Homer Jay Simpson is the main protagonist of Fox's The Simpsons franchise.
He is the dimwitted and benevolent patriarch of the Simpson Family, the husband of Marge, and the father of Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.
He is an overweight, lazy, eccentric, and ignorant man. Despite his flaws and his below-average intelligence he has shown moments of great high levels of intelligence and is strongly devoted to his wife and children.
Homer works as a safety inspector low level in Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, in Sector 7-G, although he is often incompetent and mostly sleeps in the service and eats donuts. He spends much of his time at Moe's Tavern with his lifelong friends Barney Gumble, Carl Carlson, Lenny Leonard, and bartender Moe Szyslak to drink beers. He also went Krusty Burger to eat burgers and fries. At home, he is often sitting on the couch, watching TV while mindlessly eating food and drinking Duff.
Homer is the only son of Abe and Mona and he has a long-lost half-brother, Herbert Powell. Homer always strangles his own son, Bart, for his actions and disrespecting him and the others on purpose.
Over the past years, Homer has been regarded as a cartoon icon and a staple of American comedy. He is also the main protagonist of The Simpsons Movie.
He is voiced by Dan Castellaneta, who also voices his father, Abe Simpson, Krusty the Clown, Mayor Quimby, Barney Gumble, Sideshow Mel, Groundskeeper Willie, and many other characters in the same series, Genie in Disney's The Return of Jafar, and Aladdin television series and Earthworm Jim in the cartoon series of the same name.

History
Homer Jay Simpson was born as the third child of Abraham Simpson, and the first (and only) child of Mona Simpson on May 12th. His long-lost half-brother, Herbert Powell, was born about 2 years earlier. Yet, Homer wouldn't meet him for nearly 4 decades. He was raised on the old Simpson farm by his parents until they were forced to move out, due to Homer spooking the cows by jumping out of a bale of hay and scaring them into giving sour milk. At some point during his childhood, Abe seemed to feed beer to Homer Simpson. But then, he quit drinking beer until he was older upon Barney's suggestion after he caused a multi-car pileup in his playschool car.
At some point in his early childhood, Homer experimented to see if he could push fifteen crayons into his nose, which resulted in one being lodged into his brain and being responsible for his current below-average IQ. When Homer was between nine and twelve years of age, his mother Mona went into hiding following a run-in with the law. However, before she started protesting, she took Homer and her husband to the Woodstock Music Festival, where Homer ended up briefly adopting the Hippie lifestyle (and Abe Simpson attempted to send him off to the Vietnam War as punishment for wanting to be a Hippie). A few years later, Homer, along with Lenny Leonard, Carl Carlson, and Moe Szyslak, went over to a deep gorge for a nice swim, but the water was drained. When investigating why the lake was reduced to a muddy pit, he stumbled upon a decomposing corpse of Waylon Smithers' father inside the pipe, greatly traumatizing him and leading to his occasional overeating.
On his first day before high school, Homer pressured Barney Gumble to drink some beer, though he refused two he could study for his SAT tests. Barney eventually decided to drink some of the beer and would later become a crazed alcoholic. Homer attended Springfield High School and fell in love with Marge Bouvier. After high school, Homer and Marge bought an apartment at Springfield Place. During this time, Marge gets a letter accepting her into college. To pay for her tuition, Abe gives him a job at Simpson Lazer Tag as well as this, along with Lou Lenny and Carl, Homer is part of a barbershop quartet. When Marge becomes infatuated by her professor, Homer changes the band's name to Sadgasm and they invent grunge music. Marge realizes that she really loves Homer, and she goes back to him.
Eventually, Marge became pregnant with Bart. At this time, Homer was working at Sir Putts-A-Lot, turning the crank that spins the windmill. The two got married in Shotgun Pete's 24-Hour Wedding Chapel, a small wedding chapel across the state line. They spent their wedding reception alone at a truck stop, before ending up at the Bouvier's House, where they lived at the time. After failing to get a job at the newly built Nuclear Power Plant, Homer left Marge to find a job by which he could support his family. He went to work at a taco restaurant called the Gulp 'n' Blow, until Marge found him and convinced him to return home with her. As a result, Homer confronted Mr. Burns and secured a job at the Plant. Two years after Bart was born, Marge became pregnant with Lisa, shortly before the couple bought their first house. Homer's second leap to stardom was his success as the lead singer and songwriter for the barbershop quartet the Be-Sharps, even winning a Grammy Award (he later complains that a Grammy isn't worth winning). During his time with the group, Homer was frequently absent from home, which put stress on his marriage. After the group broke up due to their creative differences, Homer went back to Springfield to continue his old life. Sometime after, Homer drew up a budget so that he could work at his dream job, a pin monkey at Barney's uncle's Barney's Bowlarama. The budget included buying regular toilet paper and that only one of the kids could go to college.
