Michel "Mickey" Mouse[1][2][3][4] is, the titular main protagonist of the franchise of the same name, as well as the mascot of The Walt Disney Company. Fancifully estimated as standing 2 ft. 3 in. (68.58 cm) and weighing 23 pounds (10.43 kg), Mickey rapidly rose to the pinnacle of American culture, being more widely recognized overseas than any other American icon but the U.S. flag.
For over a century, he has signified the Walt Disney Company, animation, goodwill, fun, laughter, and most of all, Walt Disney himself. It was said by Lillian Disney, his wife, that over the years, Mickey and Walt grew together and were mirrors of each other's personality. They both started off mischievous and cheeky, but as they grew older, preferred to help others and step out of the spotlight to observe others and work their magic. President Jimmy Carter once said; "Mickey Mouse is the symbol of goodwill, surpassing all languages and cultures. When one sees Mickey Mouse, they see happiness". Mickey is normally depicted as living a modest life with his pet dog, Pluto. His earliest cartoons portrayed him as a country boy living in the Midwest. The Adventures of Mickey Mouse: Book I—published in 1931—described Mickey as living "in a cozy nest under the floor of the old barn." As the shorts evolved, Mickey's residence was moved to the more urban settings of Hollywood, California, as seen in Mickey's Kangaroo and Mickey's Elephant. The official backstory of Disneyland's Mickey's Toontown plays into this, explaining that Mickey is of midwestern origins, but moved to Hollywood for the sake of his acting career. Physical Appearance
As designed by Ub Iwerks, Mickey’s body was primarily comprised of circles and soft, rounded shapes. Mickey’s most notable physical features are his ears, which are always depicted as circular from every angle. Mickey’s 3-circle silhouette has become a well-known emblem of the character and an established symbol in pop culture. Originally, Mickey’s face was a plain white color. When Fred Moore redesigned the character, Mickey’s face adopted a Caucasian-toned hue.
One of the most significant changes to Mickey’s design were his eyes. They were originally drawn as blackened ovals, which moved across the entirety of his face to convey looking in different directions. For a brief period of time, beginning in The Karnival Kid, Mickey was drawn with "pie eyes" to create the illusion of light reflection. For Moore's redesign, pupils were added to Mickey's eyes to allow for more expression in the character animation. In Kingdom Hearts III—which adds further detail to the character models through computer animation—Mickey is depicted with blue irises.

