Appearance
Shanks is a tall, muscular man, with an extremely imposing figure, although his stature is relatively akin to a normal human (at least compared to the other past Emperors, most of whom stand over twenty feet tall). He has neck length, tanned skin, and black eyes. The most striking feature about Shanks is the color of his red hair, of which his nickname 'Red Haired Shanks' stems from. Both he and his brother inherited this trait from their mother. He also has three scars across his left (undamaged) eye, which were given to him by Marshall D. Teach more than a decade ago.
He's always seen wearing brown, baggy pants, a white, button up, T-shirt, and an extremely long, black cape behind him. He has exposed, hairy legs, and brown sandals on his feet. When he was younger he wore a brown Straw Hat, which he previously received from his Captain, Gol D. Roger, but that ended when he gave it to Monkey D. Luffy. He wields a massive sword called Gryphon, which he has sheathed on his right side.
Approximately 15 years ago, Shanks wore a Knight's uniform similar to his father and brother. His left eye was also bandaged, likely his scar when it was fresh. A year later, Shanks' left arm had a tattoo Shallow Convenant, marking him as an assistant of the Holy Knights, though 2 years later he would lose it along with the entire arm after saving Luffy from a Sea King.
Personality
In spite of his status as an Emperor, Shanks has shown to be one of more noble-hearted pirates in the world. He is generally a casual, laid- back individual, preferring to take his time as he and his crew leisurely travels around the world, rather than rushing from one place to another. In this aspect, Shanks is not cruel like many other pirate captains, nor does he rule over his crew and territory with fear to gain respect. His friendly nature means he will not purposely seek to harm others, and he is able to make serious characters like Dracule Mihawk join in with his fun. In spite of not of seeing him in over twenty years, Shanks appears to still regard his former crewmate Buggy as a friend and easily shrugged off his ire.
He also likes teasing people, as demonstrated by his apparent reactions to Luffy as a child. In this aspect, Shanks himself is like Luffy, specifically in his younger years.
Having grown up traveling the world, Shanks is greatly attached to it. For that reason, upon learning of his true heritage as a World Noble, Shanks seemed to embrace his heritage as a member of Figarland Family and even claimed he hated his commoner life that was foreign to him. He was also rude and condescending towards Harald when he appeared to recognize him. However, this was a facade as Shanks secretly acted against the World Nobles by freeing Fisher Tiger and indirectly the slaves in the Holy Land. Shanks later renounced this privileged existence in favor of living his life of piracy. He also withholds the truth of his true lineage from others, for an unknown reason.
Shanks is against the idea of needless bloodshed, even if honor is involved. He only ever seems to step up for a fight when someone important to him is in danger or when the consequences are too severe to ignore, such as the case of Blackbeard. He also seems to admire those who have courage, as seen when a young Luffy stood up against Higuma for insulting Shanks and also when he saw Koby gathering his courage to stop the war, as the young marine believed that it was pointless to continue and saved him, despite technically being enemies. Shanks also spared Bartolomeo after he saw the latter's loyalty to Luffy, though he allowed his ship to be destroyed.
As part of his pacifist nature, he has demonstrated to be capable in diplomacy, in which he was able to ceasefire between the Whitebeard Pirates and the Marines, convincing Sengoku to agree with his proposition, in spite of the latter's hatred of pirates.
Nonetheless, much like many other pirates, Shanks does not like to play by rules and understands that things cannot always be resolved through peaceful matters, showing that he's more than willing to resort to drastic measures to get his threats across. He has little to no tolerance for those that threaten his close allies and friends, or those that pick on those unable to fend for themselves. This is best seen when he confronted Higuma and his bandits for threatening Luffy and scared off Ryokugyu at Wano after he attacked its citizens following the Onigashima Raid, threatening him with his intimidating presence. He also allowed his fellow giants, Dorry and Brogy, to wipe out Eustass Kid's crew after their captain had intended to attack his territory, in spite of them willing to surrender afterwards. Much like many others, he too is interested in claiming One Piece and understands the dangerous means and methods of achieving it so.
For this reason, Shanks is not as simple-minded as he appears and has shown to be a complex person with his own views. For example, he believes if two people share very different views, it is better they go their separate ways and has his own plans for the new generation.
Powers and Abilities
Shanks among the legends, Kaido respects.
Being a member of the Four Emperors, Shanks is easily in the upper echelon of the most powerful characters in the series. This is a well-known fact, even though he has yet to be shown in a prolonged battle, and he's never been seen going all out yet. Shanks has also held the title of Emperor for six years and is deemed on the same level of pirates who were veterans like Whitebeard, Big Mom and Kaido. Buggy stated that even as a pirate apprentice for the Roger Pirates, Shanks shone brighter than him and he believed that Shanks could easily succeed Roger as the next Pirate King. When he became a candidate for a Knight of God, his father boasted of his potential and said he could possibly match his brother who was already a Knight.