Unfortunately for Homer, Marge became pregnant with Maggie, shortly after he started his new job, and not being able to support his family, he went back to the Nuclear Plant. Since then, Homer has started many jobs, including being a professional astronaut for NASA, but has ended up back where he began at the Nuclear Plant. He has nearly caused the destruction of Springfield a couple of times, after a nuclear meltdown at the plant and polluting Lake Springfield with his pet pig's Plopper (and his own) waste.
Homer learned the truth on why he never got fired from his job at the Nuclear Plant despite the fact that he screwed up 742 times, it was from his father, Abe making deals with Mr. Burns. Instead of being upset of his incompetence, Homer is relieved that he will never lose his job when he felt that he is empowered like the Supreme Count Justice. Homer happily thanks his father for securing his future where Abe revealed he only did what any father would and gave him the best life he could.
Appearance
His appearance is that of a balding overweight man. He has a perpetual shadow five-o-clock that can regenerate itself at a very fast pace, if he shaves. Despite their overweight status, and hate exercise, which at times has shown surprising physical prowess and agility for a man of his stature, as when training for Whacking Day and hitting several pop-up snakes with kicks and even back-flipping. His baldness is a contribution of several factors. Discovering when Marge was pregnant, he would extract a substantial amount of his hair. Another contribution is working on nuclear power for so many years that exposure to radioactivity has caused most of his hair to fall out. In one episode, he learned that if he repented of all their sins and became Catholic, I could go to heaven when he died. During his confession, he claims to have masturbated eight billion times and he has no plans to stop, and he does not regret it. Excessive masturbation can lead to hair loss as well. He wears a white polo shirt, blue pants, and grey shoes.
When he was a kid, he resembled to his son, Bart. He has a big brown hair. He wore a red and white t shirt, blue pants and black sneakers.
Personality
| “ | Lord help me, I'm just not that bright. | „ |
| ~ Homer Simpson |
Homer's personality is one of frequent stupidity, selfishness, laziness, and explosive anger; one might say it is that of the "Average Joe." He also suffers from a short attention span which complements his intense but short-lived passion for hobbies, enterprises and various causes. He admitted that he is a rageaholic.
Homer is prone to emotional outbursts; he gets very envious of his neighbors, the Flanders family, and is easily enraged at his son, Bart, and strangles him in an exaggerated manner. His trademark phrase to strangling Bart is, "Why you little...!" and on one occasion, "Why you little bastard!" From Wedding for Disaster. He also spanks Bart sometimes and, in one case, Lisa. One time, he was too busy to spank them, so he told them to go to their rooms and spank themselves. He shows no compunction about this and does not attempt to hide his actions from people outside the family, even showing disregard for his son's wellbeing in other ways, such as leaving Bart alone at a port, or allowing him to go court for skateboarding naked on his dare when all he would have to do is attend a 1-hour parenting class signifying not only his disregard for Bart but his extreme laziness.
While Homer has repeatedly upset people and caused all sorts of mayhem in Springfield, these events are usually caused by either his explosive temper or lack of foresight. Except for expressing annoyance at Ned Flanders, Homer's actions are usually unintentional. Most of his explosive anger is targeted on Bart, because of something stupid he had said or done. Despite their disadvantages, these common outbursts saved Homer from dying of a pent-up rage-induced heart attack.
While Homer's thoughtless antics often upset his family, he has also performed acts that reveal him to be a very loving father and husband, such as selling his cherished ride on the Duff Blimp and using the money to enter Lisa in a beauty pageant so she could feel better about herself, giving up his chance at wealth to allow Maggie to keep a cherished teddy bear; spearheading an attempt to dig Bart out after he had fallen down a well, even though he hates doing physical labor and arranging a surprise second wedding with Marge to make up for their lousy first ceremony, even going so far as to hire one of The Doobie Brothers as part of the wedding band and getting a divorce from Marge, essentially making their second wedding a "real" one.
