Crocus is a character from the manga One Piece. He is a former member of the legendary Roger Pirates, being the crew's doctor, eventually retiring near the Grand Line to care for a very large whale, Laboon.
Personality
Crocus is overall a very calm and serious man, who is nevertheless wise and caring toward everyone he meets. He is very devoted to Laboon, even taking a cannon to protect him and is devoted to his original crew of the Rumbar Pirates, only joining the Roger Pirates to be able to reunite with Laboon after leaving him at the bottom of Reverse Mountain.
He also prioritized everyone's' health above all else, such as chastising Roger when he drank too much despite his terminal illness, or disallowing Buggy from accompanying them to Laugh Tale due to his high fever, and he was the only one to be able to provide relief for Roger's illness. He would carry on this behavior toward taking care of Laboon, which is why he chose to stay with him, retired after 50 years.
Biography
He met the Rumbar Pirates upon them entering the Grand Line through Reverse Mountain, as he was the Twin Capes Lighthouse Keeper at the time. He spotted a baby whale following their ship, and Brook recommended they take it in, feeling bad for the whale. Crocus agreed to take care of the whale at the behest of Brook, and under Captain Yorki's approval due to their ship being banged up at the Twin Capes Lighthouse, where they needed to wait for repairs. 3 months past, with lots of partying being done, and the pirates where ready to set sail again, but they were unable to take the young Laboon with them across the Grand Line, so Crocus agreed to watch over Laboon after he was entrusted by his crew to do so, until the Yorki Pirates came sailing back around the world and came back to Reverse Mountain, after 2-3 years. However, much more time passed by as the Yorki Pirates were tragically killed at sea, leaving Brook to toil there for 50 years, though Crocus would only wait for the next 28 years before meeting the Roger Pirates.
The Roger Pirates crossed through the Grand Line, encountering Crocus. Their captain, Gol D. Roger, was suffering from a terminal illness, though luckily since Crocus was a doctor he was asked to join them to stabilize Roger's health. He agreed to join them to find out what happened to the Rumbar Pirates, accompanying them on their voyage.
In the Battle of Edd War a year later, Buggy asked Crocus about Roger's condition, to which he replied Roger was able to fight. For the next few years, Crocus would search for an answer on what happened to the Rumbar Pirates as he treated Roger, though one day he found a report about some of the Rumbar Pirates trying to escape the Grand Line through the Calm Belt, leading him to believe that some of them were cowards and broke their promise to return to Laboon, but was still not aware of Brook being the only survivor of the crew.
2 years later, The Roger Pirates were causing ruckus on an island when defeating a group of Marines, and they met the Whitebeard Pirates on the other side of the Island, whom they clashed with for three days and three nights before making a truce and having a gift exchange. Later on, Crocus would tell Roger that he only had one year left to live and the crew would visit Skypeia soon after, and later Water 7, Tequila Wolf, Sabaody and Fish Man Island, and later Wano Country, leaving the Kozuki family there. Eventually after going to Zou, they reached Laugh Tale, where they discovered Joy Boy's treasure and bursted into laughter, according to folklore.
After Roger became Pirate King upon finding Joy Boy's treasure, he disbanded the crew, and Roger turned himself in a while after to be publicly executed. Crocus would go back to the Twin Capes Lighthouse and spend time with Laboon, telling him of his travels. However, the whale would not believe of the fate of the Rumbar Pirates, leading him to bash his head repeatedly against Reverse Mount to find the Rumbar Pirates. Realizing he could not stop Laboon from doing so, he decided to treat Laboon's scars as he was doing so, and later built a system of tunnels inside Laboon as he grew bigger as he would be too big for conventional medicines to be applied on the outside of his body.
Present: Pre-Time Skip
Luffy and the Straw Hats and Vivi and Mr. 9 (both disguised at the time as Baroque Works agents) would cross the Grand Line on Reverse Mountain and encounter Laboon and Crocus, where Laboon would try again to break through the Red Line, though Crocus injected the whale with a medicine to relax him. Crocus explained the history of Laboon, prompting Luffy to ease Laboon's pain by picking a fight with him, as that was the only way he knew how and he knew Laboon would not stop trying to ram into the mountain. He declared himself Laboon's rival, telling him that they would finish their fight after the Straw Hats reached the end of the Grand Line, before leaving. Crocus gave Nami a Log Pose to help them navigate, to her gratitude, as a thanks for stopping Laboon from hurting himself. He would then remark to Roger in spirit on how Luffy was similar to him.
In the Thriller Bark saga, when Brook accepted Luffy's invitation to join the Straw Hats as their musician in Thriller Bark, back at Twin Capes Laboon was visibly much happier, to which Crocus took notice of, but unbeknownst to him it was because Laboon knew somehow that Brook would be returning to him.
Present: Post-Time Skip
In the Fishman Island Saga, Crocus was seen drinking with Scopper Gaban on the Twin Capes. He would be seen reading a newspaper with Brook's bounty, being happy to see Laboon happy and that Brook was alright.
In the Egghead Saga, he would be one of the many people across the world listening to Vegapunk's worldwide broadcast on a Den Den Mushi phone.