Shanks is considered a legendary pirate and threat to the World Government and Marine. His strength was hinted it at when his fellow emperor Whitebeard stated his duels with Dracule Mihawk, the strongest swordsman in the world, were an amazing sight. Shanks could clash with Whitebeard, a man ten times his size without much effort and proclaimed as the Strongest Man in the World. Another sign of his strength is that he held off fellow Emperor Kaido a day prior to the Marineford War and made it to the area, a day later without a scratch. Kaido, who is regarded as the Strongest Creature in the World, even considers Shanks to be the top six strongest people (consisting of Rocks, Whitebeard, Roger, Oden, and Luffy) that can fight him in a battle to the death. Big Mom, another Emperor even believed that with the army of Elbaph giants that she could defeat Shanks and the other Emperors. Of all the emperors (past and present), he has no Devil Fruit, which is further impressive because that makes his strength natural.
When he arrived at Marineford, he blocked a strike from Future Fleet Admiral Akainu, who fought several commanders of the Whitebeard Pirates and even Whitebeard himself, decided not to fight him after Shanks easily blocked his kill shot. When he challenged the marines on the battlefield, they backed off because they couldn't risk fighting another Emperor, despite being fired up from Whitebeard's death. The Five Elders also respect Shanks, listing him as one of the few people capable of stopping Blackbeard when he was rampaging the New World. This belief was proven valid at Marineford when he questioned Blackbeard, a pirate who recently strengthen his crew with five deadly criminals and possessed two devil fruits, if he intended to fight him but chose to retreat than face Shanks; while stating he was not ready to face him yet. After the time skip, Blackbeard continues to evade a pursuing Shanks even after reaching the ranks of Emperor himself. Eustass Kid (a pirate from the Worst Generation) formed an alliance with fellow members Scratchmen Apoo and Basil Hawkins to have a chance against Shanks. Weeks after the events of Wano, Kidd (who had emerged as one of the victors against Big Mom and now possessing a bounty is worth 3 billion) was easily defeated by Shanks.
He is able to provide a lethal level of intimidation just from a glare, and the few skills he's known for, gives him an air of intrigue as to what he's truly capable of. A glare from him sent a sea beast fleeing. Aramaki, a recently promoted Marine Admiral also chose to leave Wano after realizing Shanks was near and threatening him, stating he didn't plan on facing Shanks yet.
Intelligence
Shanks is also skilled at deception, successfully misleading his biological family and those around him that he embraced his heritage a World Noble. He cleverly managed to evade any suspicion of his role in Fisher Tiger's rampage.
Stealth Mastery
Shanks is extremely stealthy being able to erase his presence completely or make opponents think he is somewhere else.
This was seen when he freed Fisher Tiger, using the night's cover to hide his identity and later make it to the armory for him to get supplies for his revolt. He later made it to save Luffy from the Sea beast and his arrival to Marineford, where he intercepted a blow from Akainu with nobody seeing him until the attack was blocked.
Haki
Shanks is one of the few characters capable of using all three types of Haki. So far only him, Luffy and Kaido have use the advanced application of each one.
Shanks intimidating a Sea King that was trying to devour Luffy
- Supreme King Haki: His ability to use Supreme King Haki was first hinted at shortly after his introduction, with him using the intimidation factor of Supreme King to frighten off a Sea King with a single glare. The pressure he emits is strong enough to bring Vice-admiral Momonga to his knees, as well as intimidate Admiral Kizaru and Fujitora forcing them to retreat. He was able to intimidate and cause Admiral Ryokugyu to yelp in pain, forcing him to retreat despite being miles away from Wano. Shanks was also able to telepathically speak to the Admiral and warn him of his mistake. He has shown the advance application of this skill by augmenting his attacks with the infusion of Supreme King Haki. His Haki was also able to split the skies with Whitebeard and replicate Roger's signature technique, 'Divine Departure". His use of it was even more impressive than the former Pirate King as he was able to defeat both Kidd and Killer in one hit, while Roger's use of it did not cause Oden to become unconscious.
Shanks fending off Akainu's strike
- Armament Haki: Shanks has great mastery over Armament Haki. During the Summit War of Marineford, he saved Koby with his Haki-infused sword and easily blocked Akainu's magma-enhanced punch, which was powerful enough to burn strong enemies such as Ace, Jinbe, and even the Emperor Whitebeard. He also can utilize the advanced application of emitting Armament Haki out from his blade, allowing him to attack opponents without making physical contact.
- Observation Haki: Shanks possesses the ability to use Observation Haki, as revealed in his vivre card and has almost unrivalled mastery over it. He is known for being the Killer of Observation Haki as he is able to stop people from being able to use it as seen from Kidd. He also has masterful control over the aspect of pinpointing specific individuals over far distances, as seen in Wano and Elbaf. He has the ability to see into the future, and has shown to be able to do it far longer and efficiently than Katakuri. The former was able to do it for more than 10 seconds while the latter did it for only a few seconds.
Weapons
- Gryphon: The name of Shanks' sword is Gryphon. It's currently unknown if it's a ranked blade, and if it is, what rank it holds. He's a master swordsman, although the precise extent of these skills is currently unknown. The sword was described to be specialized in fire based attacks. It is also a conduit for Shanks to project the advance applications of Haki. He's only seen using his sword two times in the series. Once, during a brief clash with Whitebeard, on the latter's ship, and the second time during a brief clash with Akainu, at the tail end of the Marineford War. The only extended fight that's known of where he would have used his sword are the many he had with Mihawk, especially the final battle that Whitebeard referenced, but it has yet to be shown.
