Biography
Fire Emblem Gaiden / Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
Origins
Alm was born in the year 384 in the Valentian calendar and the year 590 in the Archanean calendar. His grandfather was a legendary warrior known as Mycen, who raised him in Ram Village. Alm never knew who his parents were, but he didn't care until the villagers started to spread strange rumors that Mycen never had any children. Alm was raised with Gray, Tobin, Kliff, Faye, and other children from Ram Village who had all received combat training from Mycen. Alm also grew up with Celica, a young girl Mycen cared for and to whom he was particularly attached, with the two even wearing similar brands on their left and right hands, respectively.
Tragically, their time together was cut short when Slayde, Desaix's enforcer, wandered into Ram Village for supplies and later became interested in Celica because of the unique mark on her hand. After driving him away, Mycen mysteriously takes Celica away to keep her safe, leaving Alm heartbroken. Alm promised Celica that they would see each other again one day.
Act I
Over the next few years, Alm worked on his fighting and war skills with Mycen's help. Now 17 years old and confident that he can leave the village, he tries to persuade Mycen, but his grandfather refuses because he is still too young to leave. Shortly after, Lukas arrives at Ram Village, seeking Mycen's assistance with the Deliverance, a Zofian resistance force dedicated to overthrowing Desaix. With Mycen missing from the village, Alm volunteers to join the Deliverance in his grandfather's place, accompanied by his childhood friends. Alm quickly establishes himself as a valuable member of the Deliverance, gaining the trust and confidence of Lukas and Clair, another member of the Deliverance who had been captured by Desaix's forces but was shown disdain by Fernand, yet another member of the Deliverance who had low views on commoners. After arriving at the Deliverance's hideout, Alm encounters Clive, Clair's brother and their leader. Clive believes that a commoner can rally the Deliverance more effectively than he can, so he places Alm in command of the Deliverance. Fernand becomes enraged by this and abandons them.
Now serving as the new leader of the Deliverance, he leads the march towards Zofia Castle to liberate it. Alm leads the siege of Zofia Castle after arriving; they defeat Desaix's army but are unable to kill him or Slayde, as both of them escape. Inside the castle, Alm decides to drive Rigel from Zofia. He also discovers that Mycen has no family before he reunites with the former, who expresses his pride in Alm's development while also warning him of the dangers he is about to face against Rigel. Alm then greets the Zofia residents who are celebrating their liberation.
By sheer happenstance, Celica meets Zofia Castle while traveling to the Temple of Mila, and the two get back together. As the two try to rekindle their relationship, Alm informs Celica that he intends to attack Rigel in order to prevent Emperor Rudolf's attempt at conquest. Celica asks Alm to think about a peaceful way to end the fight, saying that she doesn't think Emperor Rudolf is as bad as other people say he is. Alm dismisses this as irrelevant, claiming that his army has already invaded Zofia and is determined to launch an assault on Rigel in order to repel the invasion. Celica accuses him of vying for the throne when he mentions the late king's role in provoking the empire. Alm is offended by this and claims that all he wants is to protect Zofia and that if the missing Zofian princess took his place, he would return to Ram at any time to join her. Celica, frustrated that Alm refuses to negotiate, declares that there is no such thing as a lost princess and departs to prepare for the Temple of Mila. The two parted ways, and a sudden rockslide prevented them from meeting again for the time being.
Act II
Alm then begins his campaign to drive Rigel out of Zofia. During his campaign, he encounters Fernand, angering Clive and Clair, as he reveals his defection, as well as revealing the revelation that Mycen never had children, which deeply concerns Clive. Alm and his forces then encounters Berkut, who attacks his group for sport but is successfully driven away, establishing a bitter rivalry between the two.
