| ~ Koby to Blackbeard |
Koby is a major character in the One Piece franchise. He is one of the only notable good-willed and noble marines in the series. He first appeared early in the series as a scrawny coward but eventually trained under Monkey D. Garp to become a marine captain. He became a member of SWORD (the Marines' special black ops unit of semi-resigned Marines who spy against the Four Emperors without permission from the World Government or the Marines HQ).
Following the dissolution of the Seven Warlords, Koby went on a mission with Vice-Admiral Yamakaji to capture Boa Hancock. However, the mission failed as most of the Marines were turned into stone against Hancock even with the Seraphims (although Koby offered Hancock a peace solution to surrender herself just so the Marines will spare her people only for the Snake Princess to angrily rejected his offer. The Marines and the Blackbeard Pirates (who also failed to kill Hancock to steal her devil fruit) were drove off by Silvers Rayleigh and Shakuyaku (the previous empress of Amazon Lily 2 generations before Hancock herself).
After a failed attempt to arrest Boa Hancock (due to the other Marines being turned into stone), he was forced to surrender himself to Blackbeard (who is holding 800 Marines as hostages) and became a prisoner of the Blackbeard Pirates. Helmeppo tried to convince his fellow SWORD member to help rescue Koby at Hachinosu. However, one of them (Prince Grus) tells the island is Blackbeard's territory, going there and rescue Koby is suicide and not an option when Grus tells to Helmeppo that if they go to Hachinosu, they'll immediately die because they're just too weak against Blackbeard and his crew. This was until Koby's mentor Monkey D. Garp decided to go to Hachinosu with SWORD to rescue Koby from the Blackbeard Pirates. Garp and SWORD arrived at Hachinosu to rescue Koby while Blackbeard is away to fight Trafalgar D. Water Law in attempt to steal Road Poneglyph copies and his Ope Ope no Mi.
Due to the Cross Guild, Koby has a 5-star bounty that is worth 500 million Berries.
In the Japanese version, he was voiced by Mika Doi. In the English version, he was voiced by Chio Su-Ping (Odex), Kayzie Rogers (4Kids), Leah Clark (Funimation) in his initial appearance, and Micah Solusod as of the Water 7 Arc. In the live-action version, he is also portrayed by Morgan Davies.
Summary
Past
At age 14, Koby was on a fishing trip, but he accidentally boarded a pirate ship belonging to the Alvida pirates. Defenseless and terrified, he became their slave whose job was to swab the deck; he was constantly abused by Alvida the whole time he was there. Koby was only kept alive because of his impressive navigational knowledge. Koby grew resentful of this and would dream of escaping and becoming a Marine, and secretly began constructing a boat to help him with this. Three years ago, he was forced to compliment Alvida on being stronger than Bartholomew Kuma, the recent Warlord.
Romance Dawn Arc
Eventually, he ran into Monkey D. Luffy, who was inside a barrel that Koby found drifting. Luffy motivated Koby to escape from Alvida who destroyed Koby's boat and nearly attacked him, but Luffy saved him and revealed his dream of being Pirate King while proceeding to set him free by sending Alvida flying. Koby later joined Luffy for a brief time and helped him save Zoro and the city of Shells Town from Captain Morgan and eventually left them to join the Marines.
Arlong Park Arc
He later appeared again working as a chore boy before spotting Luffy's new wanted poster and was pleased that he was working to his dream. However, he acknowledged that when they meet again both him and Luffy will be enemies, despite this he still keeps his morals intact and still considers Luffy a friend.
Dairy of Koby-Meppo
Koby bore witness to the apprehension of Morgan, pointing out to Helmeppo on his disgraced father. However, events occurred that led Morgan to escape while taking Helmeppo hostage and Koby stopping the marines from shooting the boat and endangering his new friend only for Helmeppo to escape and swear to arrest himself. Soon Garp saw potential in chore boys for their bravery, voicing that he'd take them to HQ and trained them himself.
At first, Koby was struggling to endure such a brutal regiment and noticed Helmeppo was reluctant to train with him until he came around. When Garp found them lazing, he offered them a chance to leave but Koby refused to do it. Koby also told Garp that he was willing to die to achieve his goal of being a Marine, mildly impressing Garp before ordering them back to work and they immediately complied. Despite them being subjected to grueling punishment and training, Garp succeeded in molding them into being stronger. Soon Garp became close to them to reveal his relation to Luffy.
It is also revealed that Koby did spare training to get stronger by venting pent up frustrations on battleships in the scrapyards, something Garp does in his free time. In spite of his repeated injuries, Koby persisted.
Jango's Dance Paradise
Koby and Helmeppo were fitter and continuing with training, while passing Jango and Fullbody.
Water 7 Saga
Post-Enies Lobby Arc
Garp's crew arrived at Water 7, where Koby and Helmeppo stood behind their superior. Koby fought Luffy and landed decent hits on him while Helmeppo fought Zoro but both were defeated, despite their good efforts. After Luffy and Zoro recognized Koby, they were impressed that he drastically changed. However, they recalled Helmeppo in a bored tone, annoying him while Koby comforted him.