Despite his hatred of manual labor, Homer does a surprising amount of DIY work around his home. He built a jungle gym, a costume of Florida for Lisa, a birdhouse and spice-rack for Marge however these are shabby at best and two of them actually fell apart. He also remodeled his kitchen when Marge felt insecure about hers after meeting the neighbor's deluxe one however this was more because he felt emasculated when Marge tried to phone a contractor.
Homer tends to derive amusement from the misfortune of others. He is a chronic thief and borderline kleptomaniac which ranges from petty to grand theft, stealing everything from TV trays to power tools and air conditioners, even an entire room of the Flanders House from Ned Flanders. He has also stolen golf balls from the local driving range, office supplies (including computers) from work, and beer mugs from Moe's Tavern.
Homer has at times debated against his brain. Occasionally, a specific body part such as his face, stomach or liver is also shown debating with his brain. In one notable scene Homer's mind actually leaves his body out of boredom, causing him to collapse. Homer is also inclined to retreat into fantasy, such as daydreaming of Germany as "the land of chocolate".
Homer's attitudes toward women, romance, and sex are occasionally shown. While Homer's marriage with Marge is occasionally strained, it seems generally happy. Despite this, Homer is often tempted with other women, and usually shows no qualms with gawking at (and drooling over) attractive women. Homer almost had an affair with Mindy Simmons but ended up not wanting to. He has made the occasional remark denoting his attraction to other women (including his neighbor's wife), even in front of Marge on an occasion, but always shows his devotion to Marge in the end.
In earlier seasons, (mainly season 1), Homer's personality was different. Homer was a grumpy and ignorant man who often got embarrassed by his family (instead of the other way around) but generally loved them. He also was prone to angry outbursts, such as yelling at Bart and Lisa, strangling Bart (which has continued in later seasons) and giving Krusty the Clown the middle finger in court after Homer had assumed it was him who robbed the Kwik-E-Mart (who was actually Sideshow Bob in disguise).
Homer has since developed into a less intelligent nicer person in later seasons. Homer's "angry personality" still sometimes surfaces up, usually whenever Bart makes him mad.
Deteriorating intelligence
Homer can be slow and forgetful with poor judgment. However, he also has moments of insight and creativity, along with decent knowledge of many subjects. Despite likely having below-average intelligence, Homer does have a degree of long term, calculated planning of what might happen, such as when, shortly before taking his "forget-me-shot" from Moe Szyslak, requested for their anniversary party to have a Moon Jump, due to realizing exactly what will happen afterwards.
Homer's intelligence declined throughout the series, which Moe attributed to heavy drinking and exposure to nuclear waste.[1] His intelligence may also be hindered by the "Simpson gene," repeated cranial trauma, and a crayon lodged in his head. His father also beat him down instead of encouraging his intellectual growth. He is implied to have repeated second grade.
Homer's IQ was once said to be 55, though this may not be serious, since this would count as intellectual disability and affect his ability to do basic daily tasks. His IQ was said to jump up 50 points to 105 (about average) when the crayon was removed from his head, though he then had it reinserted.
Powers and Abilities
- Superhuman Strength: Homer's strength often varies for comedic purposes, though he is portrayed as being considerably strong. He is once able to lift a motorbike above his head, and use it as a sword effortlessly.
- Superhuman Durability: Homer has repeatedly survived things that could easily kill other people. His well-padded stomach allowed him to survive direct cannon fire to the stomach with no immediate injuries, though later it was found that repeated fire had destroyed his stomach which could have killed him.
- Possible Immortality: During the fight between him & Peter Griffin in the episode "The Simpsons Guy", he revived himself after being crushed to death within several moments.
- Hand-To-Hand Combat: Homer is a talented fighter, fighting with great prowess in his duel with Peter Griffin, Smithers, Tom, Meathook and George H.W. Bush, he is an expert on using weaponry such as using a fork to outmaneuver Fat Tony's mobster's Louie who was trying to stab him after Mark Hamill told Homer to use the forks to fend off against the attack, another instance is where Homer is excellent in gunman-ship on multiple occasions.