Later on, Alm meets Luthier in a forest village en route to the border. Luthier tells Alm that Rigel has blocked the sluice in order to flood Zofia and asks for his assistance in saving his captured sister Delthea. Alm and Clive also learns that Clive's wife Mathilda was to be executed. When Alm and the Deliverance came to save Mathilda, Desaix, who had faked his death, decided to slowly kill her by having his archers shoot at her. Anticipating their arrival as well, he asks Riegel for assistance in eliminating them. Despite their best efforts, Desaix dies in the end and saves Mathilda. Before his death, he curses Mycen for giving the kingdom to Rudolf's "pup", which troubles Alm and Clive. Alm's group discovers the Royal Sword, a formidable weapon that is said to be exclusive to people descended from royalty, inside the fortress. When Tobin tries to pick it up, he discovers that it is too heavy. Alm, who effortlessly picks it up, believes Tobin was joking, but he vehemently denies it. This fact shocks Lukas and raises questions about its implications, but Alm dismisses it as an exaggeration of the myth. Lukas acknowledges the possibility but decides that Alm is the rightful wielder of the blade regardless.
When Alm and his army reach the sluice, they confront and kill Tatarrah, releasing Delthea from his mind control. He opens the sluice after the corresponding floodgate at the Temple of Mila is opened first, implying Celica is responsible, as well as her status as the missing princess.
Act III
Now in the country of Rigel, the Zofian attack starts, with Alm at the forefront, after Alm begs Rudolf for talks but receives no response. Berkut and Fernand confront the Deliverance immediately upon entering. Despite only two and a third cavalry units opposing Alm's collective army, the battle is almost evenly contested, with Alm barely defeating Berkut. Berkut shatters a mirror given to him by Nuibaba during his defeat, causing the Deliverance to be cursed. However, Celica's intervention breaks the curse and saves the army.
Before traveling to Rigel Castle, Alm learns of a witch on Fear Mountain who has been kidnapping Rigelian women to sacrifice for her god. Alm diverts the Deliverance to put an end to Nuibaba's schemes, who had also sought Alm out with the intention of sacrificing him to her god Medusa in exchange for eternal beauty and life. Alm's onslaught on her abode succeeds, with him killing the witch. Inside, Alm frees Tatiana, a Rigelian saint who wishes to join his army so that she can reunite with her beloved Zeke. Alm leads the Deliverance to Rigel Castle, where they eventually meet Zeke, who is working alongside Jerome. When Zeke sees Tatiana among Alm's forces, he immediately turns on Jerome and kills the corrupt knight and aids them in defeating the rest of Jerome's forces. Following the battle, Alm invites Zeke to join his army, and although grateful for rescuing his beloved, Zeke declines, remaining loyal to Emperor Rudolf for his kindness after suffering amnesia. Zeke, however, recognizes Alm's brand and instantly enlists in his army because Emperor Rudolf himself instructed him to follow a man with that brand on his hand, even if it meant engaging in combat with Rudolf. He explains that the mark would represent the end of Duma and Mila's influence on Valentia and that Alm would be one of the heroes who would lead this effort.
As the Deliverance approaches Rigel Castle, Celica appears before Alm via astral projection thanks to the Sage Halcyon, and the two make amends for their previous fight at Castle Zofia, with Celica revealing to Alm that she is the long-lost princess Anthiese. While the two must stay apart for a while longer, she promises to reunite once her journey is complete. As a parting gift, she requests that Halcyon unlock Alm's true potential, allowing him to become a true Hero once he is ready to use this blessing.
After a long, grueling war between Zofia and Riegel, the Deliverance finally makes it to the Final Bastion, where they encounter Slayde once again. Prior to the battle, Slayde personally greets the Deliverance and explains his rise to power in Rigel. An enraged Clive chastises him for being nothing more than an opportunistic coward, even selling out his homeland for power. Slayde, in a huff, orders his forces to attack the Deliverance. Ultimately, his forces are overpowered, and Slayde is killed, cursing Alm and the others one final time. Eventually, Alm and the Deliverance arrive at Rigel Castle, where Alm confronts Emperor Rudolf personally. Rudolf doesn't attack Alm when the two fight, much to Alm's confusion, and the emperor loses the fight, heavily wounded. During his final moments, Rudolf reveals that Alm is his only son, Albein Alm Rudolf. Shocked by the unexpected revelation, Alm begs Rudolf to elaborate, but the king silences him so he can make his last request. As he draws his last breath, he begs his son to accept his fate by seizing Falchion, which is kept in the Duma Temple, and using its power to put an end to the age of gods. As Alm realizes in horror that he just killed his father, he is left in disbelief and grief.