Later on, Koby along with the Marines and Straw Hat Pirates were shocked to hear Revolutionary Dragon, the world's most infamous criminal was actually Luffy's father. A stunned Koby noted on how Luffy didn't know of his infamous father, while Helmeppo note on how that means Dragon was Vice Admiral Garp's son by this extension. Despite this, he and Helmeppo had a good conversation with Luffy over the training with his grandfather but how it was all worth it to make them strong and told Luffy of the New World, the second half of the Grand Line. He was then embarrassed when Luffy informed Helmeppo of how he ended up working for Alvida because of a minor mistake. Helmeppo laughed at Koby making such an error.
Much later, Koby was greatly impressed by the Straw Hat Pirates escaping to the skies with their new ship.
Summit War Saga
Marineford Arc
Koby was among the hundreds of thousands of Marines summoned to defend Marineford when Whitebeard, his crew, and their allies arrived to safe Portgas D. Ace from his public execution. He was notably shocked by Fleet Admiral Sengoku revealing Ace was the son of Roger, meaning he and Luffy have different fathers.
During the battle, Koby watched in horror when Admiral Akainu executed a Marine for wanting to run away out of concern for his family, thereby demonstrating Akainu's corrupt sense of "Absolute Justice" in which no mercy should be shown to anyone he believes could be associated with piracy and he will not tolerate cowardice or retreat from his own men. After Akainu kills Ace personally when Ace protected Luffy from a Magma Fist strike aimed intentionally at Luffy, Koby's own Haki awoke, causing him to hear all the Marines dying and pleading for mercy with being saved.
Later on, Koby was speechless when Blackbeard arrived with a strengthen crew and killed Whitebeard before he stole his devil fruit powers while proclaiming his era. A protesting Helmeppo tried to talk Koby on the situation of how the war was suppose to end but the latter is too lost.
Soon the continued fighting pushed him to his breaking point, at which he shouted for the fighting to stop, arguing as to why the Marines are still fighting when Ace and Whitebeard are now both dead and the Marines have already won. While many of his fellow Marines, including Fleet Admiral Sengoku and Vice Admiral Garp, see the truth to his words, Akainu does not, and prepares to execute Koby for apparent insubordination. Koby realized that not all present shared his views but he was happy he spoke up, bracing for his imminent death with no regrets only for the strike to be blocked by Shanks, saving Koby's life. As a shocked and exhausted Koby fell unconscious, Shanks voiced respect him for standing up to the marines to stop the battle since they had already achieved their goal.
Thanks to Koby, Shanks forces Akainu to stand down when he threatens to have his Red-Haired Pirates fight the Marines and Blackbeard's forces if they do not call a truce and ceasefire immediately, and Sengoku acquiesces to Shanks' ultimatum, ordering all his forces under his command as Fleet Admiral, including Akainu, to stand down and collect their dead and wounded.
Post War Arc
Koby recovered in the hospital and Helmeppo was by his side. The doctor told him that the voices he heard were a result of his Haki was awakening, explaining that Marines ranked Vice-Admirals were capable of using it. Koby was advised by the doctor to ask Garp for ways to master it.
Time-skip
Following this, Koby remained in the Marines, having mastered Haki and gotten stronger during the time skip, led their efforts during the Rocky Port incident. As a result of his bravery and rescue of civilians, he was promoted to the rank of Captain, allowing him to wear the cape-like coat that the higher-ranked Marine officers wore with the kanji for "Justice" emblazoned on the back. Koby even gained a reputation as Hero, mirroring his mentor. However, his involvement enabled Blackbeard to overthrow Ochokou and take control of Hachinosu.
Levely Arc
Koby was tasked with leading the escort from Dressrosa and Prudence Kingdoms. He had sensed an incoming pirate attack and dove into the ocean, where he proceeded to divert the torpedo's path while Helmeppo and the crew defeated the pirates. He spoke with the Riku family who complimented his strength, with Kyros remarking on his acts at the Rocky Port incident, something Koby shrugged off as not praiseworthy. Rebecca came out with news of Luffy's exploits, she quickly deduced Koby was connected to Luffy because of his excitement. She told Koby they could take privately on it, while he read the paper of Luffy's acts in Tottoland.
Wano Country Arc
He then joins the Marine's special forces called "SWORD". After the Shichibukai was abolished, Koby, his superior Vice-Admiral Yamakaji, and his troops sailed to Amazon Lily to try capture Boa Hancock. However, it failed as Koby and the Marines (including Vice-Admiral Yamakaji) as most of the marines, were turned into stone, leaving Koby to be defenseless and alone. Koby was then captured by the Blackbeard Pirates (who invaded Amazon Lily to kill Hancock and steal her devil fruit but it was prevented and they were drove off by Silvers Rayleigh and Shakuyaku). It was revealed Koby actually surrendered himself to Blackbeard in exchange to release 800 Marine hostages.