Since The Opry House in 1929, Mickey has worn a pair of white opera gloves. Also known as “Toon Gloves”, the garments were added to Mickey’s ensemble as a means of distinguishing his hands from his black-furred body. In the first of Mickey's colored cartoons, his gloves were yellow. Mickey sports only three fingers and a thumb, which was a conscious choice by Walt Disney and his animators. Mickey is easily recognized by his red shorts, white gloves, and large yellow shoes as well as his round mouse ears. He often gets himself into trouble that varies in seriousness as a result of his mischief and the fact that he can be forgetful, but extremely imaginative. Even so, he can often think quickly enough to get himself out of a predicament before things get too out of hand, mostly because of his incredible imagination, persistence, and valiant ways.
Mickey sometimes chooses fun and adventure over working, a trait disliked by Minnie Mouse. While usually always having the better amount of luck, when teamed with his pals Donald and Goofy, he and his friends often end their day in failure and all three are the faults. Even so, Mickey has, on many occasions, proven to be the most reliable of the three being that, he has far better control over his temper than Donald, and more common sense than Goofy. Even so, Mickey has a notable temper that, when necessary, can be unleashed. And like Goofy, he can be clumsy every now and again. Still, these traits are less powerful for Mickey than they are for Donald and Goofy, making him the brains, and leader, of the trio and proves that he is, overall, more reliable and competent.
Mickey stands as a father figure for his pet Pluto and has grounded him on many occasions as if he is a young boy. He also counts Pluto as his best pal and usually puts him before nearly everything else. Mickey describes himself as a good sport but on occasion has lost his temper on both enemies and friends. He is usually dumbstruck by the mere sight of Minnie Mouse, giving her many titles such as "his best girl" and constantly goes out of his way to impress her. Mickey loves her with all his heart and Minnie loves him in return. From experience, Mickey believes there is at least a small dose of kindness in everyone's heart, resulting in him being quite forgiving. He is also warm-hearted, understanding and sympathetic.
Mickey is also incredibly brave, as showcased in just about all of his many reincarnations. Many of the classic cartoons begins with Mickey and Minnie enjoying each other's company until a villain (usually his primary nemesis Pete) kidnaps her and the takes her away, resulting in Mickey battling the villain, rescuing Minnie, and proclaiming his love. Mickey can also be very competitive, stubborn, and never backs down from a challenge, even when his opponent is twice his size. In many situations, Mickey has shown to be a trickster and enjoys pranking his enemies to get the better of them. This can notably be seen in the Mickey Mouse Works shorts "Mickey's April Fools", "Mickey's Mountain", and "Mickey's Cabin".
Despite being very heroic, Mickey prefers to be laid back and enjoys the serene moments of life above all. He is optimistic and hardworking during harsh times and often encourages his friends to keep going, but on rare events, has given up hope and even doubted himself. It's times like these when Mickey's friends, such as Donald and Goofy, are optimistic and encourage him in return.
Mickey is also incredibly noble and generally puts the people he loves in front of his own wellbeing. He has even been able to set aside differences with his foes when necessary, usually when it'll benefit the greater good. Several stories have portrayed Mickey going through great lengths (usually in a comedic manner) for the happiness of his friends, or in order to complete a simple favor, such as the shorts Hickory Dickory Mickey and Goofy's Grandma.
In spite of being an anthropomorphic mouse, Mickey has the tendencies to act with his animal nature, including the fact that, being a mouse, he loves cheese. In the television series House of Mouse, Mickey, being a mouse, is made fun of when he is shown to exercise on a hamster wheel and drink from a rodent drinking bottle (like the ones found in a hamster cage). These particular facts seem to only exist in the House of Mouse and haven't been shown again, proving to have been used for brief gags only.

At first, the two had quite a strained relationship, but over time the brothers began to develop a bond between them. Understanding Oswald's torture, Mickey would later feel guilt for his past actions that wrecked Wasteland and for ruining Oswald's life.
Mickey's shame reached Oswald after the battle against the Blot. When Oswald caught Mickey's heart, ultimately Oswald would choose to give Mickey his heart back for though he wanted to be remembered, he knew the heart rightfully belongs to Mickey. Afterwards, Mickey sees Oswald in the mirror again, but this time as brothers. Them, they team up to save Wasteland.
Bunny Children
The Bunny Children are Oswald's children and therefore Mickey's half-nieces and nephews. They adore their uncle Mickey, while Mickey in turn enjoys their playfulness. However, the kids can get a bit too fond with Mickey to the point they would cluster around Mickey himself.

Daisy Duck
They are very close friends and Mickey often gives Daisy suggestions on how to help Donald out when things get tough even though she sometimes irritates him because of easily getting bored, talking too much and overstaying her welcome especially when it comes to planning a date alone with Minnie.
Goofy
They are very close friends. Mickey is sometimes annoyed by Goofy's clumsiness, but knows Goofy doesn't mean harm so he is always kind to Goofy, and both are always willing to lend each other a hand. Mickey is also much more patient and trustworthy with Goofy than he is with Donald, which often leads to the duck's annoyance. Goofy is also very loyal to Mickey.
Pluto
Pluto is Mickey's pet dog. Mickey is sometimes annoyed when Pluto disobeys him and usually punishes Pluto by kicking out of the house, but always becomes incredibly regretful when doing so, especially if Pluto's intentions were pure or if Pluto becomes heart-broken to the point of running away. They always forgive each other in the end, and will always be loyal to the other at heart no matter the situation.