- Cartoon Physics: In addition to being able to accomplish what no man of his health and standing could, Homer has been able to accomplish things that defy all logic and reason whatsoever, such as causing cornflakes and milk to burst into flames and cause a nuclear meltdown in a testing van, despite no fissionable materials being present in it at the time.
- Inventing Skills: despite his stubbiness, Homer has portrayed a sense of being able to craft anything with unexpected and wacky results, notably for creating "The Flaming Homer" a extremely successful drink he came up with from nearby ingredients and Heat from Selma’s cigarette where it would be later stolen and renamed by Moe. Homer’s critical thinking enables him to make an elaborate drinking business using a bowling Alley and many amateur contraptions that he has shown to his own family such as: creating an electric hammer, A Shotgun that shoots viles of makeup fluid and the Lazy-man reclining chair.
- Unfathomable Appetite: Homer possesses a profound gluttonous appetite that humbled Captain Horatio Mcallister's restaurant and the Blue Demon Technician by eating every known Donut in the world in one course, he does have limits however when he started to become hesitant while competing the Stake contest.
- Indomitable Willpower: Homer possesses a determined nature when things never come to his way, being able to display moments of having to deal with risky situations such as overcoming Russ Cargill's Dome using a motorcycle and putting himself in harms way whenever it's the best chance such as in "Bart the Daredevil, when interfering Bart from riding his skateboard over the Springfield Gorge, Homer's ounces of stupidity outclassed a Lie detector to break when being interrogated by Agent Muller and Agent Scully.
- Immense Mass: Homer is shown to have an incredible mass due to his eating habits, as shown many times to have a durable and immaculate body mass that led him to be caught in "King-Sized Homer" to prevent a leak in the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, and his mass of skin submerging a Chinese masseuse who attempted to give Homer's back treatment. He eats too much the Krusty Burger limited Ribwiches.
- Driving Skills: Homer is capable of using vehicles as shown using a Motorcycle with immense speed to overcome the Dome, being able to operate Otto's school bus when fighting Peter Griffin and a Robot Chicken Couch Gag where he was drag racing with Otto man.
- Creativity: Homer cane become innovative on some occasions except at times when he failed to design a car for his brother Herb (who is also an inventor) despite this Homer has moments depending on scenario, being able to resolve situations by only his own means, such as using a Soda can by pouring Pop rocks just to blow up an auditorium to evade an angry mob of people just to get the Gummy Venus De Milo, and being able to come up with antics such as using a motorcycle to break the dome.

Trivia
- In the early episodes of the show, including the shorts and Season 1 to mid-Season 2, Homer's voice sounds like Ebenezer Scrooge from The Stingiest Man in Town (due to his voice actor's earliest portrayal beginning as a loose impression of the late Walter Matthau, Mr. Scrooge's voice actor). However, in later seasons, the modern Homer voice was fully established.
- In a future episode, Homer is the First Spouse of the United States, with Marge being the president.
- Homer's SSN is 568-47-0008.

- Frank Grimes criticizing Homer for his immature adult behavior with the intelligence of a six-year-old.
- George H. W. Bush criticizing Homer for his lack of parenting towards Bart and letting him get everyone into trouble.
- Frank Grimes Jr. criticizing Homer for his ape-like incompetence, due to his lack of intelligence and stupid nature.
- Homer and the entire Simpson family don't have a page made in Villains Wiki, due to many heroic and touching actions. However, it was not only about "Treehouse of horror chapters", but also because of the heroic and benevolent nature of the Simpson family, given that they are a middle-class family.
- During his encounter with the Griffins in the episode "The Simpsons Guys," Homer Simpson is seen as the heroic opposite of Peter Griffin. Both main characters are dimwitted fathers, each a member of a distinct family (the Simpsons are a middle-class family, while the Griffins are a dysfunctional family). However, the key difference between these two is that Homer Simpson is a benevolent father who, despite having a whole list of misdeeds under his belt, is generally a well-meaning person who strives to do good deeds even if his stupidity gets in the way, whereas Peter Griffin is a abusive parent who, while being just as stupid as Homer, commits numerous crimes throughout the Family Guy franchise and is generally unapologetic about how much harm and destruction he causes. This represents what would have happened if Homer had acted the same way as Peter Griffin.
- Although he is not a model parent, Homer Simpson is known for being the funniest and most appreciated father in animated history.
