Zeff (ゼフ, Zefu?) is a supporting character in the manga and anime series One Piece. He is the former leader of the Cook Pirates and the owner/head chef of the ocean-going restaurant Baratie. Serving as a mentor and father figure to Sanji.
He is voiced by Kōji Yada (Episode 20-320) and Ben Hiura (Episode 794+) in Japanese, Jamie Meldrum in the Odex dub, Robert O'Gorman in the 4kids dub, and the late Grant James untill 2019 and Garrett Schenck after this in the Funimation dub. In the live-action he is portrayed by Craig Fairbrass.
Biography
Zeff, who was formerly known as "Red-Leg," was the captain of the Cook Pirates and a former pirate that once struck terror into the hearts of those who saw him, Zeff was also an industrious man that was unwavering on his goal to find All Blue, which was the fabled sea that gathered every fish in the world together. His crew spent one year searching the Grand Line for All Blue but returned empty-handed. Still, Zeff never lost hope with regard to obtaining All Blue.
It was not until he attacked a cruise ship that he met a boy named Sanji who dreamed of finding the All Blue. During the raid, a large storm hit the Colossus and the cruise ship sank. Zeff saved Sanji in a moment of desperation by pulling him from the water, but they both ended up on a deserted island with very little food (nothing but two bags - one filled with food and another filled with treasure). While Sanji was getting used to being on the island, Zeff chose to use the food to sustain Sanji, and he secretly sustained himself by eating his own leg. After being stranded for seventy days without hope of rescue.
Though years have passed since Sanji first left Zeff, it remains etched in his mind that he cried for the loss of his mentor, and felt gratitude for all that he had done for him while being with him during those years. In the Final Saga of One Piece, Zeff is still looking down from his ship on the current events that are taking place around the planet, as Sanji learns that his bounty has not been raised, only declared by the World Government as "Only Alive." This was something that had been discussed between the two of them, and even after Sanji had finished writing this letter, Zeff would not know the actual reasons behind the World Government's decision to place an "Only Alive" status on Sanji. The reason for this status was actually the fact that the Big Mom Pirates attacked the Baratie, during which time Sanji would have laid down his own life to protect his mentor Zeff. Since the beginning of the "New World Era" it has always been Zeff's belief that it was his duty to help feed the hungry, and this has been demonstrated in many different ways throughout history, and zeff fed everyone, including the members of the Gally Pirates, who have also been part of "The Grand Fleet".
In The Final Saga, Zeff and his crew are always able to look down upon the current movements of history. They are able to do this through Vegapunk's international transmission of live events that were happening at the same time as he was doing so in his own life.