Yen Sid was Mickey's magic teacher in the The Sorcerer's Apprentice short of Fantasia where Mickey used Yen Sid's magic hat to make his job easier only to cause massive chaos. And ever since then, their relationship has been defined by Yen Sid having to very strict with Mickey in order to keep him from causing trouble. But despite this, Yen Sid and Mickey don't hate each other and are able to communicate amicably.
Raymond the Octopus
Raymond is usually shown to have a considerable dislike towards Mickey for constantly ruining his day and driving him up the walls with his mischievous behavior. However, despite Raymond hates Mickey, he has occasionally shown kindness towards Mickey in certain circumstances.

Duffy the Disney Bear
Duffy is Mickey Mouse's teddy bear, handsewn and given by Minnie Mouse as a gift to take him on a long sea voyage so that he would never feel lonely. Minnie also wrote a message and placed it inside a glass bottle worn around Duffy's neck. After Duffy visited Mickey in his dreams and gave Minnie's message to him, Mickey and Duffy became close friends ever since, traveling together on many adventures and making new friends along the way.
Butch
Mickey met Butch he was Mr. Slicker's second-in-command in his gang of thieves. Mickey convinced Butch to reform and he helped being Mr. Slicker to justice. Butch and Mickey remained friends ever since, and often work together.
Chief O'Hara
Chief O'Hara respects Mickey for his crime solving skills as such Mickey is the first person to he goes to for help on particularly difficult cases. But there have been times where O'Hara is not above arresting Mickey when he feels that he has broken the law.
Gremlin Gus
Gus was the first denizen of Wasteland Mickey encountered. During the journey, Gus served as a guide and friend for Mickey through the land and became one of his closest allies. Later, he along with Ortensia contact Mickey through a device he invented for his aid.
Ortensia
Unlike Oswald, Ortensia has a more welcoming attitude to Mickey, and lacks the intense of jealousy of her boyfriend towards Mickey. Ortensia was a victim of Oswald's losses, having been drained of her paint by the Blot when she sacrificed herself to protect Oswald. It was in her memory that led Oswald to start acting nicer to Mickey. After Ortensia was restored, she got to temporarily meet Mickey with his mirror. Later, she attempts to contact Mickey again for his help to set Oswald right.
Alice
In Mickey Mousecapage, Mickey and Minnie venture through Wonderland to rescue Alice from Maleficent (for the Queen of Hearts in the Japanese version).
Roger Rabbit
Roger is somewhat of a acquaintance to Mickey on and offset. Mickey is aware of Roger's clutziness, but never blames or scolds him (possibly because he never witnesses Roger's accidents in person). Roger was also the one to find Mickey after he went missing on his birthday due to a mistake he caused during the celebration, and is ironically hailed a hero.
Kermit the Frog
In this made-for-TV movie, Kermit remarks that he and the mouse known each other from an organization called FASA - Fictional Animal Stars of America.
Bonkers D. Bobcat
Bonkers idolizes Mickey, claiming to be his #1 fan. Mickey respects Bonkers, but not as eccentrically as he does. However, Mickey does come to like Bonkers after Bonkers saves him from captivity.
Sora
Though not as close to Sora as he is to Riku, Mickey still regards and exalts Sora as a trusted ally and good friend. Like most of his friends, Mickey stresses for Sora's safety, especially because of Sora's destiny as a Keyblade wielder. He also shows to have confidence in Sora whenever they fight together.
Riku
Mickey acts as a helpful friend to Riku while he's not with Sora. Similar to Sora befriending Donald and Goofy, Riku is the original character Mickey befriends in the game. Both are good friends, calling each other usually by their first names, like when he and Riku bonded during their adventure in Castle Oblivion. They are also very close friends, making promises that by any means are spoiled.
Aladdin
Aladdin helps Mickey defeat Jafar by tossing him into Jafar's lamp.
Terra
Terra briefly spotted Mickey leaving Yen Sid's tower, but didn't get the chance to talk to him. Later on, Mickey discussed the ongoing search for three Keyblade wielders, but explains Terra's location was still unknown while voicing concern.