Egghead Arc
Koby remained in the custody of Blackbeard before his fellow SWORD members to help rescue him. However, one of them (Prince Grus) recalled that Hachinosu is Blackbeard's territory. Rescuing Koby is suicidal and not an option. Because they are powerless against Blackbeard, they'll immediately die if they would try invade at Hachinosu. This was until Garp shows up ordering Helmepoo and SWORD to get aboard on his ship to rescue Koby.
It revealed Blackbeard and his crew are interested of Cross Guild's Marine bounty hunting. Blackbeard revealed to Koby that he is just going to use him as a bargaining chip to make deals with the World Government of making Hachinosu into an official island known as the "Blackbeard Kingdom". Koby revealed to Blackbeard that the World Government and the Marines will never accepted the Emperor of turning Hachinosu as paradise for pirates. Aokiji revealed to Teach of SWORD to be a black ops Marines unit. Though his attempt would be in vain, but due Koby being one of the most valuable Marines to the Government, Blackbeard locked him up as he wanting to see what will the people that Koby swore to protect, reacts if he has been disavowed from the Marines. When Garp and the SWORD arrived, Later, he was sprung from Blackbeard's jail by Perona, who offered to free him in exchange for a promise that he would help release her old employer, Gecko Moria. Koby reluctantly agreed, and made his escape to reunite with his comrades and mentor. However, they were halted by Kuzan (Koby's former superior and Garp's former disciple). Koby successfully escaped Hachinosu after defeating Avalo Pizzaro but Garp allowed himself to be captured by Kuzan.
He was seen taken to and recovering from his injuries along with rest of the SWORD members in Marine GS Hospital.
Koby realized the truth behind the World Government during Vegapunk's speech. He intend to stop Luffy from becoming a Pirate King.
Heroic Acts
- Giving a speech of no more fighting, realizing the Marineford war has caused too much bloodshed even after the Marines are gaining the upper hand.
- Saving Rocky Port from Trafalgar D. Water Law, an incident that earned him his promotion to Captain.
- Trying to convince Blackbeard not to kill Boa Hancock until Silvers Rayleigh appears to force Blackbeard of sparing Hancock. He also offered himself to Teach in exchange for 800 marines to leave free.
- Escaping Blackbeard's crew and saving the people on Hachinosu, marines and civilians, from Avalo Pizarro's attack but sadly his mentor Garp gotten captured in hope to reform Kuzan.
Abilities and powers
Originally, Koby was weak and frail while reduced to a slave by Alvida and chore boy by the Marines. During his harsh training by Vice-Admiral Monkey D. Garp, Koby has gained superhuman strength and speed. However, his abilities are still too weak against Luffy (who has a bounty of 300,000,000 berries) when they fought at Water 7 and Marineford.
During the time-skip, his ability increased to the point that he was able to catch and lift a torpedo. Unfortunately, former Warlord Boa Hancock (who's bounty is worth 1,659,000,000 berries) and the Emperor Marshall D. Teach/Blackbeard (who's bounty is worth 3,996,000,000 berries). Interestingly, Koby was not turned to stone by Hancock's power, like several marines or pirates suggesting he has a pure heart. When motivated by Garp, Koby showed himself strong enough to defeat some of Yonko level commanders, which is seen when he defeats Avalo Pizzaro.
Besides his strength, Koby has gained a reputation as Koby the Hero, mirroring his mentor Garp. This was seen when he was recognized by Kyros for his potential and by Teach who even tried to use him as a bargaining chip with the World Government.
The Six Powers
Koby has mastered the supernatural martial arts discipline, the only warrior outside of CP0 who can use all six techniques, though not the Rukuogan technique.
Haki
Kenbunshoku Haki
During the Summit War of Marineford, Koby awakened Kenbunshoku Haki. Koby was shown hunched over and crying intensely on the battlefield, saying that the voices in his head were disappearing one by one as the combatants around him were slain, much like what Aisa felt during the Skypiea Arc.
After the timeskip, Koby had developed his Kenbunshoku Haki to a very advanced level. He was able to notice a torpedo headed towards the Dressrosa- Prodence Kingdom ship underwater from his own ship a ways off, shocking Helmeppo, who did not notice it despite having Kenbunshoku Haki as well. On top of that, Koby also managed to sense Kyros's great strength despite just meeting him.
Busoshoku Haki
Koby is a skilled Busoshoku Haki user.
At Hachinosu, an almost exhausted Koby hardened his fist to break apart Avalo Pizarro's gigantic hand, preparing to crush their escaping battleship, which carried civilians and comrades. Furthermore, he proved skilled and powerful in the advanced application of emitting Haki without a medium, resulting in him blasting apart the Ten Titanic Captains' Shima Shima no Mi. Such a feat of Busoshoku Haki sparked immediate astonishment from the Marines, SWORD members, and Blackbeard Pirates, some of which included Devil Fruit users and combatants who fought powerful opponents.
Trivia
- Koby's failed attempted to arrest Boa Hancock is similar of how Monkey D. Garp failed to arrest Shakuyaku.
- Koby is currently the only member of the Marines who is capable of using all six forms of Haki.
