had managed to properly use it in the episode "Beauty Marked" when he easily split himself in two (though just for a second) while fighting the Executioner Ghost and finally mastering it unaided in "Torrent of Terror". If his clones are hit together with enough force, they merge back into each other. This possibly means that even then, he cannot properly hold it, showing he has yet to master this power, though he did pull it off with the Ecto-Skeleton. By his college years, Danny appears to have mastered this power.
- Spectral Body Manipulation: Danny can bend, twist, split, and otherwise contort his ghost body beyond the limits of normal human physiology. He uses this ability mostly to dodge oncoming attacks. He first used this ability in "Mystery Meat", when he attempts to dodge the Lunch Lady Ghost's assault. He can force his body to split in half along the midsection, the two halves remaining connected with a trail of spectral matter, or even separate his body in half without any connection for a few seconds. The first time he split like that was in the episode "Shades of Gray", when Sam throws a book at him, and later in the episode "Pirate Radio" when fighting Youngblood.
- Elasticity: Danny has the ability to stretch certain or all parts of his body in an elastic fashion. He used this when he was battling Freakshow in Reality Trip.
- Size Alteration: One of Danny's clones were able to alter their size, indicating Danny might also possess this ability.
- Ghost Tail: His lower body will turn into a tail of intangible matter when flying. He has been able to do this since he first learned how to fly, though it seems to largely be an unconscious action.
- Self-Sustenance: Danny appears to be able to survived in harsh environments, as he was able to survived underwater without a helmet or oxygen tank, as well as surviving in low-pressure, low-temperature environments like space or cold realms like the Far Frozen.
- Vacuum Resistance/Space Survivability: Twice, Danny was in outer space without an astronaut/spacesuit and was unaffected by the vacuum, stardust, or cosmic radiation, though he still wore a helmet. This is probably due to Danny wanting air to speak (like Vlad). But Danny might have possibly worn a space helmet in case he was ever reverted back to human form, so it possible he may be able to self-sustain to breathe in space or just wore it to make himself look like an astronaut.
- Underwater Breathing: Twice, Danny has been seen breathing and talking underwater. It is possible that he does not need to breathe at all while in ghost form.

Abilities
- Quick Learning Ability: Danny possesses a variety of impressive skills, including a quick learning ability, allowing him to rapidly acquire new powers or abilities, such as mastering ghost shields and cryokinesis in short periods.
- Indomitable Will: His indomitable will helps him resist mind control and fight on even against overwhelming odds. He is resistant to overshadowing and mind control, often breaking free when controlled.
- Experienced Driver & Pilot: Danny is an experienced driver, capable of piloting complex vehicles like the Specter Speeder and a NASA shuttle. He also excels in strategy, often crafting quick plans to handle dangerous situations.
- Experienced Combatant: His combat skills are honed through experience, allowing him to fight well even without powers, and he is adept at swordsmanship, marksmanship, and using various weapons, despite lacking formal training.
- Skilled Tactician/Strategist: Danny is a skilled strategist and improviser, able to devise complex plans and adapt quickly to changing situations, as seen in "Pirate Radio" when he led his classmates to infiltrate Youngblood's pirate ship. He also demonstrates strong leadership, inspiring and rallying others, such as when he motivated his classmates to save their parents or lead a protest against Vlad.
- Multilingual Skill: He also knows multiple languages, including Esperanto, learned to communicate with specific characters, like Wulf.
Weaknesses
- Being part ghost, Danny is vulnerable to anti-ghost weaponry, which can affect him in both ghost and human forms, such as gadgets from Fenton Works, Vladco, and the Guys in White. He is also harmed by electricity, particularly ghostly electric attacks, and can be overshadowed by other ghostly entities, though he can resist due to his strong will. Blood Blossoms cause him extreme pain, with prolonged exposure potentially leading to death. Ecto-ranium, a rare anti-ghost element, causes severe pain to him and other ghosts. Danny can be detected in infrared while invisible, and special ghost-targeted gas has knocked him out in the past. Lastly, Freakshow's Crystal Ball Staff can control him, though this is no longer a threat after its destruction.
Trivia
- The fact his parents never figured his identity themselves is poked fun at by Dark Danny and Death Battle's co-host Boomstick; the latter calls them idiots, a sentiment Dark Danny lampshaded.
- He fought Jake Long in a Death Battle and won. Creator Burch Hartman watched and was impressed with the accuracy with which Danny was depicted as lost in the DBX video against Ben Tennyson despite being a ghost.
- It is unknown why only Danny's head reverted to human form in the Ultimate Enemy. There are a few fan speculations:
- This may have been because he had the Time Medallion inside of him.
- This may have been possible due to being in the Ghost Zone, which increased power--which is definitely a possibility as seen in Phantom Planet he used it twice without losing energy.
- This might have been because it was his first time using it, so it was not as powerful and didn't drain him as much, therefore causing him to only partially revert back.
- Danny is the only character in the series to appear in every episode. He also appears in the title card of every episode except "Phantom Planet," which had no characters in its title card.