Enemies and Rivals
Pete
Mickey and Pete are always at odds, even when Pete is not a full blown villain, and Pete has known Mickey the longest out of any characters. Though Mickey battles and despises Pete more than any other villains he's encountered, Mickey's kindness sometimes has him forgive Pete the most out of any villains. Pete also helps Mickey on some occasions. Pete is the closest to be Mickey's arch-nemesis, after Donald.
The Phantom Blot
The Blot has actively tried to kill Mickey, sometimes because he's an obstacle to his plots, or sometimes out of vengeance to all the times Mickey has foiled him. Luckily for Mickey, the Blot cannot bear to see anyone die, so he instead puts Mickey in complex death traps that, in site of their danger and difficulty in escaping from. Mickey usually gets out of them thanks to his cleverness.
Mortimer Mouse
Mortimer is Mickey's main rival for Minnie's love. And whenever Mortimer tries to steal Minnie from him Mickey usually ends up losing Minnie to Mortimer. At least until circumstances which are usually the result of Mortimer's own rotten attitude allows Mickey to win her back. Apart from Minnie they have been rivals over other things such as Christmas decorating and occasionally, these competitions have ended with neither Mickey nor Mortimer being the winner. But, when there is nothing for them to compete over, Mortimer appears mainly to cause Mickey trouble which, tends to end to Mortimer suffering the consequences for his actions. In fact compared to Pete and the Phantom Blot, Mortimer is more of an annoyance to Mickey instead of an actual threat.
The Queen of Hearts
Mickey knows better than to trifle with the Queen of Hearts despite good intentions, and the Queen in return less of an enemy to Mickey.
Maleficent
Maleficent is one of Mickey's most dangerous enemies, and is one of the few villains Mickey truly despises. She loves to see the mouse suffer and Mickey doesn't hesitate to stop her. However, Mickey does have some mutuality and he did forgive Maleficent at least once. Regardless, they are mortal enemies. It is Mickey's valiant nature that often pits him against Maleficent's cruelty.
Jafar
Jafar is Mickey's adversary. During Halloween, Jafar banded the villains against Mickey until Mickey stopped them. He also tried to kill the mouse several times only to defeated by Mickey on everyone. However, he was able to comply with Mickey at least once when there was a great threat at present.
Master Xehanort
He is especially antagonistic towards Master Xehanort, whose actions have caused a great deal of pain and destruction throughout the worlds, including the ruining of the lives of Terra, Aqua, and Ventus, but merely quips that it was their destiny. He demonstrates his hatred against Xehanort once more during the events of Kingdom Hearts III, where, after witnessing Xehanort striking Kairi down in cold blood to reforge the χ-blade, Mickey tries attacking Xehanort with Ultima, but Xehanort stops the Keyblade warrior with Stopza.

Trivia
- Although Mickey Mouse is the official mascot of The Walt Disney Company, ironically the favorite character of the owner Walt Disney was Goofy, not Mickey.
- Mickey Mouse made his debut on November 18, 1928, when the short Steamboat Willie was released. Thus, On January 1st 2024, the Disney cartoons Steamboat Willie and Plane Crazy entered pubic domain in the United States of America. This includes various characters and elements from the animations such as the version of Mickey Mouse depicted in those shows. However, this does not involve any features that are still copyrighted and trademarked by Disney Studios, such as character names, but most countries have shorter copyright protection in time.
- When Mickey Mouse was created, his creator, Walt Disney, originally planned to give him the name "Mortimer". However, Walt Disney's wife, Lillian, said to him that the name "Mickey" is better for Disney's character. After this, Disney decided to call him Mickey Mouse.
- However, he later used the name "Mortimer" for a character, who is the love rival of Mickey Mouse named Mortimer Mouse.
- Mickey had tons of voice actors (Such as the late Wayne Allwine, Bret Iwan, Les Perkins, and Chris Diamantopolous). One of the voices of Mickey was even his creator the late Walt Disney himself.
- In the Japanese dub, he was voiced by Takashi Aoyagi (1983-2018), by Takanori Hoshino (2018-2021) and currently by Keisuke Ueda through the rest of the series.
- In the Pixar's 2011 film Cars 2, two characters named Uncle Topolino and Mama Topolino are tributes to Mickey, as Topolino is Mickey's name in Italian, meaning little mouse.
- He has nephews, Morty and Ferdie, which means that he has at least one sister (considering, that their surname is Fieldmouse).