Following the death of the king and his appointment as heir apparent, Alm is fully recognized as the prince of Rigel and led into the castle. Mycen shows up inside the castle and reveals the truth about his past. Duma had begun to go insane, and Rudolf was one of the first to notice his decline. Coincidentally, his newborn son bore a Brand, which was prophesied to be a key figure in ending Valentia's gods' madness. To shape Alm into the true Hero of legend and keep him from being captured by the Duma faithful, Rudolf directed Mycen, his closest friend, to take Alm away and raise him to become the hero foretold. Alm's identity was kept a secret from everyone except Rudolf and Mycen. Before sending Alm away with Mycen, he told him that a newborn Zofian princess had also been born with a Brand. Rudolf would then spend the next 17 years carrying out his plan, becoming a conqueror in order to encourage Alm's development into a hero. With Rudolf's plan finally successful and Alm fully understanding his place in the world, he embraces his role as Valentia's hero and descends into the basement of Duma Tower to reclaim Falchion and slay Duma.
In the temple, Alm discovers Celica imprisoned by Jedah, who plans to sacrifice her to Duma. Despite Rudolf's dying words instructing Alm to slay Duma, Celica tries to persuade him otherwise, fearing that Rigel will become even more barren than it already is and believing that nothing can slay Duma because Falchion has been sealed by Mila herself. Celica flees to accept her death at the hands of Duma after confessing to Alm that her only desire in life is not to see Alm or anyone else hurt or killed and telling him that she wishes things had turned out differently and that she could have returned with Alm and lived with him at Ram Village. Despite this, Alm decides to continue his quest to defeat Duma and save Celica, as he does not want to lose anyone else. As Alm travels deeper into the Temple, he encounters Berkut, who has been driven insane by his successive defeats and the revelation of Alm as heir apparent. Alm fights his cousin, eventually defeating him. In his final moments, a remorseful Berkut places his faith in Alm to bring the age of gods to an end, but Alm also regrets killing yet another family member he has only recently discovered.
After reaching the Temple's deepest catacombs, Alm is forced to face the final chambers alone in order to claim Falchion. Celica greets Alm in the final chamber, but she is shocked to discover that Duma has taken her soul and transformed her into a mindless witch. As the two fight, Celica telepathically begs Alm to kill her before her controlled body kills him. Alm hesitates, prompting Celica to disarm him of the Royal Sword. Mila orders Alm to take Falchion and drives the blade into Celica, removing Duma's influence over her but also killing her in the process. As Alm mourns Celica's death, Mila uses her remaining power in Falchion to bring her back. Before she fades away, Mila's spirit tells Alm to use Falchion to stop Duma and free him from his pain. Celica apologizes to Alm for how her selfishness, with Alm forgiving her. Following their reconciliation, the two use their respective Mila's Turnwheels to open the gate to Duma's domain. Both Alm and Celica's armies band together to kill Jedah and his daughters Hestia and Marla, allowing them to finally confront Duma. Alm, with Celica's help, is able to drive Falchion into Duma's head, killing the Divine Dragon and bringing an end to their age-long feud over Valentia.
Legacy
With the gods' influence over the land gone, Zofia and Rigel form the One Kingdom of Valentia, with Alm ascending to the throne and becoming its first king. Together with Celica, who they are now married to, they usher in a time of peace. Throughout Valentia's history, Alm—later known as the Saint-King Alm I—became well-known for founding the vast empire and using his might to destroy the tyrannical gods that had ruled the region. Alm's legacy would last even after the schism of the unified kingdom a thousand years later, when one of his successors renamed both the Kingdom and the continent as a whole Valm in his honour. Though his descendant, Walhart, would not rule benevolently like his ancestor.
